At 16, he played solo violin with the Philadelphia Orchestra. He studied at the Curtis Institute of Music, the Philadelphia Musical Academy, and Pierre Monteux's conducting school. He was associate concertmaster of the Cleveland Orchestra in the late 1950s under George Szell. Then he became concertmaster with the Philadelphia Orchestra under Eugene Ormandy.
