Producers Tristan Goligher (Supernova) and Mike Goodridge (Triangle of Sadness) highlighted the importance of working across platforms and developing projects over an extended period during an industry keynote at the London Film Festival Tuesday.
The pair headed the keynote as part of the festival’s second day of industry events, and they were joined on stage by Pretty Red Dress writer-director Dionne Edwards and Mia Bays, Director of BFI National Lottery Film Fund who moderated the panel.
Discussing the process of bringing their projects to the big screen, the trio quickly landed on the topic of development. Goodridge, who heads the UK-based production company Good Chaos and is a co-producer on this year’s Palme d’Or winner Triangle of Sadness, said development is the key to producing a successful feature film.

Whether onstage or onscreen, Ruth Wilson has never shied from intimate and demanding scenes, and she’s got plenty in her new film, True Things.
Based on the book by Deborah Kay Davies, it casts Wilson as Kate, a benefits worker who can’t resist a torrid affair with an ex-con known only as “Blond,” played by Tom Burke. Wilson says the pair and filmmaker Harry Wootliff loved working with “the queen of intimacy coaching,” Ita O’Brien.
“She was brilliant,” recalls Wilson, who reportedly left The Affair over issues with the way nude scenes on Showtime series were handled, among other concerns. “I’m really hoping it results in more interesting sex scenes on our screens because there’s a dialogue now and there wasn’t one before. Having an intimacy coach now means the discussion can happen in a pragmatic, practical, rational way.

Samuel Goldwyn Films has acquired North American rights to “True Things,” Harry Wootliff‘s critically acclaimed sophomore film headlined by “The Affair” star Ruth Wilson and Tom Burke.
The psychological drama world premiered at this year’s Venice and went on to play at Toronto and London film festivals. It marks Wootliff’s follow-up to her BAFTA-nominated and BIFA-winning romantic drama “Only You,” which starred Laia Costa and Josh O’Connor.
“True Things” is an adaptation of Deborah Kay Davies’ book “True Things About Me,” based on a script by Wootliff and Molly Davies.
Wilson stars as Kate, a woman who is sleep-walking through life when a chance sexual encounter with a charismatic stranger awakens her. High on infatuation, what follows is an intoxicating car crash.

“True Things,” which world premieres Saturday in Venice’s Horizons section, is the fruit of a collaboration between the production companies of two stars, Jude Law and Ruth Wilson, the first feature film that she has produced, as well as The Bureau, a production company with a stellar track-record for delivering arthouse hits.
When literary agent Cathryn Summerhayes sent Deborah Kay Davies’ novel “True Things About Me” to Ben Jackson, who runs Law’s production company, Riff Raff U.K., he found the story “gripping, interesting and weirdly relatable,” as well as “very modern and timely.”
The story follows a thirtysomething, fed-up singleton with a dreary job in a dead-end town. When a charismatic stranger crosses her path she dives into an intoxicating yet toxic relationship, which puts her at odds with family, friends and bosses, and pushes her to the edge.

Harry Wootliff, one of Britain’s rising women filmmakers, is in Venice for the world premiere, in the Horizons section, of her second feature, “True Things,” starring Ruth Wilson and Tom Burke. The film also plays at Toronto. Variety spoke to the writer-director, and the producers, Wilson, Jude Law, Tristan Goligher and Ben Jackson.
The film, based on Deborah Kay Davies’ novel “True Things About Me,” was initially developed by Jackson and Law’s production company Riff Raff U.K. and Wilson’s Lady Lazarus. When they brought on board The Bureau’s Tristan Goligher, he recommended Wootliff, with whom he was working on relationship drama “Only You.” That film went on to earn her a BAFTA nomination for outstanding debut, and the British Independent Film Award for debut director.
“True Things” follows Kate, a single woman in her early thirties, working in a dead-end office job in an English coastal town.

In the first trailer for “Supernova,” Stanley Tucci and Colin Firth play a married couple of 20 years who are taking what might be their last vacation together before Tucci’s mind slowly begins to drift away due to young-onset dementia.
That story sets the basis for the romance and drama in “Supernova,” which is written and directed by Harry Macqueen (“Hinterland”) and comes from the producers of “45 Years” and “I Am Not a Witch.”
“I want to be remembered for who I was, and not for who I’m about to become,” Tucci’s character says in the trailer. “I want to see this through with you to the end,” Firth’s character adds.
“Supernova” shows how on this vacation as they put jobs and plans on hold and try to preserve the time they have left, their individual ideas for their future begin to collide. Secrets are uncovered,...

Harry Macqueen’s Supernova, which makes its world premiere bow at the San Sebastián Film Festival next week, is a film founded in contrasts. A simple, intimate love story that follows a middle-aged gay couple, Sam and Tusker, on a road trip through England’s Lake District as they get to grips with Tusker’s diagnosis with young-onset dementia, its title nevertheless hints at the huge existential war the two are waging to preserve their love as illness threatens to tear them apart. Its two central performances from stars Colin Firth and Stanley Tucci eschew declarative moments of grandstanding dialogue in favor of quieter moments of painful reflection, and yet it still promises to ensconce both performers firmly into this year’s awards conversation for the power of its emotional gut punch.

After debuting on the fall festival circuit at Venice, Telluride and Toronto, A24 held Andrew Haigh’s finely wrought drama Lean on Pete for the less-crowded period of April, even though there is no question it is as awards-worthy as many of those films that did find a release in 2018. As I say in my video review (click the link above to watch), I didn’t warm to this story simply because my name is in the title, though that helped make it a must-see when I caught up with it in Telluride. Actually, I greatly admired the authentic nature of Haigh’s previous films Weekend and especially the marital drama 45 Years, which earned Charlotte Rampling a Best Actress Oscar nomination. Haigh’s films are about people, human stories that are subtly told, heartfelt without dwelling in sentimentality, and movies that take their time to unfold and sneak up on you.

Andrew Haigh’s quiet, two-person relationship tale won a lot of friends last year. A revelation from the past changes everything in the marriage of Charlotte Rampling and Tom Courtenay. We read the faces, read the gestures — just like we do in our own close relationships.

Most filmmakers must find a way to chop down 800-page novels and still retain some semblance of the original. Others have the opposite problem, fleshing a short story to fill a feature length movie. The classic example is Ernest Hemingway’s The Killers, which is less than three thousand words in length.

Like the film up for discussion itself, I’m going to keep this review of 45 Years very concise and heartfelt, though I’m sure with results not quite as finely wrought nor impeccably composed as director Andrew Haigh and his leading actors Charlotte Rampling and Tom Courtenay were able to achieve. Much like Criterion’s release last year of Phoenix, another intimately scaled contemporary drama presented for the appreciation of perceptive adults, 45 Years is a profoundly direct and emotionally evocative portrayal of complex relational dynamics that shift suddenly and with devastating consequence when long dormant secrets unexpectedly erupt from the past. This story, of a respectable married couple preparing for a very public celebration of their forty-fifth wedding anniversary, is effectively rooted in its Norfolk, England context, but with a universal applicability that committed partners from all walks of life can readily connect with their own personal stories.
