"Maybe it's the universe telling us we're selling out..." Mama Bear Studios has released the official trailer for an indie comedy film titled Rollers, from filmmaker Isaiah Smallman making his first feature after a number of shorts. Rollers is "about a group of friends learning how to say goodbye to a historical musical venue that for years has served as a pillar of their community." Rufus is a closet alcoholic and everything he loves is smashed together into one place: Rollers. He gave up a promising career as a musician in order to keep it alive, but the historic venue, once owned by his parents, is in trouble and he's running out of ways to save it, and himself. His friends urge him to move on, but can he? Tough question to confront. The film stars Johnny Ray Gill as Rufus, along with Kevin Bigley, Vicky Jeudy, Kate Cobb, Joel Allen,...

Vision Film has acquired rights to I Love Us, a romantic drama from Danny A. Abeckaser’s 2B Films. Abeckaser stars with Jackie Cruz, Katie Cassidy, Harlow Jane, David James Elliott, Robert Davi, Jasper Polish, Greg Finley, James Madio, David James Elliott, Elya Baskin and Courtney Lopez in the ensemble, which wrapped production at the end of March after a shoot in Los Angeles. It will get a 10-city theatrical run along with VOD in September.
In the script by Kosta Kondilopoulos, a seasoned thief (Abeckaser) trades in his criminal ways for a “normal” married life after falling in love with a single mother (Cassidy) that catches him off guard. But when tragedy strikes, he’s forced to take one last job to pay off old debts and keep his new family together, creating conflict all around him.
Abeckaser also produced with Wild7Films’ Kyle Stefanski and Mike Hermosa, and Above the Clouds’ Jeff Hoffman. Executive producers are Katie Cassidy, Ron Rofe, Isaac Gindi, Eddie Gindi and Gustavo Nascimento.
“I Love Us was such a passion project and a labor of love. I felt the movie deserved to be with a company that really believes and loves the movie like I do. Lisa Romanoff at Vision was the right person for this journey for myself as director along with producers Kyle Stefanski, Mike Hermosa and Jeff Hoffman. We are excited for people to see it.”

Gravitas Ventures has acquired rights to the sports documentary Resurgence, directed by social media fitness stars Heber Cannon and Marston Sawyers (aka the Buttery Bros). The pic, which follows the shakeup of the worldwide annual fitness competition The CrossFit Games in the midst of the pandemic, will debut on iTunes and Apple TV on July 20, followed by digital platforms and VOD on August 3.
“With Covid-19 restrictions allowing for only 10 athletes versus the usual 80-100+, it’s the first and possibly last year we will be able to tell interesting angles from every athlete competing,” the directors said. “We are honored to have been there for this intimate event, and excited for the world to see the behind the scenes of what went on at the 2020 CrossFit Games.”
“The collaboration among the Buttery Bros., CrossFit HQ, and Gravitas has been smooth and it’s great to get the band back together,” said Michael Murphy, President of Gravitas Ventures. “Previous CrossFit films are immediate best-sellers, and we expect the same from Resurgence which is awesome in scope, story-telling, and quality.”

When it comes to rewarding the best comedic cast on television, the SAG Awards often simply go with the biggest cast. Recent winners like “Orange is the New Black” (2014-2016), “Glee” (2009), “Desperate Housewives” (2004-2005) and “Ally McBeal” (1998) all prevailed thanks in part to having the most cast members on the voting ballot. Interestingly enough, all four of these were also hour-long dramedies, which suggests SAG voters are more apt to give the prize to large casts when they’re also in large productions.
What does this statistic mean in terms of predicting the 2018 SAG Awards? “Orange is the New Black” once again boasts the biggest comedy cast with a record-setting 45 men and women nominated for the Netflix prison series. That’s up from 37 cast members in 2016, 34 in 2015, and 40 in 2014. Of this year’s other nominated ensembles, Netflix’s “Glow” consists of 18 cast members, followed by HBO’s “Veep” at 15, ABC...

1. “Orange is the New Black” Season 5 (available June 9)
Why Should I Watch It? “Orange is the New Black” got dark last year. Not that Jenji Kohan’s award-winning Netflix original hasn’t always been open to heavy topics and painful arcs, but the end of Season 4 took things to the next level. Perhaps it was always planned. Perhaps it was their recent Emmys re-classification as a drama. Perhaps it was the mood of a nation. But it was memorable, haunting television. And we’re eager to see what comes next.
Best Episode: Our esteemed TV Editor Liz Shannon Miller chose the best episode of Season 5 after reviewing the entire season: Episode 5, “Sing It, White Effie,” features “focuses on Janae Watson (Vicky Jeudy) in the flashbacks, and features heartbreaking moments both in the past and the present.” That’s as much as we can say without spoiling things, so check IndieWire...

In naming Spotlight one of the best ensembles of 2016, we said, “Tom McCarthy’s procedural moves with the precision of a fine timepiece. Rarely does one find a film where all is tune, from the pacing, writing, direction and acting. Highlighting the heroic work of the Boston Globe’s Spotlight team, the group is headed by Robby Robinson (Michael Keaton) who risks life long friendships to get the story right. His team includes Mike Rezendes (played by a compulsive Mark Ruffalo), Sacha Pfeiffer (Rachel McAdams) and Matt Caroll (Brian d’Arcy James). Encouraged by a Boston outsider, editor Marty Baron (Live Schreiber), the team undertakes a long-term investigation of abuses in the Catholic Church. In the mix are the lawyers on both sides, played by Stanley Tucci and Billy Crudup. Rightfully overshadowing that other journalism docudrama, James Vanderbilt’s incompetent Truth, the difference here amongst many things is perhaps access:...

A morning full of eye-opening surprises, the nominations for the 22nd Screen Actors Guild nominations were announced.
The standout nods were the inclusion of Straight Outta Compton, Beasts Of No Nation, Sarah Silverman, Amy Adams, Michael Shannon, Idris Elba and two for Dame Helen Mirren.
Not among the perceived hopefuls called were Sylvester Stallone, Charlotte Rampling, Michael Keaton, Mark Ruffalo, The Martian and The Hateful Eight.
Two nominating panels – one for television and one for film – each composed of 2,200 randomly selected union members from across the United States, chose this year’s nominees.
Some of the Sags choices were head-scratchers to be sure, but we’re thinking that the Oscar picks may be very different when The Academy announces their nominations next month live on Thursday, January 14, 2016, at 5:30 a.m. Pt at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.

Hollywood blacklist drama Trumbo has led the nominations for the 22nd Screen Actors Guild Awards with three nods for lead actor Bryan Cranston, supporting actress Helen Mirren and the ensemble cast. The Martian and The Hateful Eight were shut out.
Set in 1947, the film centres on Dalton Trumbo (Cranston), who was Hollywood’s top screenwriter, until he and other artists were jailed and blacklisted for their political beliefs.
Cranston will go up against Johnny Depp for Black Mass, Leonardo DiCaprio for The Revenant, Michael Fassbender for Steve Jobs and Eddie Redmayne for The Danish Girl.
Films that secured two nominations included Beasts Of No Nation, The Big Short, Carol, The Danish Girl, Room, Spotlight - whose outstanding cast nod will only strengthen its status as best picture Oscar frontrunner — and Steve Jobs.

The 22nd annual SAG Awards nominations were announced this morning and it's full of surprises! Sylvester Stallone, loved by critics and the National Board of Review for his performance in "Creed," was ignored. So was Kristen Stewart's supporting performance in "Clouds of Sils Maria." Matt Damon, who was so good and carried "The Martian" from start to finish, was also missing from the list.
But here's what I love about the SAG noms. First, Sarah Silverman's first dramatic performance in "I Smile Back" was embraced. And I'm also happy with the inclusion of "Room's" Brie Larson and the fantastic child actor, Jacob Tremblay. The endearing "Carol" also received noms for both Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, and Saoirse Ronan's performance in the beautiful "Brooklyn" also received a nomination.
The big winner of the SAG noms is Bleecker Street's "Trumbo." Missing from earlier critics awards (see here...

Nominees for the 22nd Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards were unveiled this morning in Hollywood, with a fair amount of surprises to be had. Leading the pack is Trumbo, which picked up three nominations, then a large batch of films behind it with two each: Beasts of No Nation, The Big Short, Carol, The Danish Girl, Room, Spotlight, and Steve Jobs.
Perhaps most surprising is no mention of The Hateful Eight, which has one of the year’s best ensembles. Also of questionable note is the inclusion of Helen Mirren for Woman in Gold, a film all but forgotten (we suppose Harvey Weinstein’s campaigning indeed worked). There’s also the welcome nods to Michael Shannon in 99 Homes and Sarah Silverman in I Smile Back, as well as an ensemble nod to Straight Outta Compton. Check out the full list of nominees below ahead of the ceremony on Saturday, Jan.

She’s the new girl on the cellblock, but Ruby Rose is already a star. For the third season of Orange Is the New Black, the Australian model, VJ, and recording artist plays Stella, one of Litchfield’s latest prisoners with an alluring stare and sharp wit who wreaks havoc on the already fragile Alex-Piper relationship. The Oitnb cast is famously tight-knit, but Rose says she was welcomed with literal open arms by Vicky Jeudy (Janae Watson) — the two were seated side-by-side in Rose’s first scene. We caught up with Rose at Orangecon in New York, where we chatted about singing Taylor Swift songs on set and having to admit to co-star Lori Petty that she had a tattoo of Petty's face on her back. My understanding is that the Oitnb set is enormous. Did you ever get lost?Yes, many times. We filmed in an abandoned psychiatric ward for children,...

Being an inmate at Litchfield Penitentiary has never looked so Hot! "Orange Is the New Black" stars Taylor Schilling and Laura Prepon show some serious skin in the latest issue of Rolling Stone magazine. Taylor swaps her orange jumpsuit for a semi-sheer white tank, which she wears without a bra, as her on-screen girlfriend rocks a denim button-down shirt with nothing underneath. In the accompanying article, Schilling and Prepon join costars Laverne Cox, Uzo Aduba, Natasha Lyonne, Dascha Polanco, Selenis Leyva as well as show creator, Jenji Kohan to talk about the success of the series. The famous TV inmates open up about landing their life-changing roles on the uber-popular Netflix show, after struggling to find other work. The 21st Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards Nominations were revealed Wednesday morning, serving as yet another precursor on the long road to the Oscars.
In the film categories, Birdman was the big winner, scoring four nominations, including for Michael Keaton, Edward Norton and Emma Stone, as well as the collective ensemble cast. Boyhood followed right in its footsteps with three nods for Ethan Hawke, Patricia Arquette and another ensemble nomination.
The big surprises of the morning’s nominations started with Jake Gyllenhaal for Nightcrawler, a bubble contender in a crowded Best Actor race, Jennifer Aniston for Cake, a bubble contender in a disappointingly less crowded Best Actress race, Robert Duvall in the poorly reviewed The Judge and Naomi Watts for St. Vincent (Watts was in Birdman as well, but that must’ve slipped SAG’s minds).

As some of you may know, I'm a bit of a jack(ass) of all trades. I follow the film industry for Lr, and critique films. But I'm also an actor, I front a rock band, I'm a DJ, film editor, and director as well. Basically, when it comes to entertainment, there's nothing I don't do. For some time now, I've been mulling over bringing some of my other interests to Lr, and I'll be starting with the SAG Awards. How? Well, I've been a member of SAG for 6 years now and I also am part of the voting process. That means every year I am sent screeners of all the films being considered for awards.
Here's where a new running feature comes into play:
As I start receiving these screeners, I will write special reviews for each one and publish them here. Then, as we near the voting deadline,...

Filled with action and tension, the season finale “We Have Manners. We’re Polite,” leaves us in anticipation for the next season to arrive. Vee (Lorraine Toussaint) plots to get out of trouble by getting Black Cindy (Adrienne C. Moore) and Janae (Vicky Jeudy) to tell the men investigating Red’s (Kate Mulgrew) attack that they believe Crazy Eyes (Uzo Aduba) committed the crime. Blindly, and stupidly, following Vee, the two follow their orders and Crazy Eyes becomes the number one suspect in the case, even though many inmates said they believed Vee attacked Red. To get herself out of trouble, Vee tells Crazy Eyes that she was the one who attacked Red and Crazy Eyes begins to believe that she was the one who did it. When questioned, Crazy Eyes tells the police she is confused and doesn’t remember it but that she attacked Red. The investigators, who...

Freshly back from furlough, Piper (Taylor Schilling) receives yet another letter from Alex (Laura Prepon), who she just can’t seem to get off of her mind. Flashbacks show the two in the first stages of their relationship. Piper gets punched in the face by the girlfriend she didn’t know Alex had and then forgives Alex when she runs into her at the bar, a cycle seen throughout their whole relationship. In another flashback, Piper tells Polly (Maria Dizzia) that she doesn’t think she’s a lesbian, but that she’s experimenting. Then, the doorbell rings and Piper and Polly find a bag on fire (with an unexpected surprise inside) – the oldest trick in the book. Once back in the present, Piper uses the same trick against Polly after finding out that Polly slept with Larry.
It seems that Vee (Lorraine Toussaint) has restored Litchfield to the way it used to be.

I canceled my Netflix account a couple of months ago, so I haven't been able to watch its new original series Orange Is the New Black, which debuted on last week, July 11. Created by Jenji Kohan (Weeds), the dramedy stars Taylor Schilling and is set in a women's prison. As Netflix did with its previous original series, all thirteen one-hour episodes in the series were made available at launch. "Binge-watching" is the term. Anyone watching, or has watched the entire season yet? If so, thoughts? Its key cast includes a number of actresses of African descent, including Danielle Brooks, Samira Wiley, Vicky Jeudy, Lolita...
