One of the great mysteries of American Idol‘s farewell season is its failure to snag Red Bull as a sponsor for its semifinal rounds.
There’s been a “blinked? you missed it!” Usain Bolt-ish pacing to these telecasts, in which a dozen performances and 36 individual critiques — plus some pithy “meet the contestants!” packages — get crammed into approximately 42 minutes of airtime.

Another Dancing with the Stars wedding is on the horizon!
Dance pro Mark Ballas is engaged to girlfriend and bandmate BC Jean (née Brittney Jean Carlson), People has confirmed.
Ballas, 29, originally told the happy news to Access Hollywood, describing how he took inspiration for the romantic proposal – which happened the day before Thanksgiving! – from one of their band's songs, "Roses and Violets."
Ballas said he lined the driveway of their Los Angeles home with roses and violets (which took him "forever" to get since they were out of season), and decorated the inside of the house in a Woodstock theme,...

For American Idol addicts, the Top 24 announcement episode is akin to being a kid on Christmas morning.
Over the last six weeks, we’ve flipped through our J.C. Penney and Sears catalogs — hey, I grew up in the ’70s; that was as close to perusing the Internet as it got! — and picked out what we wanted in our voting rounds: “Ooooh, I gotta have one Sarina-Joi Crowe, a Clark Beckham and definitely the Savion Wright that Santa accidentally left in his workshop last year!”

From the moment she makes her first appearance on Empire, we know Courtney Love’s Elle Dallas is a badass force of nature— mainly because she disrespects Cookie Lyon (to her face!) and doesn’t wind up getting a beat-down with a broom.
But while having 150 million in record sales will still get you all the air kisses you can tolerate, there’s a footnote at the bottom of every major-label record deal of which Elle is acutely aware: Any accomplishments not achieved in the last 12-24 months might just as well never happened at all.

You can’t always get what you want, as Mick Jagger (and later, Crystal Bowersox) once sang, and that adage has certainly been applicable to most of American Idol‘s first 399 episodes.
On Wednesday, however, in celebration of the 400th installment of the reality-competition granddaddy, Uncle Nigel took a page from Burger King’s ad department and produced an episode that let the Idoloonie Nation have it their way: A Top 13 packed almost entirely with solid (and varied) vocalists. Specific, constructive critiques from the judges. A mentor with serious chops, good humor, and spot-on advice. A clear, unmuddied sound mix.

Zap2it has been looking back at the best performances from each stage of the "American Idol" finals and now we're taking a gander at the Top 8. This week on "Idol," the contestants are gearing up for Songs from the Movies as the theme, but what about the past performances at Top 8?
This collection of Top 8 might be the best single phase of the competition yet, even including how unkind the themes of Queen and Latin were on seasons 5 and 6, respectively.
Who are you favorites? Vote below. As of this writing, you've voted Carrie Underwood's "Alone" as the best Top 11 performance, David Cook's "Billie Jean" as the best Top 10 performance and David Archuleta's "Smoky Mountain Memories" as the best Top 9 performance.
Which one will win Top 8? We sense a dogfight coming on between Kelly, Fantasia and Glambert, and that doesn't even account for how great Constantine Maroulis,...

Some things in life are certainties: Steven Tyler’s penchant for profanity. Jennifer Lopez’s ability to add sparkle to just about anything (her eyelids, a pair of mom shorts, the Glinda-like bubble that perpetually surrounds her). And the way that, despite Ryan Seacrest’s best efforts, American Idol‘s “Holding Rooms of Doom” episodes are never really all that suspenseful.
Let’s be honest: Did anyone really think the squalid pen containing Brielle von Hugel, Corey Levoy, and a group of people who might as well have been auditioning for America’s Next Top Sway-bot was going to...

For an American Idol fan like myself, the flurry of staffing shakeups this week at The House That Kelly Clarkson Built have been the emotional equivalent of taking a sledgehammer to an outdated kitchen wall. Yeah, you knew it had to be done — and quickly — but still…with all the dust and destruction and a possible contractor named Nigel who you’re still not entirely sure you trust, it’s hard to know whether to be terrified, excited, or a little of both.
That said, I’m genuinely optimistic about the widely reported rumor (still not officially confirmed by Fox...

Ah, the Idoldome. It's my fourth year recapping the behind-the-scenery at American Idol, and my third inside the double-decker, steel-and-mylar-and-hd-jumboscreens behemoth that is known as the Idoldome. Best I can tell, the set itself hasn't changed much at all since The Season of Kradison -- the only major difference to the studio I caught was the addition of three rows or so to the rear of the audience. Still, the place never fails to impress with its über-blue ridiculousness. It really does usher in a sense of grand occasion and drama to the Idol experience, and after visiting the intimate and easygoing Idolcupola last week,...

Even after Katy Perry's impressive smackdown of Kara DioGuardi on Tuesday night's episode of "American Idol," the best moment of this season's run of audition episodes remains "Pants on the Ground," the hilarious and oft-remixed song delivered last week by General Larry Platt during the stop in Atlanta last week. Since Platt unleashed his original tune, he has received interest from record labels, inspired Brett Favre of the Minnesota Vikings and got a performance spot on "The View."
But is Platt's "original" song all that original? A pair of brothers from Detroit got in touch with a local news station and revealed to them that they cut a track called "Back Pockets on the Ground" that has a similar theme and beat. The twist? They recorded "Back Pockets on the Ground" way back in 1996. Gerald Green, one half of the pair, says they don't harbor any ill will towards Platt,...

For the past 48 hours, I've subsisted on a steady diet of Honey Bunches of Oats, Diet Dr. Pepper, and news and speculation about Paula Abdul. And while I'm planning an item about Paula's five best pop songs for our Music Mix blog later this afternoon, I thought it might be fun for now to look back at some of Paula's wildest, wackiest moments since returning to the spotlight with American Idol in 2002. Check out my six favorites, then head to the comments section and share your own! (And pick up this week's issue of EW for more on Paula's exit.) Melon-Gate: During the season 5 semifinals, Paula's advice to Kevin Covais and Jose "Sway" Penala took a turn for the absurd, ending with this memorable bit of free verse (which she credited to Simon Cowell): "The moth who finds the melon finds the cornflake always finds the melon—and one...
