It’s been nearly three full years since American Rust last graced screens, but as the latest season titled American Rust: Broken Justice heads to Prime Video, the story is picking up only four months after the events of Season 1. For Buell resident Grace Poe (Maura Tierney), this means the beginning of a new chapter with her boyfriend, Del Harris (Jeff Daniels), and her son, Billy (Alex Neustaedter), who is still recovering from injuries sustained after being wrongfully convicted for Season 1’s central murder. After spending most of Season 1 fighting for her boy’s innocence and trying to free him from prison, her goals are shifting a bit this time around. “It’s a very different journey because the two men in her life have sort of… I don’t want to say abandoned her, but I think that’s how the character feels,” Tierney tells TV Insider of Grace...

Jeff Daniels as eternally glum police chief Del Harris returns for a widening murder conspiracy in the second-season trailer for American Rust: Broken Justice, which dropped Monday.
After the sudden, mysterious death of a former police officer in Pennsylvania’s rust belt in the rookie season is not quite solved by Harris, to say the least, the second-season trailer for American Rust: Broken Justice returns to the fictional town of Buell, where a compromised Del and Grace Poe (Maura Tierney) try to rebuild their lives.
That’s until the trailer reveals a series of unrelated murders that may add up to a much larger conspiracy closing in on a tight-knit town. “We never really do move on, do we?” Del questions at one point.
The fateful wrench from the first-season finale cover-up surfaces, as does Del fretting over how to protect the murder suspect and son of his sometimes girlfriend Grace.

Showtime has opted not to renew American Rust for a second season, bringing Jeff Daniels’ short time as Chief of Police Del Harris to an end.
“We can confirm that American Rust will not be moving forward with a second season,” Showtime said in a statement. “We would like to thank our partners at Boat Rocker, our talented showrunner Dan Futterman and the rest of the wonderful writers, and our amazing cast led by Jeff Daniels and Maura Tierney.”
Cancellations/Renewals Scorecard: TV Shows Ended Or Continuing In 2021-22 Season
Based on Philipp Meyer’s debut novel American Rust, the family drama sought to explore the tattered American dream through the eyes of complicated and compromised Police Chief Del Harris (Daniels) in a small Rust Belt town in southwest Pennsylvania. When the woman he loves sees her son accused of murder, Harris is forced to decide what he’s willing to do to protect him.

Billy Poe (Alex Neustaedter ) is awaiting his trial in prison, for a murder he didn’t commit on American Rust. As you can imagine, his parents, Grace (Maura Tierney) and Virgil (Mark Pellegrino), aren’t exactly going to see eye-to-eye about what to do next. But is it a good thing that the chief of police, Del Harris (Jeff Daniels), wants to help because of how he feels about Grace? Or might that just end up making things more complicated? Pellegrino teases what’s ahead. Billy was denied bail, and now he’s in a pretty tough spot. How will Virgil and Grace be handling that? Mark Pellegrino: Grace and Virgil have a bit of a parting of ways in the way that they look at the problem and the way of solving the problem. Grace is going to start turning to other resources to save Billy. It seems like...

Alex Neustaedter is playing Billy Poe on American Rust, a young man who cares too much about others to his detriment.
We had a chance to talk with Alex about his role and joining the stellar cast, including Jeff Daniels and Maura Tierney.
If you haven't watched American Rust Season 1 Episode 3 yet, there are some light spoilers. You've been warned!
Since you're the actor bringing him to life, can you give me your perspective on Billy Poe?
So Billy's a former high school football star, and he got offered to play college ball, and he declined that. He turned it down because of how important family is for him.
And I think that's very evident with these small towns outside of Pittsburgh, it's very family-oriented, and everybody knows each other. And he's good-natured at heart. And I think he's very comfortable where he is.
He doesn't want to press his boundaries too far.

Near the end of the first episode of “American Rust” — Dan Futterman’s limited series adaptation of Philipp Meyer’s 2009 novel of the same name — Jeff Daniels’ local sheriff tries to explain why he’s gone to bat for a young man accused of assault. You see, Del Harris (an exquisite name for the lead in a modern-day western) is a veteran of the Gulf War, and during the last month of active combat, he was on guard duty when he spotted a man walking too close to the base’s fence. That man was carrying a satchel, which Del feared was a bomb or some other danger to the station he was tasked to protect, so the scared teenage soldier opened fire.
“Next morning, patrol goes out to take a look and there’s hardly anything left — just blood and shredded clothing,” he says. “And no satchel. Did someone come and take it?...

There is presumably a point buried amid the infinite frowns and vaguely tortured souls abound in “American Rust,” but like each character’s motivation, it’s undetectable. Showrunner Dan Futterman seems to be marginally curious about the Pennsylvania Rust Belt setting seen in the new Showtime drama, but not enough to build a compelling narrative about it.
Based upon Philipp Meyer’s novel of the same name, “American Rust” can best be described simply as a mood. Not in the same sense of, say, a series that provokes a particular disposition from its audience. Rather, it shows one actual mood throughout the first three episodes made available to press — and relies only on that to keep them invested. But it doesn’t.

Ok. It's time to admit that I am not a critic's critic. I'm a people's critic.
I just want to be entertained, you know? I find so many things enjoyable that are panned by critics. What else can it mean?
When the first episodes of Succession dropped, I loved it. I was enamored. But so many critics panned it that I didn't post an early review because I thought I was so far off the mark. Needless to say, that experience was much different once more episodes were dropped.
Right now, American Rust isn't looking too rosy if you're tracking it on Rotten Tomatoes.
Well, allow me to inch that score up just a fraction because the first three episodes were very good.
I think some of the problems come from a disconnect between city dwellers and the rest of us. Although I live in Pittsburgh and spent decades in Denver,...

Maura Tierney is known for a slew of great television dramas that run the gamut from medical (“ER”) to complicated marriages (“The Affair”). But her two most recent series took on the timely topic of justice, and more specifically how far one might go to save a loved one from having to pay for his (alleged) crimes.
On Showtime’s “Your Honor,” Tierney stepped in as prosecutor Fiona McKee in the back-half of the first season, working in the same courthouse as the central character who covered up his son’s fatal hit-and-run. Now, though, she stars on the same premium cabler’s adaptation of “American Rust” as Grace Poe, the mother of a young man who is assumed to have killed someone. “American Rust” is set on the opposite end of Pennsylvania from Easttown, where Mare solved crimes earlier this year. On that great HBO series, the town seemed to pulse with life and emotion — look past the chewy accents and Wawa sandwiches, and a sense of Easttown emerged through the slump of characters’ shoulders, the way they engaged with one another. On “American Rust,” though, the title’s rather direct nod to its Rust Belt setting gives the first clue that subtlety is not the order of the day. The plot thrives on contrivance and misunderstanding more often than human emotion, and attempts to draw out what it’s like for characters to live where they do more often seem to end in showy small-town cliché.

Jeff Daniels, star of Showtime’s upcoming drama American Rust, said his career in television would not have been as prolific if it weren’t for his late God of Carnage co-star James Gandolfini and HBO’s The Sopranos.
“Jim Gandolfini made it happen,” the Emmy-winning actor said about his transition from stage and film to TV. “The Sopranos changed television, as did HBO, Showtime, Netflix, Amazon, Hulu. All of a sudden you have all these other places to go.”
During Showtime’s TCA slot, where Daniels joined fellow American Rust co-stars and the creative team behind the drama, the actor said that premium networks and streamers allowed for more crossover between the mediums – also citing co-star Bill Camp who recently appeared in Netflix’s The Queen’s Gambit.

With Spring in full bloom through most of the country, many cooped-up urbanites are longing for a sweet getaway, perhaps at a quaint old cottage. Even a century-old farmhouse would do for a nice rest. Ah, but what if someone was already there and refusing to rest. Or stay in the “underworld”? Oh yes, it’s haunted house time at the movies (or at least the number one movie streaming service). No, it’s not another mission for those 1970s paranormal “PIs”, the Warrens, though they’ll be back soon in another entry in the ever-expanding Conjuring series. No, this time it’s pure fiction, and it springs ahead into the start of the next decade. Otherwise, it’s a new take on yet another attractive young family as they begin to unravel due to those unexplained, late at night (usually) Things Heard & Seen.

It’s safe to assume any movie that opens with a quote from 17th century pluralistic-Christian theologian (and big time spiritualist) Emanuel Swedenborg has a lot on its mind, and so it’s no surprise that Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini’s “Things Heard & Seen” isn’t the straightforward horror story that’s suggested by its ominous flash-forward of an opening scene. Indeed, Swedenborg’s insistence that “things that are in heaven are more real than things that are in the world” hovers over the first hour of this strange movie like a gentle hand on your shoulder, as if to say “don’t be afraid of this haunted old house in the Hudson Valley. Just because it comes with a ghost or two and a smattering of half-hearted jump-scares doesn’t mean that it’s evil. Amanda Seyfried could’ve had that freaky nightmare about pulling a...

A Manhattan couple moves to a historic hamlet up in the Hudson Valley and come to discover that their marriage has a sinister darkness, one that rivals their new home's history. Oooh. Based on the acclaimed novel by Elizabeth Brundage. Amanda Seyfried and James Norton co-star, with Natalia Dyer, Alex Neustaedter, Rhea Seehorn, Michael O'Keefe, Karen Allen, Jack Gore, with F. Murray Abraham, James Urbaniak, and Ana Sophia Heger. At first glance, this looks like an American remake of Rebecca, about digging up skeletons in the closet once you marry and move. 16 year old Josie (Olivia DeJonge) and her older brother Jack (Alex Neustaedter) lost their mother when they were young, and have since been raised, entirely isolated and homeschooled, by their abusive, alcoholic father (William Fichtner). One day Jack runs away, but a few weeks later he returns for his sister.
Josie and Jack bears all the hallmarks of a debut. Kelly Braffet and Sarah Lancaster’s screenplay, taken from Braffet’s novel, is a blunt instrument. One of the biggest issues is that we don’t see much evolution in any of the characters, and what we do get is screenwriting 101. Josie and Jack’s father is a drunk, over and over again we see him completely soused, berating his kids and telling them how useless they are. William Fichtner isn’t bad, making the slightly less obvious choice to generally play these scenes quietly, but they all blend into each other.

The female characters are badly underserved in this story of an off-the-rails brother and sister that gravitates around the monstrous men
“Your dad kept you locked up in an old house,” a character drunkenly blurts out in this adaptation of Kelly Braffet’s gothic novel about childhood misery and brother-and-sister incest. “It’s soooo Flowers in the Attic.” If only! The most shocking thing about this movie is how stale and lifeless it is, as if entire scenes had been placed into a vacuum storage bag, zipped up, and sucked of all energy and human feeling.
Set in the 1990s, it begins in rural Pennsylvania where 16-year-old Josie (Olivia DeJonge) and her older brother Jack (Alex Neustaedter) have been raised in a spooky old house by their physics professor father (William Fichtner). He’s a violent pompous drunk who homeschools the kids rather than sending them to “the idiot factory” local high school.
