Paramount TV Studios president Nicole Clemens is set to assume a bigger role at Paramount+. Clemens is in discussions to take over some of the duties left by outgoing head of programming Julie McNamara, an individual with knowledge of the situation told TheWrap.
Clemens, whose new role is not yet official, would not have the exact same role and title as McNamara. For starters, she would keep her title as head of Paramount TV Studios and would not take over all of McNamara’s duties. McNamara exited as Paramount+’s head of programming earlier on Thursday.
Reps for ViacomCBS declined to comment.
Tom Ryan, ViacomCBS’ president and CEO of streaming, hinted in his Thursday note regarding McNamara that the leadership structure for the content team would look a little different going forward. “I’ll have more to share in the coming weeks on our content structure and look forward to...

Josh Schwartz is finally getting John Green’s “Looking For Alaska” off the page and onto the screen.
Hulu is in the midst of closing a deal with Schwartz and Stephanie Savage’s Fake Empire and Paramount Television for an eight-episode limited series based on the book, insiders with knowledge of the project tell TheWrap.
“The O.C.” producer, who has been working to adapt Green’s best-selling young adult novel for over a decade, penned the pilot and will serve as executive producer and showrunner. Green, Jessica Tuchinsky, Mark Waters and Marty Bowen of Temple Hill will also executive produce, along with Fake Empire’s Lis Rowinski as co-executive produce.

“Looking for Alaska” is told through the perspective of teen Miles “Pudge” Halter, as he enrolls in a boarding school to try to gain a deeper understanding of life. He meets Alaska Young, a student who he falls in love with while she guides him through his personal “labyrinth of suffering” throughout the school year. When Alaska unexpectedly dies, Miles must work through his grief as he and his other close friends work to uncover the truth behind Alaska’s death.
The project has gone through many incarnations since Schwartz first received the then-unpublished manuscript for “The Fault in Our Stars” author’s debut novel in 2005, with former Paramount Pictures boss Gail Berman originally purchasing the rights for Schwartz to write and potentially direct a feature and Paramount TV president Amy Powell helping to move the project from the feature division to TV.
The limited series marks Schwartz and Savage’s second project at the streaming service, along with “Marvel’s Runaways,” which was renewed for a Season 2.

Paramount Network has given a 10-episode series order to First Wives Club, a half-hour comedy based on the popular 1996 film from Paramount Pictures, from Girls Trip co-writer Tracy Oliver, who’s attached to write and executive produce the series, and Paramount Television. Production is scheduled to begin in New York City this summer for a 2019 premiere.
Paramount Network originally confirmed a pilot order for the project earlier this month. The network has now completed a deal for a series pickup. All Paramount orders so far have been straight-to-series.

Paramount Network has given a series order to an adaptation of “First Wives Club” from “Girls Trip” writer Tracy Oliver.
An adaptation of the 1996 film starring Diane Keaton, Bette Midler and Goldie Hawn, the 10-episode comedy will follow a group of women who band together after their marriages fall apart, and who find strength in their sisterhood — and, of course, a little revenge.
Oliver will write and executive produce the Paramount Television-produced series, which is slated to premiere in 2019.

Karen Rosenfelt, original film producer Scott Rudin, and Tony Hernandez of Jax Media will also serve as executive producers on the series.
“Tracy Oliver is a brilliant writer and the perfect visionary to bring this unforgettable story from the big screen to the small screen in a fresh and contemporary way,” said Paramount Network production and development boss Keith Cox.
“‘Girls Trip’ was one of the funniest comedies in recent memory and we know Tracy will breathe new life, and some serious laughs, into these beloved ‘First Wives Club’ characters,” said Paramount TV president Amy Powell.
A previous attempt to adapt “First Wives Club” for the small screen, with Alyson Hannigan and Megan Hilty attached to star, was launched at Paramount’s sister network TV Land in 2016, but did not make it past the pilot stage.

The scripted drama boom is changing the entire TV industry. But is it a change for the better?
“It’s an exciting time,” is a refrain now most commonly uttered by those in the business of making content for the Us streaming services.
Not only have Netflix, Amazon and co fuelled a surge in the volume of scripted content, subscription video on demand services (SVoDs) are also doing their bit, as they expand and evolve, to change the business and art of high-end television.
“Partly it’s driven by the SVoDs, partly it’s driven by the retrenching of the feature film business,” says Ted Miller, co-head of the television department at Creative Artists Agency (CAA), whose client Matthew Weiner is among the high-profile writer-producers working on streaming series.

Serialised drama follows Nazi hunters in South America after Second World War.
Paramount Television and Telefe, the Argentinian network that Viacom acquired last year, announced on Wednesday they will team up to develop the one-hour, multilingual drama.
Created by journalist-turned-tv writer Jason George, Cazadores (Hunters) is based on recently declassified documents about the men and women who resolved to track down the Nazi high command that fled to South America after the Second World War.
The serialised cable drama begins as the war is ending and a Cold War begins, yet the hunters, many of whom had personally suffered under the Nazi regime, refuse to forget the crimes of the Third Reich.
“We are excited to have Telefe as part of the Viacom family,” president of Paramount TV Amy Powell (pictured) said. “Their unmatched leadership in Argentina’s high-growth market and their on-the-ground knowledge of this fascinating moment in history, will allow for...

After a year of flops, executive committee takes helm at the studio.
After weeks of speculation, the studio’s chairman and CEO is on his way out after a disastrous 2016 at the box office, insiders say.
Brad Grey’s tenure at Paramount Pictures had been on shaky ground after a string of releases crashed and burned and now control of the studio is reportedly in the hands of an interim cabal of senior executives until a replacement is found.
The operating committee is understood to comprise Amy Powell, the highly regarded head of TV and digital, film chief Marc Evans, COO Andrew Gumpert, and marketing and distribution supremo Megan Colligan.
The group covers all aspects of the studio and has been given oversight by Bob Bakish, who was appointed CEO of parent company Viacom in December after vice-chairman Shari Redstone and her father Sumner Redstone called off a possible Viacom-CBS merger.

True Detective season one director Cary Fukunaga is set to direct and executive produce a new drama series called The Alienist, which is based on the Caleb Carr thriller. Fukunaga does great work and is currently developing the big screen adaptation of Stephen King’s It. This new project he’s jumping on seems like it's a good fit for him.

Success can be a double-edged sword. Delivering the first season of the highly acclaimed TV series True Detective has clearly made director Cary Fukunaga a sought-after commodity – and deservedly so. However, an influx of work opportunities can lead to something of a backlog, with fans chomping at the bit for one project or the other. This makes today’s announcement maddening for those patiently awaiting Fukunaga’s version of Stephen King’s It, since it has the director moving full-steam ahead with a television adaptation of the 1994 novel The Alienist.

With his award-winning success directing all of True Detective's first season on the books, it’s perhaps not surprising that other TV series have been scrambling to secure Cary Fukunaga’s services. You might have been wondering why there’s been a dearth of reports this week about new film-to-tv adaptations. Don’t worry, that dry spell has ended as Paramount announced that they’ll be hauling out yet another title from its film back catalogue. This co-op effort will mark the second time Bruckheimer has been involved with the title, as he produced the original feature. Exclusive: As the TV biz prepares to celebrate another ground breaking year tonight, underwritten in no small effort by feature talent, the remarkable thing to consider is how much more of this is coming. Nickelodeon hasn’t been making headlines for good reasons lately. The kid-targeted network lost its popular Victorious/iCarly crossover series Sam & Cat sooner than expected due to a clash involving its stars Ariana Grande and Jennette McCurdy, and it also recently moved animated fantasy series The Legend of Korra online after extremely low ratings. However, things may be turning around for the network today, with word that it has partnered with Paramount TV to revive the 2003 Jack Black comedy School of Rock as a live-action series.
The new show, which has landed a 13-episode, straight-to-series order from Nickelodeon, will follow the same premise of the film, in which rocker Dewey Finn (Black’s role) posed as a substitute teacher at a prestigious prep school, imparting to his young pupils the skills necessary to play and appreciate rock ‘n’ roll.

TV miniseries are all the rage these days, from Fox’s 24: Live Another Day to FX’s Fargo, and it’s not hard to see why. The ability to play a story out across a whole season allows writers and directors to toy with convention and pursue ambitious plots that just wouldn’t work as well on the big screen, while the limited episode count and commitment attracts big name stars like Halle Berry (on CBS’s Extant) and Matthew McConaughey (who did a one-season run on ‘anthology series’ True Detective, which is basically a set of self-contained miniseries from the same showrunner). Now, Oscar winner Dustin Lance Black (Milk) has become the latest Hollywood talent to contract the miniseries bug, and will be adapting Scott Berg’s Pulitzer Prize-winning biography Lindbergh for Paramount Television.

Under the agreement, Paramount TV will have first-look rights to produce and distribute scripted television programming developed by Anonymous Content for broadcast, premium cable, cable and online. Paramount TV’s first project with Anonymous Content, run by managing partners Steve Golin and Michael Sugar, will be a drama series inspired by Caleb Carr’s best-selling novel, The Alienist, which is set in 1896 New York. “I’ve known Steve both professionally and personally for many years, and I have enormous respect for the sophisticated and entertaining movies and television Anonymous Content creates,” said Paramount Pictures chairman and CEO Brad Grey. “As we build our television business, we are proud to welcome the Anonymous team into the Paramount family.

Exclusive: Paramount chairman and CEO Brad Grey continues to stray from the conventional path in his hiring choices for the film studio’s recently re-launched TV division. After naming Amy Powell — Paramount’s head of Digital Entertainment and Insurge Pictures who has no TV experience — as President of Paramount Television in July, I hear the division is bringing in Jennifer Howell as head of comedy. While Howell comes from a TV comedy background, it is all in animation. She most recently headed 20th Century Fox TV‘s animation department since its creation in 2008 until this past May, developing such series as Fox’s Bob’s Burgers, Murder Police, Napoleon Dynamite and Allen Gregory. Before that, Howell was Evp at Matt Stone and Trey Parker’s production company Important Films and worked as a supervising producer on South Park where she also has voiced the character of Bebe Stevens. The plan...
