Abby Elliott has come a long way since her "Saturday Night Live" days. Since leaving the sketch comedy series in 2012, Abby has landed the sitcoms "Odd Mom Out" and "Indebted," as well as films like "Sex Ed" and "Better Off Single." Currently, she stars in the award-winning series "The Bear." In the show, Abby plays Natalie "Sugar" Berzatto, who is the coowner of The Beef restaurant. "It's really exciting to be a part of something that has touched so many people," Abby said about her involvement on the show during an August 2022 episode of "The Last Laugh" podcast. For nearly 15 years, Josh Ruben had been working in the industry making a name for himself on a variety of projects, but despite finding success in the world of comedy and a steady stream of commercial work, he still felt like something was missing. Eventually, Josh arrived at a crossroads, both personally and professionally, and decided it was time to get out there and start telling stories on his terms.
“This was a three-part journey for me,” explained Ruben. “I had this wonderfully privileged position of building up a brand and a name and a following for myself as a comedian and as a sketch comic writer personality as a cast member in the CollegeHumor world. But when I left CollegeHumor, I left to pursue a commercial directing career with a directing partner I had at the time, as that offered me the safety of a livable wage.”

Shortly after announcing it would revive the legendary “National Lampoon Radio Hour,” alternative comedy podcaster Forever Dog is unveiling an eclectic slate of new launches, including a scripted show from Charles Rogers and Sarah Violet-Bliss, creators of TBS’ critical hit “Search Party.” Billed as an “irreverent send-up of the entertainment industry,” “Conference Call” follows a group of inept Hollywood talent managers through a series of chaotic company-wide conference calls.
Rogers and Violet-Bliss lend their vocal talents to a cast that includes dynamic sister duo Abby Elliott and Bridey Elliott (daughters of “Schitt’s Creek” star Chris Elliott), as well as “Search Party” writer Jordan Firstman. IndieWire is debuting an exclusive clip of “Conference Call” below.
That’s not all, however, as “Full Frontal With Samantha Bee” performer Mitra Jouhari is also getting her own show, a narrative series titled “F**k Hut Music School for Teens.” Described as if “Riverdale” were on Adult Swim,...

‘The Eyeslicer’: Cult Variety Streaming Series Shifts Offline With New Festival and More — Exclusive
Cult variety TV show “The Eyeslicer” is gearing up for its second season, one that will move the streaming series into the terrestrial world with a brand new mini film festival, taking place in Brooklyn from September 14 to 17. The brainchild of creators Dan Schoenbrun and Vanessa McDonnell, the episodic series invites some of independent film’s most exciting directors to embrace their weird and experimental side in making a variety of short content, which is then weaved into thematic episodes.
The 13-episode Season 2 of “The Eyeslicer” will feature work from over 70 filmmakers, offerings that the co-creators describe as “a deep-dive into the strange, dark heart of our contemporary American hellscape, while also being an optimistic celebration of independent art-making within said hellscape.”
Starting with this new season, the internet will no longer be the series’ principal platform, but it will instead use a unique, zine-inspired mini-festival in Brooklyn and the...

One thing the new mockumentary “Frankenstein’s Monster’s Monster, Frankenstein” does quite well is prove that there are perks to appearing on a streaming service’s signature hit.
David Harbour, the stolid and familiar presence from Netflix’s “Stranger Things,” is given the opportunity to cut loose here with a broad, loopy half-hour that feels a bit like one long comedy sketch, with all that implies. He’s evidently having a great deal of fun playing his fictional late father, a pompous theater actor who acted in his own play about Dr. Frankenstein and recorded the piece for posterity. But even half an hour is a generous amount of time to give to a story that feels, well, sketchy, with reversals whose pile-up is more novel than truly funny and with jokes that feel underwritten at best.
Harbour also plays himself in the present day, working to uncover more...

What's most scary about Clara's Ghost is not the titular apparition, but the dysfunction it represents, at least for a non-performing member of a cynical show biz family. The film is set largely in and around the Reynolds family home in Connecticut. We follow them during the course of a single evening as daughters Julie (Abby Elliott) and Riley (Bridey Elliott) gather with their parents Ted (Chris Elliott) and Clara (Paula Niedert Elliott). More than by the way, it's not a coincidence that all the lead actors have the same family name, since they are all members of the same immediate family in real life. And, however fictionalized the story may be, the characters themselves, as well as their cutting interpersonal dynamics, strongly resemble the...

The first trailer has been released for an interesting looking supernatural film called Clara’s Ghost. The movie has a very strange tone that lies somewhere between comedy and madness. There were mixed reactions to this film at Sundance last year, but if you like what you see in this trailer, you might actually enjoy this movie. Here’s the synopsis:
Set over the course of a single evening in the Reynolds family home in suburban Connecticut, Clara's Ghost tells the story of Clara Reynolds who, fed up with constant ribbing from her self-absorbed showbiz family, finds solace in and guidance from the supernatural force she believes is haunting her.
The movie stars Abby Elliott, Bridey Elliott, Chris Elliott, Isidora Goreshter, Haley Joel Osment, and Paula Niedert Elliott.
Clara’s Ghost will be released on December 6, 2018.

There are some really interesting ideas threaded throughout Clara’s Ghost, the new possibly supernatural (?) comedy from writer/director Bridey Elliott. Using the paranormal as a means of examining family dynamics, Elliott clearly wants to say something about motherhood, about selfishness, about the fear of being forgotten. Unfortunately, it only occasionally comes through in what is otherwise an abrasive comedy about abrasive people, like a Noah Baumbach movie that might have a ghost in it.
The movie’s cast is made up mostly of Elliot’s real-life family as they spend an evening in their Connecticut home: the writer/director also plays Riley, a former child TV star, and her sister Abby (of Saturday Night Live fame) plays her sister Julie, who is still a successful actor and is freaking out about her wedding in a number of months. “Search Party,” the crime comedy that turned hipster ennui into a truly perilous prospect, is the best show about millennials on TV. After just two seasons, the show has received widespread critical acclaim for building wry humor and hate-to-love characters into a refreshingly gripping mystery. There is far less mystery (but just as many laughs) in “Men Don’t Whisper,” a new short film from Charles Rogers, who co-created “Search Party,” and Jordan Firstman, a writer on the show. The short, which premiered at SXSW before making its online debut Wednesday, follows a gay couple who attend a sales conference and attempt to sleep with two women in order to prove their masculinity.
Partners in real life, Firstman and Rogers play the movie’s lead characters, Reese and Peyton. Like gay characters in “Search Party,” they don’t conform to gay stereotypes often found onscreen, though in a more understated way.

The Elliott family is now three generations deep into comedy. It began with Bob Elliott, half of the comedy duo Bob and Ray. His son Chris Elliott went into comedy on Late Night with David Letterman, his own sitcom Get a Life (costarring Bob) and movies like Groundhog Day and There’s Something About Mary. Now his daughters, Abby and Bridey Elliott, are working actors. Abby was a Saturday Night Live cast member and now appears on Odd Mom Out. Bridey acts in indie movies and series too (Fort Tilden won SXSW) and she directed the whole family in Clara’s Ghost,...read more...

If you expect a movie starring the Elliott family and directed by Bridey Elliott to be a wacky laugh riot, then you really aren’t familiar with the truly weird Elliott creations. Sure, they’ve been on SNL and Silicon Valley, but the ones Chris Elliott wrote and created were Get a Life and Cabin Boy. His daughter took a moder nwoman’s extrapolation of that kind of weird comedy. The Reynolds family gather in a remote home months away from one of their daughter’s wedding. Ted Reynolds (Chris Elliott) is a TV star now struggling with the modern world of young writers...read more...

HBO introduced Big Little Lies as mini-series last year, but it was so popular, they eventually renewed it for a second season. Now, here comes the Mosaic TV show. Like Big Little Lies it has a pretty big star taking the lead. What's more, Steven Soderbergh directed it, and alternative view points of the series are available via a new, interactive iOS/Android mobile app. That seems like a pretty big investment for a six-episode series. Could it be the next anthology? Will Mosaic be cancelled or renewed for season two? Stay tuned. An HBO murder mystery Mosaic stars Sharon Stone, Garrett Hedlund, Frederick Weller, Jennifer Ferrin, Beau Bridges, Paul Reubens, Devin Ratray, Maya Kazan, James Ransone, Jeremy Bobb, Zandy Hartig, Michael Cerveris, Bridey Elliott, Brandon Ray Olive, Trey Burvant, Peter D’Alessio, Jacob Vargas, Loudon Wainwright III, and Allison Tolman.

“1970s Independent Movies Had the Biggest Influence on the Look”: Dp Markus Mentzer on Clara’s Ghost
Bridey Elliott makes her debut as a feature writer/director with Clara’s Ghost, which premieres in the Next program at Sundance 2018. Elliott has appeared as an actor on Silicon Valley, Battle of the Sexes and Steven Soderbergh’s HBO series Mosaic. Her first short film, Affections, also premiered at Sundance in 2016. To achieve the specific, ’70s-inspired aesthetic she was after for Clara’s Ghost, Bridey hired Dp Markus Mentzer. Mentzer makes his debut here as a feature film Dp, though he worked as a 1st AC on last year’s The Disaster Artist and Detroit. Below, Mentzer goes deep on the logistics of shooting a feature […]...

Coming to Sundance two years ago with her first short film, Affections, writer/director Bridey Elliott graduates this year in her return to the festival with Clara’s Ghost, her feature directorial debut. For the second consecutive year, Sundance showed an Academy-ratio film with Ghost in the title, but Bridey Elliott’s feature directorial debut Clara’s Ghost is decidedly not A Ghost Story. Bridey stars along with father Chris, sister Abby and mom Paula (the only non-actor in the bunch, though she easily holds her own). The plot’s loose: sisters Riley (Bridey) and Julie (Abby) — former child stars as the Olsen-esque Reynolds sisters — come for a one-night visit home. Father Ted (Chris) has just lost his casting in a show being put together by Julie’s fiance and is feeling rancorous. Some magazine photographers come over to take […]...

Sometimes funny, sometimes frustrating, always honest, Clara’s Ghost–written and directed by Bridey Elliott–is doing a lot on a limited budget. It stars the entire Elliott family (sister Abby, father Chris, mother Paula and Bridey herself) over the course of one strange, drunk evening. With a brisk runtime and set almost entirely in a big ole house, plenty of character tangents are introduced and nothing is really resolved. In a way, it’s admirable in its messiness.
There’s the mother, our ostensible lead here, who feels invisible next to her famous family members. She’s also being haunted by a overly-metaphorical ghost. In an impressive turn from Chris Elliott, there’s the father, an ex-comedy star struggling with the ex part. There’s the sister, obsessed with herself and her upcoming wedding, portrayed by Abby Elliott, offering a bravely complex performance. And finally, there’s Bridey herself,...

Bridey Elliott: Columbo, the tv show.
Orange Juice, the band
Ram Dass, the guru

“Battle of the Sexes” is a movie that was made by people who were convinced Hillary Clinton would be the next President of the United States (not that anyone can blame them for that). A broad and sporadically entertaining crowd-pleaser that follows tennis champions Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs as they wend their way towards the 1973 exhibition match that cemented their legacies, this isn’t a movie made by people who merely thought that Clinton was going to win, it’s a movie made by people who knew. People who knew like the rest of us knew.
Simon Beaufoy, who wrote the script before the primaries began, obviously couldn’t have predicted that Donald Trump would be the Republican nominee, but good writers have a way of intuiting these things (and grappling with their implications) long before they come to pass. By the time production began in April 2016, it was practically a done deal.

(Aotn) Fox Searchlight have released the official poster and trailer for ‘Battle of the Sexes‘. The comedy-drama, which stars Emma Stone and Steve Carrell, loosely follows the real life events of the tennis match between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs in 1973, which was dubbed “Battle of the Sexes”. The project was announced back in 2015 with Stone and Carrell attached as the leads. After Stone had some apparent scheduling conflicts, Brie Larson was in talks for a short period of time to play King, before Stone was once again confirmed to star in the film.
The film was directed by Valerie Faris & Jonathan Dayton, and was written by Simon Beaufoy. The project was produced by Christian Colson, Danny Boyle, Robert Graf. In addition to Carrell and Stone, the stellar cast includes Andrea Riseborough, Sarah Silverman, Bill Pullman, Alan Cumming, Elisabeth Shue, Austin Stowell, Natalie Morales, Jessica Mcnamee, Fred Armisen, Lewis Pullman,...

With The French Open and Wimbledon right around the corner, the Grand slam matches are on the minds of every tennis fan.
Today, Fox Searchlight Pictures has released this first trailer for the upcoming film Battle Of The Sexes.
The electrifying 1973 tennis match between World number one Billie Jean King (Emma Stone) and ex-champ and serial hustler Bobby Riggs (Steve Carell) was billed as The Battle Of The Sexes and became one of the most watched televised sports events of all time. The match caught the zeitgeist and sparked a global conversation on gender equality, spurring on the feminist movement.
Trapped in the media glare, King and Riggs were on opposite sides of a binary argument, but off-court each was fighting more personal and complex battles. With a supportive husband urging her to fight the Establishment for equal pay, the fiercely private King was also struggling to come to terms with her own sexuality,...

Political dynasties may find no love from Americans these days, but that doesn’t mean we don’t love our comedy dynasties. Fans of David Sedaris and Amy Sedaris will agree a little nepotism isn’t always a bad thing, as well as those who ate crow when Abby Elliott proved herself worthy of the strings (real or rumored) pulled by her father, “Saturday Night Live” alum Chris Elliott, to get her an audition for the show that started his career. Now, two great comedic families finally join forces as Amy Sedaris and Chris Elliott play the world’s worst parents in “Thanksgiving,” a loopy family comedy that — like its target audience — could use an Adderall.

At the time of this post, Thanksgiving is just eight days away, and Verizon and Hearst’s Seriously.TV venture is getting into the holiday spirit with a new web series. It’s called Thanksgiving, it follows the members of a dysfunctional family across a single Turkey Day, and it’s now available through Verizon’s Go90 platform.
Thanksgiving is the creation of Bethany Hall (who was a regular on the cult-favorite public-access TV series The Chris Gethard Show) and Daniel Powell (the co-creator of Inside Amy Schumer). To inject some star power into their show, Hall and Powell assembled a top-notch cast. The members of the Morgan and Tuniclif families include Bridey Elliott (who we’ve seen in several web series over the past few years), her real-life father Chris (who is an actor in his own right), and the always-exciting Amy Sedaris.
As with the other comedy shows produced under the Seriously.

Sometimes, with a web series, simplicity is key. Roommates, a new offering from creators Greg Barris and Michael Pomranz, doesn’t try to do too much, but what it does, it does well.
The stars of Roommates are Barris, a New York City comedian, and Bridey Elliott, an actress we’ve seen around these parts before. As you might guess, their characters, Greg and Fiona, live together. They’re not, however, romantically linked. Instead, they verbally combat each other with quiet, steady, dialogue. The first episode, which concerns Fiona’s crush on a maintenance man, has a bunch of strong lines and manages to knit itself together very nicely in the end. It’s also, as Bustle points out, based on one of Barris’ stand-up comedy bits.
Roommates won’t blow you away, but it should do just enough to get you to stick around.

The first hour or so of the Williamsburg comedy “Fort Tilden” is an endurance test. Watching aimless hipsters Harper (Bridey Elliott) and Allie (Clare McNulty) snipe at each other and everyone around them is rather like being forced to listen to a loud and inane conversation between two nasty idiots on the bus. By the fifth time the two start whining about how they need coffeeeee soooooo baaaaad (like, Omg), you start hoping writer-directors Sarah-Violet Bliss and Charles Rogers will do you a solid and have their defiantly unlikable characters hit by a truck. Stat. Unlikability is a tricky game.
