SAG-AFTRA has been on strike since July 14, 2023 after the AMPTP failed to meet their reasonable terms for a new contract. Those terms included many things like protections against studios using AI to recreate performers’ likeness in perpetuity, fees for late payments made by the studios, and increase in penalties for productions not allowing adequate meal breaks or rest periods while on set. While all of these things are important and necessary for the union to continue fighting for, one of the issues that union members have been most vocal about is the need to update the residual payment process in the streaming era.
Actors from Sean Gunn to Mandy Moore have shared the pennies in payments they’ve received in streaming residuals from their major roles in popular shows like Gilmore Girls and This is Us. Aaron Paul is the latest to make headlines for how little he’s made in residuals,...

Meredith Stiehm will seek a second two-year term as president of WGA West in the fall election, and the other top officials of the guild will also seek reelection.
Justine Bateman, the writer-director and former “Family Ties” star, is running for a spot on the WGA West board. Bateman has become outspoken on the need for tight regulation of artificial intelligence.
The guild announced its preliminary list of nominees on Wednesday. Stiehm, who has been active in both the agency campaign and the current strike, will run against challenger Rich Talarico, a “Key and Peele” writer who has faulted the guild for not doing more to fight back against the release of free clips of the show on YouTube.
Michele Mulroney is running for reelection as vice president, and Betsy Thomas is seeking another term as secretary-treasurer. They will run against Isaac Gomez and Jeffrey Thompson, respectively.

Last summer, Van Robichaux ran for the board of directors of the Writers Guild of America West. Out of 17 candidates, he was the only one who raised a concern about artificial intelligence in his campaign statement.
“As far as I know, this issue is not on the radar of anyone else running for the board and while I might sound like a paranoid lunatic talking about it today, in 10 years I’m confident you’ll be glad I brought it up now,” he wrote.
He did not win.
AI has since become the hottest topic in the creative economy, spurred by the release of models like Stable Diffusion last August and ChatGPT in November. Across disciplines – graphic design, animation, acting, music, writing – artists are terrified of being replaced by robots.
“I think they’re right to be concerned,” said Bruce Schneier, a lecturer in cybersecurity at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government.

Next year’s contract talks and a possible writers strike are looming large over the WGA West’s ongoing board election, in which 17 candidates are vying for eight open seats. The WGA’s current contract doesn’t expire until May 1, but in their campaign statements, many of the candidates are making it clear that they’re prepared to strike if the guild can’t get a fair deal at the bargaining table.
And there’s considerable pent-up demand for major gains, in no small part because in 2020, when the WGA’s previous contract was set to expire, contractual advances the guild had hoped to make became all but impossible to achieve because the threat of a strike was all but off the table as the industry was already shut down by the first wave of the Covid pandemic.

2017 should hopefully have some terrific comedies. Fist Fight, starring Ice Cube and Charlie Day, is not one of them.
At one point during Fist Fight, the new comedy starring Ice Cube and Charlie Day, I could only think of Step Brothers, an inverted Bugsy Malone that casts adults as childish characters and stands up as Adam McKay's masterpiece. Although there's plenty of comic mileage in adults acting like kids, Fist Fight is sadly not a patch on those farcical heights.
The film takes place at Roosevelt High School, an inner city school where budget cuts have left the entire faculty fearing for their jobs, and also fearing the students' designated Senior Pranks Day on the last day of term. As English teacher Mr. Campbell (Day) observes, the pranks don't really seem like pranks - mostly, they involve criminal damage and horse-kidnapping.

The premise to Richie Keen’s Fist Fight is simple, to a point where it’s hard to fathom quite how it’s sustained a feature length narrative. It’s, quite literally, about two men having a fight, and in the most contrived way imaginable that is stretched out across 90 painfully unfunny minutes, with the one paramount, lone joke being that of teachers acting more immaturely than the students they educate. And believe me, it gets tedious pretty quickly.
Charlie Day plays Andy Campbell, a beleaguered high school teacher who remains perpetually bemused, and almost impressed, with the sheer level of irresponsibility in the pranks pulled by his students. Fearing his job may be on the line, and with a pregnant wife at home, life is somewhat stressful – and it’s made even more so when he finds himself in the principle’s office next to the...

Charlie Day owns one of the highest-pitched male squeaks in the business and he puts it to hilarious use on It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. I could watch him in anything – but Fist Fight is pushing it, given that's it's always raining a storm of comic clichés that quickly drowns any semblance of audience goodwill.
Day plays Mr. Campbell, a dweeb English teacher at Atlanta's Roosevelt High where it's senior prank day and our man is getting rattled. Forget the meth-drugged horse running through the halls or the dick images...

Chicago – “Fist Fight” is such a thin premise it can’t even sustain its own two minute trailer, much less a feature length film. That premise, what there is of it, is simple – English teacher (Charlie Day) and History Teacher (Ice Cube) get involved in an altercation with a student on the last day of class, at a failing high school known for senior pranks.
Teacher Ice Cube gets fired, and blames Charlie Day. So they act like children and settle their differences with a fist fight outside.
Rating: 0.0/5.0
And that’s it. The entire running time is spent with Ice Cube glowering, and Charlie Day sputtering about trying to avoid the impending beatdown. There have been a lot of crappy studio comedies over the past few years, but this one stands out as something you can imagine even Adam Sandler turning down because of its shoddiness.
The film has no basis in reality,...

New York City’s harsh streets may have jaded this innocent critic, but a sense of humor still flickers on. I swear it. My laughter during Bob’s Burgers is disruptive to anyone in a 100-yard radius. So why have mainstream comedies been leaving me empty and numb? Fist Fight hits upon everything that should tickle my pop-culture funnybone. Ice Cube references pepper this gangster vs. Charlie Day rumble – something I’d pay top dollar for – yet the film itself lands soft, unflinching blows. Dick jokes and obscenities merely strive for passing marks, while the film’s curriculum couldn’t be more by-the-books. Are we sure this screenplay wasn’t scribbled down during a boring lecture?

It’s hard to believe that It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia has been on the air for twelve years now, but it’s still going strong. While the show opened doors for the entire quartet of relative unknowns, Charlie Day has been the one who’s leveraged his rising star into a pretty prolific film career, generally as the confused, manic comic relief. He fills that role on the show too, albeit at a level of imbecilic illiteracy that’s hard to fathom without watching yourself. But in 2015, ten years after the comedy’s debut, a different side of Charlie was shown. The episode was “Charlie Work” and it allowed Day to flip that energy into no-nonsense frustration and uncharacteristic productivity. He was confident, assertive, and coherent—and funnier as a result.
I wonder if it was fate then that Day would sign onto Fist Fight four months after...

High school, the best years of your life – at least, that’s what nostalgic adults would have you believe, as they look back on their days in education through rose-tinted glasses. But in New Line’s imminent comedy Fist Fight, high school is transformed into a gladiatorial arena in which Charlie Day and Ice Cube lock horns.
Pegged for release on February 17th, New Line has today unleashed the bonkers red band trailer for Richie Keen’s (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) caper, which sees a seemingly innocuous rivalry bubble over into a full-blown war. Let me just admit, right here at the start, that I loved Wedding Crashers when it came out in July of 2005. When I saw it, I'd just gone through a terrible breakup, and that summer was a rough one. A buddy of mine suggested we catch Wedding Crashers cause he figured I could use a good laugh. So three of us went and catch it at the College Point Multiplex in Queens...and we laughed. We laughed A Lot.
It was one of those great moviegoing experiences where you and your pals are laughing so hard that you have to try and shush each other because you're missing parts of the movie from laughing so much.
In short, it was just what I needed.
I picked it up on DVD when it came out later that year, and- to this day- I'll always had a soft spot for Wedding Crashers.

Deadpool director Tim Miller recently dropped out of the sequel because of some creative differences with Ryan Reynolds and the studio. If the rumored reasons behind the departure are true, it's probably for the best.
Miller has already jumped on board a film project called Influx, which is an adaptation of the David Suarez novel, and it's expected to end up being a film trilogy. According to Variety, he's also joined the production team of Sony Pictures live-action CG hybrid adaptation of the classic Sega video game Sonic the Hedgehog.
He will be a producer on the film and help out Blur Studio’s Jeff Fowler, who is attached to direct and oversee the development of the project. They will also work with Neal H. Moritz, who is the producer of the Fast and Furious franchise. Miller had this to say in a statement:
“Jeff is an incredible director with strong story instincts.

Ice Cube has a bone to pick with Charlie Day in the new comedy “Fist Fight.” When wimpy English teacher Andy Campbell (Day) gets his feared colleague Ron Strickland (Cube) fired, Strickland challenges him to an old-fashioned throw down in the parking lot after school. Warner Bros. released the first trailer and new poster for the film, which you can check out below.
Directed by Richie Keen (who’s making his feature directorial debut), and written by Evan Susser and Van Robichaux, the trailer shows as the news of the fight spreads and how Campbell enlists the help of his school buddies to help him prepare for the brawl.

Last year, it was announced that Sonic the Hedgehog would be getting the feature film treatment. Sega is teaming up with Sony Pictures to bring it to the big screen. We learned at the time that the film would help be developed by Sega's CG animation film company, so I just assumed that it would be a full CG animated film, which would have been great!
Unfortunately, in this latest update by Sega CEO Hajime Satomi, we learn that the film is going to be a live-action-animation hybrid film, which isn't appealing at all. These CG animated and live-action hybrid films never work, and it breaks my heart that this is the direction Sony and Sega are taking the production. Back in 2014 came word that Sony Pictures Entertainment and Sega Sammy Group's Marza Animation Planet were teaming up to develop "Sonic the Hedgehog," a live-action and animation hybrid cinematic feature based on the iconic video game franchise.
Nothing much has been heard since, but Sega CEO Hajime Satomi revealed to Worldfolio (via io9) this week that the project is still on the way and is being fast-tracked for a 2018 release.
The film aims to capture Sonic's irreverent tone and will incorporate iconic characters from the franchise including the evil Dr. Eggman. Evan Susser and Van Robichaux are penning this feature which is being produced by Neal H. Moritz, Takeshi Ito and Mie Onishi.
The "Sonic" franchise has sold over 140 million games and the character previously headlined several animated series.

On the last day of the year, mild-mannered high school English teacher Andy Campbell (Charlie Day) is trying his best to keep it together amidst senior pranks, a dysfunctional administration and budget cuts that put jobs on the line. But things go from bad to worse when he accidentally crosses his much tougher and deeply feared colleague, Ron Strickland (Ice Cube), who challenges Campbell to an old-fashioned throwdown after school. News of the fight spreads like wildfire and ends up becoming the very thing this school, and Campbell, needed.

According to TheWrap, Tracy Morgan is negotiating his first movie following last year's tragic car crash. Morgan is reportedly angling to mount his film comeback alongside Ice Cube and It's Always Sunny's Charlie Day in a Richie Keen comedy called Fist Fight. Evan Susser and Van Robichaux have written the script, which follows two high school teachers (Day and Cube) who will likely do exactly what the title implies; Variety adds that Morgan will play a coach at the school. Production is slated to begin this month in Atlanta. The last film Morgan appeared in was Chris Rock's Top Five, in which he played a character in Rock's inner circle. Since his recovery from the collision, Morgan has enjoyed a successful and well-supported turnaround this summer, giving his first interview in June, and making an emotional (and hilarious) industry return at last night's Emmys. You'll next see him...

We've been hearing about a Jetsons movie for quite some time. Back in 2012, Kanye West said that he was asked to be a creative consultant on the film, and then reiterated this allegation in 2013. At long last, though, Warner Bros. is moving forward with a new feature on the Hanna-Barbera property, but it doesn't look like West will be involved. Not only that, but it won.t be live action! As reported by Deadline, plans for a live-action Jetsons movie fizzled out somewhere along the way, and Warner Bros. now plans to bring its family from the future to the silver screen through animation. This comes as a major turn of events, as it was in 2009 that Machete Kills director Robert Rodriguez first said he was busy working on the script for a live-action version with the hope of shooting it in 2010. Obviously, that didn.t happen, but Van Robichaux...

Sony Pictures Entertainment announced this week that they will be joining forces with Japanese studio Marza Animation Planet to produce a new CGI/live-action Sonic the Hedgehog film based on the famous mascot.
First launched as the original companion game for Sega Genesis in 1991, the character quickly became the mascot for Sega, going on to solidify the company as a leading console developer throughout the 16-bit era of the early 1990s. The character has become the face of a $1 billion franchise and has spread to other mediums that include the long-running comic book series first launched in 1992 as well as multiple animated television series.
“There are limitless stories to tell with a character like Sonic the Hedgehog, and a built-in international fan base. Video game movies have a bad reputation, but that's not stopping Sony from turning to an old classic for fresh inspiration. As we near the 23rd anniversary of the release of Sega's Sonic The Hedgehog, plans have been announced to turn this video game into a flashy movie. The Wrap reports Sony Pictures Entertainment and Marza Animation Planet have joined forces to adapt the Sonic The Hedgehog video game into a a hybrid CG-animated/live-action feature film. Following the continued success of video game movies, Sony is working hard to get a "Sonic the Hedgehog" franchise hurtling into theaters. Sony and Sega Sammy Group are hooking up to make "a hybrid/live action and CG-animated feature film" of the classic. Just try and picture an animated Sonic rolling through the streets of, say, New York City while he's trying to outwit the nasty Dr. Eggman on the big screen.
Deadline reports that the companies are hoping to release one "Sonic" movie a year, and with the game's history and popularity, that's pretty feasible. It was only a matter of time before it happened, but Sony Pictures Animation is developing a feature film adaptation of Sega's hit video game Sonic the Hedgehog!
I grew up on this game, and I freakin' loved the little hedgehog speed demon. Producer Neal H. Moritz has teamed up with Sega's CG animation film company, Marza Animation Planet, to help bring it to life.
The script for the movie will be written by Evan Susser and Van Robichaux. There's no information on the story that they will tell, but the game centers on the world’s fastest hedgehog, whose peaceful life is often interrupted by his arch nemesis, Doctor Eggman.
The project is being overseen by Hannah Minghella for the studio, and this is what she had to say in a statement:
