Fiend Without a Face, the surf punk/psychobilly side-project of Mastodon guitarist-singer Brent Hinds, are hitting the road for their first tour dates since 2016.
The Fall 2023 US trek kicks off Tuesday (September 26th) in Atlanta and routes across the South, wrapping up October 8th in San Antonio, Texas. Dirty B and The Boys will provide support. Pick up tickets to select dates via StubHub, where your purchase is 100% guaranteed through StubHub’s Fan Protect program.
Fiend Without a Face have origins that pre-date the formation of Mastodon. Their self-titled debut album was released on CD via the ShutEye imprint in 1998 (and subsequently reissued on vinyl by Volcom in 2012), and the single “Black Grass” was released in 2001. Eventually, Hinds enlisted Mastodon bandmate Brann Dailor on drums for another self-titled effort in 2017 — considered the proper debut album from the project.

Mastodon guitarist Bill Kelliher has revealed that the band will be writing a new album next year. He also opened up about the current financial challenges of touring that face his and other bands.
Speaking at the Guitar Summit in Mannheim, Germany, Kelliher was asked about the band’s future plans for touring and writing the follow-up to its 2021 double-album Hushed and Grim. Mastodon recently wrapped up a tour with Gojira and are next slated to play Lamb of God’s Headbangers Boat cruise before embarking on a South American tour with Gojira in November.
“Hopefully when that’s over, December and in the beginning of next year, we can start sitting down and actually riffing out and writing a new record,” Kelliher said [as transcribed by Blabbermouth]. “Because it’s already time to — it’s past time to write a new record, even though Hushed and Grim was a double album, and I...

Baltimore hardcore act Angel Du$t have returned with a new double single “Very Aggressive” / “Love Slam” — their first new music since 2021.
With lead singer Justice Tripp as the centerpiece, Angel Du$t have functioned as a Baltimore hardcore collective of sorts. Most notably, Turnstile’s Daniel Fang, Pat McCrory, and Brendan Yates have been members of the band. On the new songs, Fang shares drums/percussion duties with Thomas Cantwell alongside Daniel Star on guitar, Steve Marino on bass, and Tripp on guitar/vocals.
The single’s A-side, “Very Aggressive,” features guest vocals from Citizen’s Mat Kerekes and is somewhat misleading in nomenclature. While the breakneck tempo, chugging bass line, and Wipers-esque chord voicing are rooted in the more aggro field of punk, Tripp’s knack for melody shines through in the arrangement and anthemic quality of the track, which verges on garage-y power pop.

Ghost have announced a new five-song covers EP titled Phantomime, featuring renditions of songs by Genesis, Iron Maiden, Tina Turner, Television, and The Stranglers. Just in time for Easter Sunday (April 9th), the Swedish metal band has unveiled its cover of Genesis’ “Jesus He Knows Me.”
Genesis’ original 1992 version of the song was a satirical look at televangelists, a subject matter right up Ghost’s alley. In addition to “Jesus He Knows Me,” the EP includes Papa Emeritus IV and company covering Television’s “See No Evil,” The Stranglers’ “Hanging Around,” Iron Maiden’s “Phantom of the Opera,” and Tina Turner’s “We Don’t Need Another Hero (Thunderdome).” The EP is due out on May 18th.
Accompanying the music video for “Jesus He Knows Me” is a half-hour radio call-in show titled “Jesus Talk” hosted by “Father Jim DeFroque.

Mastodon guitarist Bill Kelliher is big fan of Turnstile, so much so that the hardcore group is even influencing his songwriting work on his band’s next album.
In a new interview with Guitar.com, Kelliher gushed about Turnstile, saying that they’re “bringing back all the cool things” that remind him of the bands he listened to back in the day.
“The stuff I’m working on is the sort of stuff that comes out swinging, you know? I’ve been listening to a lot of Turnstile, and their last record, Glow On, to me, is fucking great,” Kelliher said. “I just love their guitars, and their production of it sounds great. Their songwriting is really good. It reminds me of Bad Brains, but if they were more modern, with some Jane’s Addiction mixed in.”
When asked if the Turnstile album has “reinvigorated” his songwriting, he responded, “In a way,...

During the past year, the virtual jam — wherein a group of artists each claim their own corner of a 16:9 YouTube screen to rock out in isolation, together — has become as ubiquitous as Zoom conference calls, online schooling, and any other pandemic-era activity. Pearl Jam did it for Covid relief. The Rolling Stones did it for Global Citizen. Metallica did it very quietly. But few virtual jams have been as relentlessly creative and consistently surprising — not to mention flat-out awesome — as the ones featured in metal-themed talk show Two Minutes...

Mastodon’s Brann Dailor and Baroness’ Sebastian Thomson linked up for a Halloween-appropriate quarantine cover of Ozzy Osbourne’s 1981 track “Over the Mountain.”
Dailor — hamming it up for the camera in a long black wig and an “Ozzy for President” T-shirt, flanked by a pair of fake skeletons — sings lead on the heavy track, with Thomson on drums. They’re joined by Darkest Hour’s Mike Schleibaum (guitar), Kvelertak’s Marvin Nygaard (bass) and Jordan “Gwarsenio Hall” Olds, host of the “Two Minutes to Late Night” series (guitar).

A group of heavy music stars — including members of Primus, Mastodon, Tool and Coheed and Cambria — linked up to record a lockdown rendition of Rush’s 1975 tune “Anthem.”
The lineup features Primus bassist Les Claypool, Mastodon guitarist Bill Kelliher, Tool drummer Danny Carey, Coheed and Cambria frontman Claudio Sanchez and guitarist Stephen Brodsky (Mutoid Man, Cave In).
A quarantine-style video, recorded for Gwarsenio Hall’s “Two Minutes to Late Night” series, utilizes a split-screen format, with each of the members tracking their parts at home. The virtuosity is intense, including...

Mastodon rocker Bill Kelliher fell asleep while filming his cameo for 'Game of Thrones'. The guitarist has revealed he was so exhausted that he dozed off after being told to ''play dead'' when he and his bandmates Brent Hinds, Troy Sanders, Brann Dailor and Eric Saner filmed their guest slot for the HBO medieval fantasy drama. He said: ''There was a lot of playing dead which contrary to popular belief is not that easy to do. I actually fell asleep, laying down on the ground with my battle axe by the water because I was so jet-lagged.'' Bill spoke about how he and...

The Gap has really gotten into ‘80s metal lately, particularly of the leather-clad Rob Halford variety. Unfortunately for Judas Priest, Gap isn’t so into acknowledging where a T-shirt’s image came from or who designed it: As Metal Injection recently pointed out—after it was brought to the Internet's attention by Mastodon guitarist Bill Kelliher—the store is currently selling a boy’s T-shirt for $7.99 that seems to rip off the art from Judas Priest’s Screaming For Vengeance. So far no one from the Priest camp or Team Gap has commented on the similarities, but ...

Last week we reported about the unlikely fan friendship between the metalheads of Mastodon and singer-songwriter Feist. The Mastodon crew were smitten with Feist after seeing her perform just two songs on UK talk show "Later with Jools Holland" before they took the stage themselves, and after she heard they were planning to cover one of her songs, she decided to do the same with one of theirs in honor of Record Store Day, which goes down tomorrow (April 21).
Each gave the other complete creative freedom with their respective covers. Feist chose to record a rendition of "Black Tongue" from Mastodon’s latest effort The Hunter and the band took on Feist’s "A Commotion."
"It's a wet dream to have Mastodon take one of my songs and put it into their massive machine," Feist said of the mutual cover lovefest. Meanwhile, Mastodon guitarist Bill Kelliher told Rolling Stone, "We...

Brent Hinds, frontman and lead guitarist for Mastodon, has reached the inevitable point in the evening when his speech starts to slur. A few hours back, during a listening session for his Atlanta metal band’s epic new album, Crack the Skye, he polished off at least six Budweiser tallboys; here at a clubby midtown Manhattan steakhouse, where his tribal forehead tattoo and reddish lumberjack’s beard are comically out of place, he’s deep into a procession of Jack-and-gingers. He’s cracking some increasingly nasty but harmless jokes about...
