Netflix is becoming the new kid in school everyone bullies. As the video rental company keeps expanding and developing into a potential entertainment juggernaut, other companies seem to treat them worse and worse. For example, a few months ago Netflix beat out a bunch of other suitors to acquire original content like Kevin Spacey and David Fincher's House of Cards [1] as well as a fourth season of Arrested Development [2]. So what does a bully do? Refuse to sell them DVD's, that's what. It happened last week [3] with HBO and now HBO's sister company, Warner Bros., has doubled the window before Netflix can rent their new releases. The big question following this expected announcement is whether Redbox and Blockbuster will tell Warner Bros to take a hike and buy the studio’s new discs from retailers. That’s one reason why other studios have been reluctant to push for the longer window. But Warner Bros made the announcement at the 2012 International CES because it’s eager to push low-cost rental services aside in the hope that the entertainment industry’s new UltraViolet initiative will boost sales of DVDs and Blu-ray discs. Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group and Netflix, Inc. today announced a new agreement that will extend the current 28-day sales-only window to 56 days for Theatrical New Release and made-for-video titles on DVD and Blu-ray Disc. Warner Home Video has teamed with Paramount and DreamWorks Animation to distribute DVDs in China as part of the continuing war on piracy there.
WHV said Wednesday from Beijing that it will leverage its distribution infrastructure and expertise to provide high-quality, studio-authorized copies of top-selling films on DVD.
DreamWorks/Paramount's "Transformers" and DWA's "Shrek the Third" will be the first titles distributed under the partnerships.
"The addition of two major Hollywood studios' product in China -- Paramount and DreamWorks Animation -- further strengthens our efforts in building a legitimate video business in China," said Mark Horak, executive vp and GM of worldwide operations and new packaged media at WHV. "By providing a wide selection of high-quality, competitively priced DVDs, we will be offering consumers a more attractive alternative to lower-quality, pirated product."
CAV Warner Home Entertainment, a joint entertainment distribution venture between WHV and China Audio Video, will use its established relationships with retailers throughout China to distribute select Paramount and DWA titles in more than 50 cities and up to 20,000 outlets.
