- In 1994, Huizenga bought the Miami Dolphins, NFL football team, and their stadium for $168 Million. In 2009, he sold the team without winning a Superbowl trophy during his ownership.
- During1968 in Pompano Beach, Florida, Huizenga started a waste hauling business with a single garbage truck. By 1983, Waste Management was the largest U.S. garbage collector after acquiring 133 smaller companies.
- In 1984, Huizenga formed Blockbuster Video Corporation which became the leading movie rental chain after nine years of expansion.
- In 1993, Huizenga formed the NHL Florida Panthers hockey team. In 1996, the Panthers played in the Stanley Cup finals. By 2009, Huizenga sold off his three sports organizations.
- In 1993, Huizenga was the founding owner of the Florida Marlins baseball team. In 1997, the Marlins won the World Series Championship.
