There's a particular challenge that original anime face in that, unlike manga adaptations, they don't have a built-in audience and fanbase. Therefore, sometimes it can take a while for them to gain some momentum in the anime community. When “A Place Further than the Universe” first aired in 2018 there were many who dismissed it as another “cute girls doing cute things” show that had little to offer beyond mildly humorous antics. Those who gave the show a proper chance, however, found a deeply affecting coming of age comedy-drama from a creative team at the top of their game with plenty of emotional catharsis and heart-warming growth.

The psychological mystery novel series Monogatari by Nisio Isin is one of the most peculiar and special titles in the world of anime and manga, as many fans know. With 29 volumes as of the time of writing, the series is still ongoing and it has one of the most complex narrative structures in the world of animanga, but if you dig into the story, it is definitely worth it. The series has received numerous anime adaptations as well, although these adaptations don’t follow the order of the books. At this moment, the Monogatari Off and Monster Season series is the next one to air, and ahead of this year’s premiere, the series has released some new teasers for us.
In case you’re not fully familiar with the whole series, here is a brief official synopsis of what you can expect:

This season’s silent shonen hit, Chained Soldier, ended its first season on March 21, 2024, after 12 episodes. The series never became a major title, but it has a solid fanbase, and with the manga still being published, it was logical that it would get a renewal. And finally, today, we have confirmation that Chained Soldier will, indeed, return for a second season, but probably not before 2025. As of the time of writing, the manga currently has 19 volumes, having been published since 2019, so there is enough content for a second season without the series having to face significant delays.
If you’re not familiar with the title, the Chained Soldier anime series is a fantasy adventure shonen series with ecchi elements. It follows Yuuki Waruka as he tries to become the hero in a world where only women are granted superpowers to fight demonic entities. The official synopsis sums it up like this:

Considering how much of a hit the live-action One Piece series was for Netflix, the streamer appears to have gone all-in with the works of creator Eiichiro Oda. Alongside having the rights to show the anime series’ latest arc with weekly releases, an animated adaptation was revealed for an earlier short story entitled Monsters. Whilst it is understandable that the title was changed to make this short film stand out, it is curious how the new title, Monsters: 103 Mercies Dragon Damnation, is considerably lengthier?!.
The twenty-six-minute short begins with Ryuma (Yoshimasa Hosoya), a swordsman who just wants food but is unable to pay. His path leads to young waitress Flare (Kana Hanazawa), who has rebuilt her life after her hometown was destroyed by a dragon.

Voices That Bring Anime to Life: Celebrating the Best Anime Voice Actors of All Time ( Photo Credit – IMDb )
Japan takes its anime voice actors very seriously to the point where they have special voice acting academies and schools to train them to master their art completely. This is exactly why these professionals are so versatile and have such natural, golden voices. In fact, a large number of avid anime fans prefer watching anime subs rather than anime dubs exactly because of this. Some Dub actors tend to exaggerate and overact as a way to compensate for the inconsistency in translations and syncing. Native voice actors retain the ‘authenticity’ that dubs lack.
The authenticity of the subs is attributed to the voice actors’ talent and how natural they are with their jobs. Here are some of the best Japanese anime voice actors of all time.

Scott Pilgrim is back, but not in the way anyone expected. And who better to do it than the author responsible for creating “Scott Pilgrim” in the first place?
The anime “Scott Pilgrim Takes Off” is created by Bryan Lee O’Malley and BenDavid Grabinski, and while it begins similarly to “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World,” a shocking twist at the end of Episode 1 soon takes this story in a different direction.

Japanese studio Production Ig’s conspiracy noir is a fabulous-looking tale influenced by Blade Runner
With the iconic 1995 Ghost in the Shell in their locker, Japan’s Production Ig studio has been a long way ahead of the curve on the now-inescapable AI and cybernetics front. This high-minded, operatic conspiracy-thriller anime, released for the Psycho-Pass franchise’s 10th anniversary, won’t do their reputation any harm. Often insightful about the dark impulses behind humankind’s need to delegate and cede to technology, it does a better job than most concept-drunk anime of parsing these philosophical musings into something semi-intelligible.

The box office has struggled to get back to its former glory in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, with theatrical windows shortened and both studios and audiences pivoting to streaming movies rather than seeing them on the big screen. The sappy and satisfying teen rom-dram “The Quintessential Quintupluets Movie” stands out among this year’s bumper crop of movies based on popular Japanese anime series. Much like other recent anime crossover hits, like “Jujutsu Kaisen 0” and “One Piece Film: Red,” “The Quintessential Quintuplets Movie” primarily addresses its franchise’s established audience.
You either already know who’s who and what’s already happened prior to this movie’s events, or you’re likely to get pretty lost.
That kind of insular appeal might seem like a handicap for uninitiated viewers, but several anime franchise spinoffs have already dominated the Japanese box office and enjoyed weeks-long, nationwide releases in American chain theaters and multiplexes. “The Quintessential Quintuplets Movie” also has all of the melodramatic revelations and puppy-love intrigue of the preceding anime series, based on Negi Haruba’s manga comics.

It’s hard to know if the Japanese animated fantasy “Jujutsu Kaisen 0” might be a good entry point for anybody who hasn’t already either watched the recent anime series or read its battle shonen manga comic-book source material.
This new feature-length prequel doesn’t deliver much more than what the anime series already has: a satisfying, faithful, and hormonal action-drama about teenage “jujutsu” martial-artist sorcerers/exorcists and their ongoing quest to destroy monstrous sentient curses and cursed objects.
Set about a year before the events depicted in both the anime and the manga, “Jujutsu Kaisen 0” presents a self-contained story about Yuta Okkotsu (voiced by Megumi Ogata in the Japanese-language version), a young jujutsu sorcerer who’s haunted by the cursed spirit of his childhood sweetheart Rika (Kana Hanazawa), who died in a hit-and-run accident shortly after exchanging engagement rings and lovers’ vows with Yuta.

Directors: Hiroyuki Seshita, Kôbun Shizuno/ Writers: Ishirô Honda, Yusuke Kozaki and Gen Urobuchi. Cast: Lucien Dodge, Kana Hanazawa, Ken'yû Horiuchi, Yûki Kaji and Mamoru Miyano. Fans of Toho's Godzilla franchise are better off watching Planet of the Monsters (2017) and City on the Edge of Battle together, rather than apart. But, the tease for what's next is worse than waiting for Marvel's Avengers: Infinity War Part 2! With this film, a huge battle royale is coming. "You can't trust people you meet at night." GKids has released an official Us trailer for a wacky, super fun Japanese anime titled The Night is Short, Walk On Girl, which premiered at film festivals last year and is getting a Us release this August. The film is the latest from Japanese filmmaker Masaaki Yuasa, who also made the musical Lu Over the Wall opening this year as well. The Night is Short, Walk On Girl is set over the course of one weird, "insanely long" night in Kyoto, following a teen girl only known as "The Girl with Black Hair" (or "Otome") as she experiences the nightlife. She's also pursued by a boy named Senpai, who comes up with awkward ways to bump into her. The Japanese voice cast features Gen Hoshino, Kana Hanazawa, Hiroshi Kamiya, Ryuji Akiyama, Kazuya Nakai, Yuko Kaida, and Hiroyuki Yoshino. I'm not the biggest fan of this animation style,...

Shy Norimichi (Masaki Suda) can’t stop himself from starring at Nazuna (Suzu Hirose) while his more confident best friend Yûsuke (Mamoru Miyano) admits to wanting to declare his love for her. The boys seek to deflect their obvious infatuations, falling over each other in embarrassment so that the other can win his prize regardless of how the object of their affection feels about either. So when the trio find themselves in the midst of a swimming race, fate decides for them. Norimichi hurts his foot, Yûsuke keeps his stride, and Nazuna’s victor impulsively asks the latter on a date simply because he surfaced first.

This weird and sometimes wonderful Japanese anime is about a student on a kaleidoscopic all-night quest to find a treasured children’s book
Here is a weird, very bemusing and sometimes wonderful anime from Japan: a kind of miniaturist epic or odyssey from animator and director Masaaki Yuasa, adapted from a campus novel by Tomihiko Morimi – and evidently an extension or development of ideas from his earlier book The Tatami Galaxy. It is romantic and hallucinogenic, with an edge of softcore erotic sleaze.
A female student with dark hair (voiced by Kana Hanazawa) goes down the rabbit hole for an all-night dreamlike adventure of drinking and partying. She is on a quest to discover a children’s book she once loved. She is also being pursued by an older student, Senpai (Gen Hoshino), who is in love with her, or at any rate sexually obsessed with her, and not only...
