London, July 30 (Ians) Former England captain Michael Vaughan, who was leading the national side when Stuart Broad began his Test cricket journey in 2007, showered praise on the veteran pacer after his decision to retire following the Ashes series, saying “all young players aspire to achieve what he has accomplished for the national side.”
Broad stunned the cricket world at the end of Day 3 of the final Ashes Test at The Oval on Saturday, when he announced his decision to call time on his 17-year long career at the conclusion of the ongoing series against Australia.
The 37-year-old has claimed 602 wickets in 167 Tests, making him the second most successful pacer in Test history behind team-mate James Anderson.
Broad, who made his Test debut against Sri Lanka in 2007, sits fifth on the all-time list of wicket-takers, and is one of only two fast bowlers to take over 600 wickets, alongside long-time bowling partner James Anderson.

London, June 29 (Ians) Australia were dealt with a major injury scare on Thursday when premier off-spinner Nathan Lyon limped off the field while fielding during day two of the second Ashes Test against England at Lord’s.
Lyon, who is playing in his 100th consecutive Test, was running in to take a catch of Ben Duckett off the bowling of Cameron Green in the leg-side after tea, when he pulled up sharply while running towards the ball.
The injury looked so serious that Lyon had to go off the field by taking the support of a member of the Australian team medical staff and shook off in pain while clutching the calf region of his right leg.
A statement from Cricket Australia confirmed Lyon has suffered a right calf injury and would be further assessed after the close of day’s two play. “A further update, if available, will be shared in the morning,...

London, June 28 (Ians) Former fast bowler Glenn McGrath believes that if Australia win the second Test at Lord’s then Ashes 2023 will be ‘done and dusted’ as it will be very difficult for England to make a comeback into the series.
The Pat Cummins led Australia won the first match by two wickets after a gripping five-day encounter at Edgbaston to take a vital 1-0 lead in the five-match series.
The second Ashes Test starts on Wednesday at Lord’s.
“The last time a team came from behind to win the Ashes was in 2005, a series I was right in the thick of. New Delhi, June 13 (Ians) Australian fast bowling great Brett Lee has expressed his backing for Scott Boland to feature in the upcoming Ashes Test opener against England, starting on June 16 at Edgbaston.
Boland, Boland was selected in the Wtc Final playing XI over Michael Neser with Josh Hazlewood unavailable due to injury, played a key role in Australia bowling out India for 234 on Day Five of the marquee clash, including the double scalp of Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja in the second innings to set the base for a 209-run victory.
While the Australian batting lineup is firmly established, there is still uncertainty surrounding the composition of the bowling attack.
It certainly will be a selection headache for Australia when they pick their bowling attack for the first Ashes Test with Hazlewood now fit and available for selection.

Tendulkar won the World Cup, innumerable Man of the Match and Series awards, scored the first-ever Odi double ton, made the highest number of centuries, the highest number of runs, most caps for the country… he did it all but his critics, which are very less in numbers, also keep reminding fans about his failures on big days.
No doubt, Sachin carried the burden of pressure and expectations of Indian cricket fans throughout his career but he also failed on a few days, when the country wanted him to lead from the front with the bat and win it for Team India.
One such day was March 23, 2003, when India played an intimidating Australia in the Icc World Cup Final in Johannesburg. The Sourav Ganguly-led Indian cricket team was on a roll in that World Cup in South Africa, where they reached the final with just one defeat in the tournament.

New Delhi, Feb 21 (Ians) With the Australian batters failing miserably in the first two Tests of the four-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy series, former opener Matthew Hayden has offered to help the tourists solve their batting woes in Indi.
Hayden, who was the Pakistan cricket team’s mentor for the 2022 Men’s T20 World Cup, is in India as a commentator for official broadcaster Star Sports and has no formal involvement with the touring side.
However, on Tuesday he told the Sydney Morning Herald that he is 100 per cent ready to help the Australian batters who have produced scores of 177, 91 and 262 and 113 in four innings in India so far with Usman Khawa’a being the only Australian batter to score a half-century so far.

Mount Maunganui (New Zealand), Feb 19 (Ians) England seamer Stuart Broad has said that teammate James Anderson is probably the reason he is still going at the age of 36.
On Saturday, in the final session of the first Test between England and New Zealand, when Broad clean-bowled Devon Conway, it was a record-breaking 1002nd Test scalp as teammates for Broad and Anderson as the duo surpassed the mark 1,001 wickets achieved by Australia’s Glenn McGrath and Shane Warne.
The record-breaking moment came almost 15 years on from when the pair first played together in a Test in New Zealand in 2008, at Wellington in the second game of a three-match series that England won 2-1.
“It’s a special country for us, New Zealand. Back in 2008 at Wellington we came into the team together. And to go past two heroes of mine growing up in McGrath and Warne, certainly we’re not in...

Evergreen duo James Anderson and Stuart Broad, who created history on Saturday when they overtook Australia greats Shane Warne and Glenn McGrath to become the teammates with the most wickets in Test history, were at it again to wrap up the Test triumph for England in style.
On Sunday, Anderson collected two wickets in as many balls to send Scott Kuggeleijn and Tim Southee packing early in the session, while the veteran finished the job when he returned to the attack to dismiss Blair Tickner and end the match.

Mount Maunganui (New Zealand), Feb 18 (Ians) England were cruising towards victory in the first Test at Bay Oval here, having reduced New Zealand to 63/5 in their second innings after hammering 374 runs in 74 overs on second calling to set the hosts a target of 394 for victory.
England, who had a small lead of 19 runs on basis of the first innings, scored runs at a frantic pace on the third day of the Day-Night Test.
Joe Root (57), Harry Brook (54), and Ben Foakes (51) struck half-centuries while Ollie Pope blasted 49, skipper Ben Stokes scored 33-ball 31 and Ollie Robinson contributed 39 runs as England left the hosts’ bowlers shell-shocked by their Bazball tactics, continuing to play attacking shots despite losing wickets at regular intervals.
Pacer Stuart Broad then claimed four wickets for 21 runs as England reduced the hosts to 63/5, setting themselves up on course for a big win.

New Delhi, Feb 4 (Ians) Former Australia cricketer Geoff Lawson revealed that current head coach Andrew McDonald’s viewpoint of the side’s success in the upcoming four-match Test series against India is broadly based around the quality of fast bowling rather than the temptation to fight spin with spin in the subcontinental conditions.
India are the current holder of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, having won the last three series against Australia in 2017, 2018-19, and 2020-21. Australia, on the other hand, are aiming to win a Test series in India, starting from February 9 in Nagpur, after having done so last time in 2004.
“I caught up with Australian coach Andrew McDonald in a recreational setting last week, but we naturally talked a bit of cricket. His broad view of Australia’s potential success in the next four Test matches was based around the quality of his fast bowling rather than the temptation to fight spin with spin.

Johannesburg, Jan 27 (Ians) Proteas batting legend Ab de Villiers believes that just like the Indian Premier League (Ipl) elevated his game to the next level, the SA20 will do so for young South African players.
De Villiers was just 24 years old when he played in the inaugural Ipl and was still finding his feet at the international level. But after sharing a dressing room with the likes of Glenn McGrath, Daniel Vettori, Shoaib Malik and Virender Sehwag at the Delhi Daredevils, De Villiers was transformed from a precocious talent to a global superstar in the years to come.
Now in his first stint as a television commentator for SuperSport at the SA20, De Villiers is seeing first-hand the amount of young local talent South African cricket has to offer.
He has picked young Sunrisers Eastern Cape opener Jordan Hermann as the opening batter to watch.

Melbourne, Jan 18 (Ians) As Australia gear up for a Test tour of India in February-March, on the back of their minds is the upcoming Ashes Series against archrivals England. Former pace legend Glenn McGrath has warned Australia that Ben Stokes’ England will be ‘tough to beat at home this summer.
Australia have won two of the last three Ashes series; thumping England 4-0 at home in 2017 and 2021 and drawing 2-2 in England in-between those two emphatic victories.
But having done superbly in Test matches recently, England will attempt to win back the Ashes when Australia visit these shores for a five-match Test series in June and July.
Under Stokes and former New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum, England have secured impressive victories over New Zealand, South Africa, Pakistan and India, winning nine of their last 10 Test matches, prompting McGrath to claim that they will present a threat to Australia in the Ashes.

Sydney, Jan 1 (Ians) The Australian and South African Men’s cricket teams on Sunday attended the annual New Year’s Day Reception co-hosted by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Jodie Haydon at Kirribilli House in Sydney.
The event was held ahead of the third and final Test Match between Australia and South Africa at the Sydney Cricket Ground, starting on January 4. After a two-year hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the afternoon tea is an annual tradition for the Prime Minister to host the Australian Men’s cricket team and their touring opponent at Kirribilli House on New Year’s Day.
Australia leads the Test series 2-0 after sealing the series at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Both teams will be looking to advance their chances of qualifying for the Icc World Test Championship (Wtc) in the final match of the series at Sydney, which will also be the host for the annual Pink Test.

Perth, Dec 4 (Ians) Former Australian quick Damien Fleming has rated Test skipper and pace spearhead Pat Cummins among the top-three he has seen emerging from his country. The 29-year-old Cummins grabbed his 200th wicket on Friday in his 44th Test when he ripped West Indies batter Kraigg Brathwaite’s off stump.
Cummins thus became the second-fastest Australian to the milestone behind the legendary Dennis Lillee, who achieved the feat in 38 Tests. Cummins’s average after the West Indies’ first innings in the inaugural Test at Perth of 21.50 is the best by any Australian bowler to have taken 200 or more scalps.
However, Cummins has been laid low by right quadricep soreness in the second innings, which has forced the team management to hand over the captaincy reins to Steve Smith. Cummins had figures of 3/34 in 20.2 overs in the first innings.

Melbourne, Nov 26 (Ians) Former Australian pace bowler Glenn McGrath is firm that Test and Odi skipper Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc should remain the national team’s quicks in all three formats of the game, but has advised that they be given longer breaks to recover.
McGrath also praised Cummins for deciding to skip the next season of the Indian Premier League (Ipl), and added that proper rest was a must to be built into the pace bowlers’ schedules.
The below-par performance of the trio in the Icc T20 World Cup at home has raised questions on whether they should be persisted in all formats or Cricket Australia (CA) should look to the future with the 2024 T20 World Cup in mind.
However, McGrath feels the players have adapted to the scenario of playing all three formats.
“The bowlers have adapted,” McGrath was quoted as saying by the West Australian.

Sydney, Nov 16 (Ians) With England winning the T20 World Cup to add to the Odi World Cup title they already possess, many teams want to emulate their aggressive and fearless style of play and succeed in white-ball cricket.
England’s playing style has become so much in demand that the legendary cricketer Glenn McGrath wants the current Australian team to take a leaf out of their archrivals’ playbook and follow the same way.
While England romped to victory beating Pakistan by 10 wickets in Melbourne, Australia failed to defend their title and failed to survive the Super 12 stage.
McGrath said the current Australian team should also play fearless cricket, just as its predecessors.
“The Australian team always played fearless cricket. I wonder now if they are playing with more fear of losing. You just have to go out and back yourselves. That is the brand of cricket England are playing at the moment.

London, Oct 9 (Ians) One of England’s most successful pace bowlers Stuart Broad will not travel to Pakistan for the historic three-Test series in the sub-continent as he and his partner are expecting a child in mid-November, said a report in Daily Mail on Sunday.
The 36-year-old, the second-highest Test wicket-taking pace bowler after country-mate James Anderson, has reportedly informed the selectors about his unavailability due to personal reasons.
The report added that England’s training camp in Abu Dhabi ahead of the Pakistan tour will clash with the baby’s due date, because of which Broad has been forced to miss the tour.
England and England Lions will also play a match during the warm-up period in Abu Dhabi and Broad missing it would mean he would not be match-ready for the series, which will be hosted in Rawalpindi, Multan and Karachi from December 1.

London, Sep 19 (Ians) The England and Wales Cricket Board (Ecb) is reportedly devising a plan where England pace-bowling stalwarts James Anderson and Stuart Broad could be made player-coaches, even as the country’s cricket governing body looks to prune the backroom staff.
Anderson, 40, and Broad, 36, are the most experienced England bowlers and are the highest wicket-taking pacers in the world. Given their decades of experience, the Ecb is exploring the possibility of giving the duo a new role, said a report in Daily Mail on Monday.
The report said Test coach Brendon McCullum is looking at the long term and wants to utilise the expertise of the veteran bowlers to permanently replace the outgoing Jon Lewis.

London, Sep 18 (Ians) England pace-bowling stalwart Stuart Broad has said it feels great becoming the second-most successful Test fast bowler in the world behind team-mate James Anderson, adding that it was an “honour” to go beyond the legendary Australian quick Glenn McGrath.
Broad, 36, surpassed McGrath’s tally of 563 Test wickets in the recently concluded Oval match against South Africa and is currently on 566. He now trails his partner Anderson in the wickets column for pacers, who has 667 wickets to his name.
“It was also an honour to go beyond Glenn McGrath’s career Test wicket tally on our final bowling day of the summer (in the third Test at The Oval against South Africa). McGrath was a hero of mine, someone I imitated in the garden, and the reason I wanted to become a bowler,” said Broad in hic column for the Daily Mail.

London, Sep 18 (Ians) England pace bowler Stuart Broad was devastated following his exclusion from the squad for the away Test series against West Indies earlier this year, but him returning to the side and becoming a part of Brendon McCullum’s all-conquering side has made things “memorable” for the 36-year-old stalwart.
Broad and pace-bowling partner James Anderson, two of the most experienced bowlers in Test history, were dropped from the touring party to the Caribbean under then skipper Joe Root, following the morale-shattering 0-4 loss in the Ashes Down Under. The side still lost the series 0-1, leading the England and Wales Cricket Board (Ecb) to make extensive changes in the Test structure.

London, Sep 12 (Ians) Former England skipper Nasser Hussain wants the England and Wales Cricket Board (Ecb) to keep James Anderson in their scheme of things when the side travels to Pakistan for a three-Test series early December.
Anderson, the most successful pace bowler in the world with 667 wickets, has played a huge role in England’s series victory against New Zealand, the rescheduled fifth Test against India and the three-Test series against South Africa, which the hosts are poised to win at The Oval on Monday.
Anderson, 40, along with pace compatriot Stuart Broad, was dropped from England’s touring side to the West Indies earlier this year, following a forgettable Ashes tour for Joe Root’s side. Anderson’s career looked shaky but following a change of guard in the Ecb, and with new coach Brendon McCullum and skipper Ben Stokes at the helm, the pace-bowling stalwart was back in the side and doing wonders.

Manchester, Aug 28 (Ians) England pace bowler James Anderson has said retirement from cricket was the last thing on his mind, given that he still has the urge to go on at the age of 40 and wants to “keep doing” what he does best.
On Saturday, Anderson added another feather to his cap, picking up the wicket of South Africa’s Simon Harmer to go past Australian great Glenn McGrath as the fast bowler with most wickets at the international level. It was Anderson’s 950th international wicket, a tally he would go on to better by one at the end of the day to help England seal an innings win against the Proteas in the second Test at Old Trafford.
Anderson is five wickets away from matching India’s Anil Kumble’s tally and will then have only Shane Warne and Muttiah Muralitharan ahead of him, both of whom have over 1000 scalps.

Manchester, Aug 27 (Ians) England registered a comprehensive victory by an innings and 85 runs over South Africa in the second Test inside three days to draw level in the three-match series 1-1 and pull visitors down from the top of the Icc World Test Championship standings, here on Saturday.
South Africa had affirmed their position at the top of the Wtc table after their win at Lord’s, but an innings defeat here has reduced their win percentage to 66.67 percent, below that of Australia’s 70 percent.
Sri Lanka are third with 53.33 percent, but South Africa will hope to seal a win in the next Test to ensure they are on course to reach the Icc World Test Championship final next year in England.

New Delhi, Nov 25 (Ians) The historic India-Australia Kolkata Test of the 2000-01 series was Shyam Kumar Bansal's last of his six-Test career as an umpire, and it turned out to be a see-saw battle that has gone down as one of the best Tests ever played. Bansal fondly remembers the backfoot drives of Vvs Laxman, who scored a momentous 281, Rahul Dravid's 180, and off-spinner Harbhajan Singh's hat-trick vividly, even at the age of 80.
Almost 20 years after officiating in the match in front of a packed Eden Gardens, Bansal also recalled the jeers he received when he turned down an appeal from the Indians against Aussie tailender Jason Gillespie towards the end of the first day's play. Gillespie and captain Steve Waugh ended up sharing a 133-run record stand for the ninth wicket that helped the visiting team pile up 445 in their first innings.
