- Jerzy Semkow was born on October 12, 1928 in Radomsko, Lódzkie, Poland. He died on December 23, 2014 in near Lausanne, Switzerland.
- He studied with Erich Kleiber, Bruno Walter, and Tulio Serafin. He held positions with the Leningrad Philharmonic, State Opera, and the Bolshoi Theater. In 1959, he became artistic director and conductor of the National Opera of Warsaw. From 1966 to 1976, he was principal conductor of the Royal Danish Opera and the Royal Danish Orchestra in Copenhagen.
- He was a Polish-born conductor who first led the Detroit Symphony Orchestra in 1971. He was guest conductor of the DSO every season between 1986 and 2009.
