The Berlin Film Festival was rocking Wednesday afternoon as Adam Sandler rolled into town with Spaceman, his latest feature for Netflix.
The Uncut Gems actor and his co-stars, including Carey Mulligan and Paul Dano, received buoyant rounds of applause as they entered the press conference for the film this afternoon in Berlin.
Adapted for the screen by Colby Day, the film is based on the novel Spaceman of Bohemia by Jaroslav Kalfař, which was released in 2017. It picks up with Sandler’s astronaut Jakub six months into a solitary research mission to the edge of the solar system, as he realizes that the marriage he left behind might not be waiting for him when he returns to Earth. Adam Sandler was faced with a new challenge on the set of his upcoming Netflix film “Spaceman”: using wires to appear like an astronaut floating in space. At the film’s Berlin Film Festival press conference on Wednesday, Sandler cheekily reflected on the experience, saying the “wires hurt me.”
“The wires were tough because my body’s not the most flexible body. The wires hurt me, they dug into me. The stuntmen who would wire me up every day, I would say ‘that hurts’ and they didn’t believe me,” Sandler said as the room erupted in laughter. “But we did it as a team. [Director] Johan [Renck] would say, ‘You don’t look like you’re floating, what are you doing?’ And then I would say, ‘Well, what should we do?’ And then they’d wire Johan up and he’d be like, ‘More like this!'”

After xix months of solitude on a spaceship, floating alone with no one to talk to, Astronaut Jakub Prochazka (Adam Sandler) has a bizarre encounter with an extraterrestrial (voiced by Paul Dano) in the trailer for Netflix’s Spaceman. Or is the spider-like creature merely a figment of his imagination?
“I really wanted to have a performance from him that had nothing to do with the Adam Sandler we all know,” said director Johan Renck (Chernobyl) to Netflix’s Tudum. “I don’t think people understand how [although] he may come across as funny and sweet and all that, he’s very intelligent, really smart, profound.”
The cast of the sci-fi drama, based on Jaroslav Kalfař’s Spaceman of Bohemia, includes Carey Mulligan (Maestro), Kunal Nayyar (Suspicion), Lena Olin (Hunters), and Isabella Rossellini (Julia). A new trailer has been released for the upcoming existential sci-fi drama from the director of the popular HBO series Chernobyl. Spaceman sees Adam Sandler continuing to explore the more dramatic genre after his acclaimed performance in Uncut Gems and Hustle. In Spaceman, Sandler plays an isolated astronaut who is clamoring for his wife back on Earth. He encounters a mysterious creature, which is presented in the form of a giant spider, although emanates the calm voice of Paul Dano. Netflix shares the newest trailer from the film that is due to hit the “Berlinale Special” programme at the 74th Berlin International Film Festival for its world premiere before streaming on Netflix.
In addition to Adam Sandler, the film also stars Carey Mulligan, Kunal Nayyar, Lena Olin, with Isabella Rossellini and Paul Dano. Johan Renck directs the movie from a script from writer Colby Day. The producers of the film include Channing Tatum,...

Adam Sandler is alone (and possibly seeing things) in his latest feature for Netflix, the sci-fi tinged Spaceman.
The meditative trailer follows the story of astronaut Jakub (Sandler), who is in the midst of a six-month solo mission to the outer reaches of the solar system.
Loneliness starts to get to him, and he begins to understand his marriage back on Earth may not be waiting for him at home. Along the way, a creature he discovers in the ship helps him understand where things went awry. The creature, who looks like a giant spider, may or may not be all in his head.
Carey Mulligan stars as Lenka, wife to Sandlers character, while Paul Dano voices Hanuš, the spider-like creature. Kunal Nayyar, Lena Olin, and Isabella Rossellini also star in the feature, based on Czech author Jaroslav Kalfař’s 2017 novel Spaceman of Bohemia.

Netflix has acquired worldwide rights to “His Three Daughters,” starring Natasha Lyonne, Elizabeth Olsen and Carrie Coon, following its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival.
Netflix had no comment on terms of the deal, which is reported to be for just under $7 million.
Written, directed and edited by Azazel Jacobs, the film presents a tense, captivating, and touching portrait of family dynamics with Lyonne, Olsen and Coon starring as sisters who converge after their father’s health declines.
In his review, Variety chief film critic Owen Gleiberman praised the drama as “funny, moving and true,” with its trio of lead actors delivering “superb” performances that “work together like a piece of chamber music.”
He wrote: “The film is a finely observed, winningly unsentimental memory play about three adult sisters who have come together to take care of their father, who is dying of cancer and approaching his final days.

Netflix has acquired Azazel Jacobs’ sisterhood drama His Three Daughters, which stars Carrie Coon, Elizabeth Olsen and Natasha Lyonne and bowed at the Toronto Film Festival.
The trio play estranged sisters forced to reunite when their father becomes seriously ill. The family drama sees the sisters converge as their father’s health steadily declines.
The deal, with a price tag north of $6 million, according to sources, represents Netflix’s third acquisition out of Toronto after the streaming giant picked up Anna Kendrick’s directorial debut, Woman of the Hour, for around $11 million after a world premiere at the festival. Netflix also nabbed the worldwide rights to Lucy Walker’s documentary Mountain Queen: The Summits of Lhakpa Sherpa after it was presented as a work-in-progress screening at TIFF.
After Toronto Netflix also paid around $20 million for the Richard Linklater-directed Hit Man, which bowed in Venice and stars Glen Powell and Adria Arjona.

Writer-director Azazel Jacobs has made a couple of indie pictures I really loved. French Exit gave Michelle Pfeiffer one of her meatiest roles in years and she ran with it in a delicious Paris-set tale. He also provided Debra Winger and Tracy Letts with terrific roles in the sophisticated The Lovers. And now Jacobs shows once again he knows how to attract top actors with well-written characters in the intimate drama His Three Daughters, which stars Carrie Coon, Elizabeth Olsen and Natasha Lyonne.
The trio play sisters gathering in the New York City apartment where their father (Jay O. Sanders) is down the hall (unseen for most of the film) and near death. Jacobs purposely wants the confined atmosphere to let the dialogue rise to the top. They have arrived to spend his final days with him, but also to renew their own dysfunctional dynamic. Movie rights have been picked up by Tango, Lia Buman’s film and television development financier and producer. Sarah Hayward is attached to write the script.
“Emily is a dominant force in the world of romantic comedy and we feel so lucky to bring to the screen a story that has already delighted so many on the page. The irreverent and whip smart writing delivers on classic romcom tropes while avoiding cliches, making it perfect for a cozy and refreshing adaptation,” Buman said.
The novel follows Nora, a cutthroat literary agent who, convinced by her sister to spend an August holiday in North Carolina, keeps running into Charlie, a bookish, brooding editor from the city. It would be a meet-cute if not for the fact that they’ve met many times and it’s never been cute.

Book Lovers — the New York Times bestseller from Emily Henry — is getting the movie treatment.
Tango — the production-finance outfit behind Aftersun and Weird: The Weird Al Yankovic Story — will develop and produce the rom-com as a feature film. Girls and Modern Love writer Sarah Heyward is attached to adapt.
The book, which was published by Penguin Random House imprint Berkley, follows a literary agent, Nora, and a brooding book editor Charlie who run into each other during a summer holiday in North Carolina. The synopsis reads: “It would be a meet-cute if not for the fact that they’ve met many times and it’s never been cute. If Nora knows she’s not an ideal heroine, Charlie knows he’s nobody’s hero, but as they are thrown together again and again — in a series of coincidences no editor worth their salt would allow — what they discover might just...

After two years of being virtual-only, the Sundance Film Festival returns — at least, partially — to an in-person format. And the return to Park City comes with a whole lot of questions.
“We’ve been back at Cannes, we’ve been back at Toronto, but we haven’t yet been back to Sundance. And, for us, Sundance is the Super Bowl of festivals. It’s really the most important festival for domestic buyers,” notes IFC Films president Arianna Bocco.
The Hollywood Reporter spoke to some two dozen Sundance veterans — including distributors, producers, and sales agents — and top of mind for attendees are questions about the festival’s commitment to a hybrid format, the shake-up in the programming team, and, of course, what a return to in-person screenings will mean for the market. Ask Sight Unseen’s Julia Lebedev, “Is it gonna be the same feeling in the room?”

Paul Mescal heartbreakingly leads another A24 drama.
The “Normal People” breakout star appears in both “God’s Creatures” (out now) and “Aftersun,” two films set to be distributed by A24. Mescal plays a father adrift on a holiday alongside his 11-year-old daughter Sophie (Francesca Corio) in Turkey in the late 1990s. A present-day Sophie (Celia Rowlson-Hall) reflects over 20 years later on the tense trip with her father.
“Aftersun” premiered at 2022 Cannes’ Critics Week, marking writer/director Charlotte Wells’ feature debut. Scottish filmmaker Wells previously wrote and directed three short films while pursuing her master’s degree at New York University.
Academy Award winner Barry Jenkins produced “Aftersun” through his production company Pastel, which he co-founded with Adele Romanski and Mark Ceryak. Amy Jackson of Unified Theory also produced. Jenkins described crafting “Aftersun” as “organizing these memories into a devastating film that had me in the corner crying even though I have...

Daniel Radcliffe plays a parallel universe version of Weird Al Yankovic in the (faux) biopic “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story,” according to the film’s writer and director Eric Appel. Check out the video, above.
“This version of Weird Al that we’ve created in the movie is like a bizarro version of Weird Al that exists in an alternate universe,” director Eric Appel said at TheWrap and Shutterstock’s Interview and Portrait Studio at the Toronto Film Festival, where the movie debuted.
Appel added: “What we really wanted was to find an actor that both worked well in drama and in comedy and that would get what we were going for, have the comedy chops to pull it off, and also be able to, like, 100 fully commit to playing this absurd comedy as straight as possible and as dramatic as possible.” Radcliffe met those criteria and then some.

The film is produced by Adele Romanski, Barry Jenkins and Mark Ceryak for Pastel and Amy Jackson for Unified Theory.
There is also a quiet battle going on among agents for the signature of filmmaker Wells.

A24 is staying in the Paul Mescal business.
The studio that also shepherded the “Normal People” actor’s Directors’ Fortnight entry “God’s Creatures” has acquired North American rights for Charlotte Wells’ well-liked Critics’ Week entry “Aftersun,” IndieWire has learned. A source close to the film’s production confirmed that the studio bought rights to release the drama in the U.S. and Canada in a deal in Cannes on Monday. The buy is said to be in the mid-seven-figure range. (The news was later confirmed by A24.)
“Aftersun,” a standout from the Critics’ Week sidebar that annually promotes first- and second-time directors, stars Mescal as a father on a melancholy holiday with his 11-year-old daughter Sophie, played by Francesca Corio, in Turkey in the late 1990s. Sophie, in the present day, is reflecting on the holiday they shared two decades prior. Memories real and imaginary collide, filling the gaps between...

New York-based Scottish filmmaker Charlotte Wells’ feature debut “Aftersun,” premiering at Cannes Critics’ Week, aims to achieve a balance of joy and melancholia in equal measure.
Framed as a look back at a father-daughter holiday at a Turkish resort in the late 1990s, with occasional mini Dv footage adding to the period texture, the film is an ode to nostalgia with hints of something far darker.
Wells’ first short, “Tuesday” (2015), was about the loss of her father, which happened when she was a teenager. “I wanted to explore a different period in that relationship, like a young father and his daughter on holiday. Even just visually having a young parent, like a young man and his daughter, it just felt like it could be something interesting and fun and compelling,” Wells told Variety.
The script began in a different form in that it was more conventional and plot-driven, and the more she worked on it,...

Breaking Bad actor Aaron Paul was supposed to make a cameo in Eric Appel’s Weird Al Yankovic biopic, but life happened.
In 2010, Paul appeared in a Funny or Die sketch directed by Eric Appel called Weird: The Al Yankovic Story. In the sketch, Paul plays Yankovic and also stars Olivia Wilde, and Patton Oswalt.
Things have come full circle as now Appel is co-writer (with Al Yankovic), and director of the new biopic coming out. In an interview with CinemaBlend, Paul mentions how he loves the fact that Daniel Radcliffe is lead in the film.
“It’s so great. I loved doing that. I love Al [Yankovic], I love Eric Appel, who wrote the skit for Funny Or Die and directed it. And he wrote the film with Al, and he’s directing the feature as well. I read that script years ago and it was just so over the top beautiful.

The Roku Channel released a first look image of Evan Rachel Wood (“Westworld”) as Madonna in “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story.”
The upcoming biopic will dive into all aspects of the legendary comedian and recording artist’s life and career — including his rise to fame with early hits like “Eat It” and “Like a Surgeon,” which he famously parodied from Madonna’s “Like a Virgin” (with permission from the Queen of Pop).
In addition to the first look of Wood as Madonna, Roku also announced multiple additions to the “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story” cast on Wednesday. Rainn Wilson (“The Office”) portrays radio broadcaster Dr. Demento, Julianne Nicholson (“Mare of Easttown”) plays Weird Al’s mother Mary Yankovic and Toby Huss (“Halt and Catch Fire”) is Weird Al’s father Nick Yankovic.
The Roku Original Film, which began production in Los Angeles last month, stars Daniel Radcliffe as Weird Al.
