Over the past few years, we've seen many films that pay homage to 1980s cinema. Just last year there was Paul, Super 8, and Attack the Block, to name a few. Now audiences can prepare for another helping of nostalgia with Great Scott, a film that pays tribute to Robert Zemeckis' Back to the Future Trilogy. The movie takes place in 1980s Manchester, England and centers on a teenage boy who loves the sci-fi classic so much that he wants to become Marty McFly, attempting to escape his mundane, working-class life in the process. Financing will come from Philm Company, Sonic Screenworks and Lip Sync, who have helped produce such films as We Need to Talk About Kevin and Jane Eyre. Alex Child and Hiram Bleetman wrote the script and filming is planned to start this spring. While you may not recognize the name of the director, Phil Hawkins,...

Phil Hawkins, a filmmaker who was a contestant on the Steven Spielberg-produced filmmaking competition reality show On the Lot, has been tapped to direct Great Scott. The film is a love-letter inspired by — and, to some degree, dependent upon — Robert Zemeckis‘ beloved 80′s time-travel comedy Back to the Future. [Moviehole, via /Film]
Scripted by newbie writers Alex Child and Hiram Bleetman, Great Scott follows a working-class teen in the industrial wasteland of 1980′s Manchester, England who is so fed up with his existence that he longs to live out the big screen fantasies of everyone’s favorite reluctant time traveler, Marty McFly. And that’s all we know about the plot at this time. Given our ’80s remake mania, approaching that bygone (and best forgotten) era on this meta-level could prove more interesting that this project sounds at the moment.
More significantly (to me, anyway), this is perhaps the first time a...

Get ready to go Back to the Future with a new film that is going into production called Great Scott. Moviehole is reporting that the film is about a teenager in 1980′s Manchester, England who falls so in love with Robert Zemeckis’s 1985 hit that he tries to become Marty McFly. The main character is a slightly despondent working class teenager who would do anything to escape his mundane life and have the kind of adventures Marty McFly did in the hit film.
Phil Hawkins is set to direct the film based on a script by Alex Child and Hiram Bleetman. The project is a joint venture between Philm Company, Sonic Screenworks and Lip Sync. This is the same company that financed such recent films as We Need to Talk About Kevin and Jane Eyre.

[1] It seems like just about everyone who grew up in the '80s and '90s considers themselves a fan of Robert Zemeckis' Back to the Future movies, and with good reason; that trilogy has held up surprisingly well over the years. But there's being a fan, and then there's being completely and utterly obsessed. Like, try-to-actually-become-Marty-McFly obsessed. Directed by Phil Hawkins, the upcoming Bttf-inspired Great Scott will be about a young man who falls squarely into the latter category. More about the film after the jump. MovieHole [2] reports that Great Scott will focus on an unhappy working class teen in '80s Manchester, England who develops a fixation on the 1985 sci-fi comedy classic and, along with it, a burning desire to leave behind his humdrum life and live out the adventures of his cinematic hero. It's not clear how closely Great Scott will mirror Back to the Future,...

A trailer has finally arrived for Michael Bartlett and Kevin Gates' sequel to their sleeper hit The Zombie Diaries. Unfortunately it's not in the best shape, and I've been in contact with the team to try and get a better copy, but for now you can get a low-res taste of the horrors that await you.
Synopsis:
Three months have passed since a viral outbreak wiped out 99.9% of the world's population, turning its victims into flesh-eating living dead. In the UK a surviving band of soldiers and civilians have taken refuge at a rural military barracks. Life in this new world is tough and brutal, but hope appears when a high-level communication is received from a military base on the coast, telling of sanctuary elsewhere in Europe...
But just as salvation appears to be in reach, the base suffers an overwhelming defeat at the hands of the living dead!

Touted as the UK’s answer to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Gnaw (just out on U.S. DVD from Dark Sky) shares many elements with its illustrious predecessor. Both feature a group of attractive teens intent on a relaxing vacation in the country. Both contain the horror-staple image of a girl running down a road with her attacker in hot pursuit. Both films’ villains are cannibalistic in nature. But while Gnaw works to follow these established rules, it also deviates frequently from the well-traveled path of its subgenre.
The setup is rather conventional: Six friends travel deep into the country for a little R&R, only to find themselves stalked by a lumbering, ominously large pitchfork-wielding maniac (Gary Faulkner). As if a Breakfast Club reunion were taking place, all stereotypes are present, with each actor playing their part to a T. We have the overbearing ice queen (Rachel Mitchem), the...

Variety reports that Mpi Media has picked up U.S. rights to the British shocker Gnaw from Jinga Films. The film will presumably go out under the company’s genre banner, Dark Sky Films.
Directed by Gregory Mandry from a script by Michael Bell and Max Waller, Gnaw is a black-comic terror tale in which six travelers in the British countryside intrude on an apparently unoccupied house, and run afoul of a clan of cannibals who want to make the friends their next meal. The cast includes Sara Dylan, Oliver Lee Squires, Rachel Mitchem, Nigel Croft Adams, Julie Vandoome, Hiram Bleetman, Jennifer Wren, Carrie Cohen and Gary Faulkner. “This is British horror at its most base, vile and rude; fans will love it,” Mpi’s Greg Newman tells the trade.
