Bill Nye the Science Guy is about to educate and inform a lot more people the fun way again. Netflix is giving him a brand new talk show series set for Spring 2017. Bill Nye the Science Guy was a half-hour science program that aired on PBS and other networks from 1993-1998. It was a successor to things like Watch Mr. Wizard, Mr. Wizard's World, and Beakman's World. The show was great for a lot of reasons, the most important of course being that it got people engaged with learning science. The second, for me at least, was that it was hosted by a "geek" who was "cool." That might sound funny but as a kid who hid her geekiness, it was nice to see someone not just getting attention for theirs but paid for it. IndieWire reported this morning that the new series with Nye will be a talk show...

Bill Nye is making a return to TV, via a brand new series for Netflix. The erstwhile bow-tied host, known best to a generation as “The Science Guy,” will star in the streaming service’s “Bill Nye Saves the World,” a new talk show set to launch in Spring 2017.
The official synopsis, from Netflix: “Each episode will tackle a topic from a scientific point of view, dispelling myths, and refuting anti-scientific claims that may be espoused by politicians, religious leaders or titans of industry.”

In November, PBS Digital Studios announced a deal with Vlogbrothers duo Hank and John Green for a pair of new entries to the Crash Course library. One of those series has now arrived, with blogger Phil Plait bringing his astronomy know-how to the Green brothers' educational hub.
As with other Crash Course videos, the first episode of the astronomy course combines Plait's narration with colorful animations that appeal to the YouTube audience. Plait, who runs the "Bad Astronomy" blog for Slate, begins the episode with a quick overview of his subject. "Over the course of this series," he states, "we'll explore planets, stars, black holes, galaxies, subatomic particles, and even the eventual fate of the universe itself."
Plait's astronomy lessons can be found on the Crash Course channel, which has more than 2.6 million subscribers. At the same time, the Pbsds deal will also bring the videos to educators. The digital...

There are about as many things you can criticize in Christopher Nolan's Interstellar as there are minutes in the science fiction epic, and with that comes an interesting spectrum of opinions ranging from intense adoration to flat-out disdain. Perhaps one of the stranger criticisms I've come across, however, is in regards to the science used in the film, more specifically that some of it is, well, fiction. In response to these criticisms, Nolan told the following to The Daily Beast: "Theoretical physicist and executive producer Kip Thorne has a book on the science of the film about what's real, and what's speculation -- because much of it is, of course, speculation. There have been a bunch of knee-jerk tweets by people who've only seen the film once, but to really take on the science of the film, you're going to need to sit down with the film for a...

Hollywood — You might not have heard the name Nicole Perlman much as it pertains to Marvel properties, but she's a big reason why "Guardians of the Galaxy" will be making its way to theaters next weekend. She toiled away as a screenwriter for a few years after her days at Nyu, cooking up projects with a science bent because that's where her passions lie — projects like "Challenger," a fascinating account of the investigation of the Challenger Space Shuttle disaster written as a love letter to Nobel Prize-winning physicist Richard Feynman. Then, she made her way to the comic book giant under the company's now-defunct screenwriting program and plucked the intergalactic heroes from obscurity, setting them on a crash course for the silver screen. It may be largely James Gunn's colorful vision on that screen, but it's definitely Perlman's passion that helped bring the property to the table in the first place.

Gravity took off at the box office over the weekend, and astro-experts have been fact-checking the film’s science left and right. After Neil deGrasse Tyson took to Twitter to chime in on the film’s faults, we decided to ask a panel of experts — astronomer Phil Plait and former astronauts Leroy Chiao and Tom Jones — to give us some definitive answers to our burning questions about the film’s accuracy. And they explained everything, from the mechanics of Sandra Bullock’s spacesuit to using a fire extinguisher in space.
Entertainment Weekly: Let’s start with the catastrophe that propels the film.

It's relatively rare for a science fiction movie to involve actual science, but Europa Report is one such. The panel was hosted by astronomer Dr Phil Plait, and the footage backed up the claims that this film takes science seriously. Director Sebastian Cordero, producer Ben Browning, composer Bear McCreary, Karolina Wydra, and science consultants Kevin Hand and Steve Vance made up the panel. The trailer, which is already online, shows the film starting as another space exploration before things go badly wrong when the expedition drills beneath the ice. It also suggests that at least one character goes adrift in space without a tie to his ship, making a match this year with Gravity. People, if you're in space, please remember to tie your safety laces."We had an idea that it would be cool to do a movie about first contact that didn't cheat anything. Initially we didn't know...

Eddie Ibrahim: Did you like the animation show? We have a movie coming up that is really interesting and it had a lot of science in science fiction. The moderator for this panel is Dr. Phil Plait. Dr. Plait: Howdy everybody. Whoa! Hall H baby, oh yea! This place is huge. Welcome to the Europa Report panel and I’m super excited to be here. One thing I want to say is that I’m an astronomer and I write for Slate.com. One of the things I like to think about is exploring space. Why do we do this? The top movies are have science fiction and is about why we want to explore space. We explore for resources and there are things out there we can use for our civilization. The other thing is dangers; it’s good to know what dangers there are in the neighborhood...

Gerry Anderson, creator of Thunderbirds, UFO, and Space: 1999, amongst many other legendary British sci-fi tv series, has died in Oxfordshire, England. He was 83, and had suffered from mixed dementia over the past few years, according to his son Jamie.
Anderson’s production company created “Supermarionation,” in which actors’ voice recordings are connected to sensors in puppet heads, so that the puppet mouths synchronize perfectly with the dialogue. This was leaps and bounds ahead of any other puppet show of the early 1960s, and is one of the hallmarks of Thunderbirds. Though none of the series using the process had very long runs, they have extremely loyal fandoms that continue today.
His live-action series, in particular the very cool UFO, and the Martin Landau/Barbara Bain-starring Space: 1999, also have cult followings – the box sets are highly recommended classic sci-fi viewing.
Author Neil Gaiman tweeted “Gerry Anderson made my childhood better.

Yes it’s true: Disney has acquired Lucasfilm, and yes there will be another Star Wars movie, in fact several, and an expansion of the brand, under Kathleen Kennedy, current Co-Chairman of Lucasfilm. She will become President of Lucasfilm, reporting to Walt Disney Studios Chairman Alan Horn, and she will serve as the brand manager for Star Wars, “working directly with Disney’s global lines of business to build, further integrate, and maximize the value of this global franchise.”
Perhaps most important to us, “Ms. Kennedy will serve as executive producer on new Star Wars feature films, with George Lucas serving as creative consultant. Today’s question comes from Todd, who writes: Phil Plait over at Bad Astronomy has a list of the coolest scientists on television. How about the coolest scientists in movies? My vote would have to be for Buckaroo Banzai. The Phil Plait piece is at Blastr, and it’s called “7 TV scientists that even real scientists approve of.” So it’s not quite “the coolest.” So let’s include cool TV scientists, too: Who are the coolest scientists on TV or in movies? Mine is a no-brainer: it’s the Doctor, of course. Though Dr. Banzai would come a close second. (If you have a suggestion for a Qotd, feel free to email me. Responses to this Qotd sent by email will be ignored; please post your responses here.)...

This week has a pretty impressive collection of DVDs and Blu-rays hitting the market, and instead of devoting individual reviews to each release, I’ve decided to try out a list of everything that I’m excited to pick up.
Many of these releases are items that we’ve discussed on recent Disc 2 episodes of the podcast, but a few might have slipped through, and I want to make sure that you all know how awesome (or potentially awesome) they are.
I’m actually going to start off with a DVD that came out a few weeks back, before getting into today’s releases.
Released August 24th:
Flight Of The Conchord: The Complete Collection DVD
Anyone who has been following me on Twitter over the past few weeks could easily pick up on the fact that I’ve completely fallen head over heels in love with Flight of the Conchords.

Can George Lucas finally be more right about Star Wars than the fans...?
I'm not aware of any intense rivalry between Star Trek and Star Wars fans; the two extended franchises probably had adequate influence over each other to live in peace on any Sf enthusiast's DVD shelf. But anyone out there looking for the Lucasverse to score points over the Federation can take comfort in the thought that hard science apparently defends the second-most outrageous piece of Star Wars revisionism after the Greedo/Han shooting controversy whilst dissing Klingon physics.
Astronomer Phil Plait, who debunks movie myths about matters celestial at badastronomy.com, apparently surmises that the much-reviled Ilm rethink of the Death Star explosion which added a concentric explosion ring to the conclusion of A New Hope in Lucas's revised 1997 theatrical release of the original Star Wars trilogy is more scientifically correct than its original appearance in...

Discovery takes us to the world beyond our own. New series "Bad Universe" illuminates the fact from the fiction, and entertains and educates the truths of infinity and beyond. From Discovery: The Universe is a dangerous place, with threats coming from any direction. But pop culture has played fast and loose with the facts, and quite often the things we know are all wrong, and when you're dealing with the universe, ignorance can be deadly. That's where Phil Plait comes in. He's on a mission to debunk the junk and reveal the real science behind the mysteries of this planet, our solar system and the bad universe we all live in. On Sunday, August 29...

Phil Plait, the bearded Bad Astronomer of the eponymous blog, has decided to take on not only Hollywood but the entire universe itself. He's got brand new discovery channel series hitting the airwaves this fall, chronicling the dangers we face by living on a very fragile planet in a very aggressive and deadly universe.
Will we survive?
We will if we can get Teh Gays behind The Bad Astronomer. He needs a good gay auxiliary to drive viewers to his upcoming show. So all you science (and beard) lovin' doorQs, spread the word:
The Universe is dangerous, but we have a Bad Hero to save us all....

Are you familiar with the blog Bad Astronomy? It’s where, in part, astronomer Phil Plait dissects how TV and film get the science wrong in their science fiction, and even sometimes in their science “fact,” as when he rips apart alien-abduction and moon-landing-hoax “documentaries.” Now, as Web Newser reports (and as Plait himself posted the other day), Bad Astronomy is making the jump to television: "Bad Universe" will air on Discovery this Fall, though a premiere date and time have not been settled on yet. As is often the case with Discovery, the network has ordered a "three-pack" of episodes. This allows the network to test them out on-air and gauge viewer response. If the viewer interest is high and the program delivers solid ratings, the network will probably order additional episodes.

Live from a slightly shabby Amtrak rail-car racing up the coast California, hell-bent on keeping it's rendezvous with destiny...
So there are three attack plans for Comic-Con. One involves hitting ever single possible panel you can, one involves saving yourself for every single party your can scam into or crash, and one involves meeting everyone you can stick your I-really-should-have-updated-this-before-i-left business card into their hand. If you stick to one of these plans, you come out of the convention certain you've maximized the potential return on your time, money and, in the case of the party-plan, the braincells you sacrificed to the BudholiawizerAle, the god of Obscene Alcohol Consumption. And if you think I followed my own learned advice, you'd be very wrong. I kept changing my mind which track I was to follow, one moment waiting in insanely long lines (Red Faction!) and the next, trying to scam along into the LucasArts party.

Not sure which Doctor you are? (Which Doctor Who, that is -- duh.) Virgin Media has the definitive quiz that will, once and for all, settle the question of whether you’re a cricket-playing celery eater or a jelly baby-eating scarf wearer. You know you’re dying to find out. I am, I am told, Christopher Eccleston. Which sounds just fine to me. (via bronxbee by email, via Phil Plait’s Bad Astronomy)...
