In 1992, while thousands of musicians threw on their flannel, strapped on a motorcycle wallet and converged on Seattle in hopes of becoming the next Nirvana, I was one of the few people moving away from the hottest city in the country. I'd been writing for the local music monthly The Rocket since 1988 and by 1991, I was (sad to say) more than a little burned out on the scene. So when Cameron Crowe began filming "Singles," his follow-up to "Say Anything," I wasn't one of those flocking to become an extra or trying to get a glimpse of oft-sighted star Matt Dillon, who was playing the lead singer of faux grunge band Citizen Dick. When the movie finally opened in September 1992, I caught a screening in San Francisco. I expected to see some faces I knew, but I was not expecting to see my own name on the big screen, even...

The video on this page was an undercover project, I learn, at Ebertfest 2012. Most of my Far-Flung Correspondents and Demanders were there in person, and those who couldn't be contributed their voices via audio files. The idea originated with Kevin B. Lee, who did the audiotaping and editing. It was the inspiration of Michael Mirasol to use the foreign languages of those who spoke one. The video essay is the first in a series about critics by Kevin B. Lee, who is editor of the Press Play video essays at Indiewire.com--which he and Matt Zoller Seitz have built into the best video essay source on the web. Kevin was a special correspondent for our TV show, "Ebert Presents at the Movies." He had the idea of beginning with my list of the Greatest Films of All Time for the 1982 Sight & Sound poll. This was rather inspired, because that first list is my "purest,...

Although most religions forbid it, human societies throughout history have accepted suicide as a reality. Sometimes, as in Japan, it was seen as a matter of personal honor. Usually it was seen as an act of despair, or a manifestation of insanity. It can also be seen as a rational act, and to assist someone in committing it can be seen as an act of mercy.
I have never, even in my darkest hours, considered suicide. But with my troubles I have been fortunate; I've never had unbearable physical pain. In Barry Levinson's movie "You Don't Know Jack," Dr. Jack Kevorkian's best friend says his mother told him: "Imagine the worst toothache you've ever had. Now imagine that's how it feels in every bone of your body."
After Paul Schrader assured me Al Pacino's performance in the film was the best of the year, I rented it from Netflix,...

I was recently asked by Sony if I wanted to review Bad Boys on Blu-ray and as a fan of the movie from way back when, it took me about a second to reply saying ‘yes please!’
If you’re not familiar with the movie, Bad Boys sees Will Smith and Martin Lawrence as two Miami narcotics cops who are put in charge of finding out who stole $100 worth of dope from the Miami police station! Tea Leoni also appears as the one and only witness and Smith and Lawrence have to jump through various comedy hoops in order to convince her that she should stay and help them.
This movie is action packed to the brim, and so it should be as it’s directed by the action movie king himself, Michael Bay and produced by action producing legends Jerry Bruckheimer and Don Simpson.
Amazon Synopsis: Slick to a fault,...

This is a golden age for film criticism. Never before have more critics written more or better words for more readers about more films. But already you are ahead of me, and know this is because of the internet.
Twenty years ago a good-sized city might have contained a dozen people making a living from writing about films, and for half of them the salary might have been adequate to raise a family. Today that city might contain hundreds, although (the Catch-22) not more than one or two are making a living.
Film criticism is still a profession, but it's no longer an occupation. You can't make any money at it. This provides an opportunity for those who care about movies and enjoy expressing themselves. Anyone with access to a computer need only to use free blogware and set up in business.
Countless others write long and often expert posts on such sites as IMDb,...

Planet Earth: The Complete BBC Series [HD DVD]
If you haven’t yet seen The BBC’s incredible and ground breaking series ‘Planet Earth’, narrated by Sir David Attenborough, you should take advantage of this offer or pick it up a similarly decent price on DVD or Blu-ray.
From Amazon: As of its release in early 2007, Planet Earth is quite simply the greatest nature/wildlife series ever produced. Following the similarly monumental achievement of The Blue Planet: Seas of Life, this astonishing 11-part BBC series is brilliantly narrated by Sir David Attenborough and sensibly organized so that each 50-minute episode covers a specific geographical region and/or wildlife habitat (mountains, caves, deserts, shallow seas, seasonal forests, etc.) until the entire planet has been magnificently represented by the most astonishing sights and sounds you’ll ever experience from the comforts of home. The premiere episode, “From Pole to Pole,” serves as...

The SAG Awards sparkled. Women in beautiful dresses, perfectly accessorized; men crisply attired in suits or tuxes; and flash cameras and video everywhere—it was quite a scene. There was drama …
… and romance:
Boldface names made their way down the red carpet: the bolder the name, the faster they moved. Oops, there went Brad Pitt (Benjamin Button). Too late. But Alec Baldwin (30 Rock) did pause for a moment:
He picked up an award later that evening for male actor in a comedy series. Meanwhile, the unofficial award for cutest kids went to the ones playing adman Don Draper’s children in Mad Men. Kiernan Shipka looks sweet …
… but advised me that if she won an award (she did, as part of an ensemble), it would go next to her Tae Kwon Do trophies. Easy there tiger! Meanwhile, her cast-mate and fellow winner Aaron Hart is a handsome little fellow …
