The Travel Channel president and general manager Patrick Younge will leave the business in January 2010, the company said Wednesday.
Pat Esser, president of Cox Communications, which owns Travel Channel, said he had known since 2007 of Younge's plan to coordinate his return to London when his youngest child entered high school.
In 2007, Cox's parent company Cox Enterprises acquired Travel Channel from Discovery Communications.
"As tough as I will find it to leave my team at Travel Channel Media, I'm fulfilling a promise I made to my two children, who remained in the U.K. when I joined TCM in 2005," Younge said in a statement. FremantleMedia Enterprises has partnered with the Travel Channel to become the exclusive international distributor for the network's original programming, the companies said Tuesday in the walk-up to MIPTV.
The agreement gives FME access to a catalog of more than 200 hours of programming from the Travel Channel as well as a first look at new productions for possible co-financing for international distribution.
Headlining the slate are several talent-led titles: "Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations," "Bizarre Foods With Andrew Zimmern," "Samantha Brown: Passport to China" and "Best Places to Find Cash and Treasures With Kirsten Gumm."
"As the world gets smaller, viewers are very excited to learn about new places and cultures," FME CEO David Ellender said. "We are delighted to deliver programming that takes a fascinating approach to the topic with the best of talent and the highest in production values in the genre."
Added Patrick Younge, president and GM of Travel Channel Media, "This opportunity enables us to both build the Travel Channel brand internationally and to support the U.S.
