Ry Welch was born in Austin, Texas and grew up in Northern Virginia. After graduating South Lakes High School in Reston, Virginia he studied Double Bass at Virginia Commonwealth University and Classical Composition at New England Conservatory in Boston (BM 1994). At NEC his studies included Electronic Music, Film Scoring, Micro-Tonal Music, Turkish Classical Music, Orchestration and 16th Century Counterpoint, and he was a member of the Jazz Ensemble, Conservatory Chorus and Chamber Singers. Studying under Electronic Music pioneer Robert Ceely as well as other contemporary visionaries including Joe Maneri and Ran Blake, and having personal contact with greats including Cecil Taylor, Milton Babbitt, Hariprisad Chaurasia, Elliot Carter and John Cage, Ry opened to the world of sound and structure lying beneath the surfaces of style and genre; a primal language that speaks in infinite voices.
After moving to Los Angeles in 2003, Ry was an assistant to Emmy Winner Sean Callery on Fox's "24", and was the Music Director, Composer and Songwriter for Award-Winning dance company Catch Me Bird (2003-2010), staging large productions at the Wilshire-Ebell, UCLA and the Ford Amphitheatre. Ry has scored feature films, shorts, documentaries and network television, and is an award-winning composer and songwriter for branding and advertising campaigns. He also produces and engineers, working with artists in various genres including HipHop, Rock and Singer/Songwriter.
