Few video games have managed to build up as much of a cult following as Access Games’ critically divisive open-world survival horror opus, Deadly Premonition. Not only did 2010’s Xbox 360 exclusive earn a prestigious spot in the Guinness World Records for being the most critically polarising video game of all time, but it also went on to become a legit cultural phenomenon that was later ported to the PC, PlayStation 3, and the Nintendo Switch. Frankly, to call Deadly Premonition the marmite of video games would be a massive understatement. Seriously, you really do either love it or hate it.
The strange thing is, for a murder mystery about an idiosyncratic FBI agent who has a penchant for coffee, cigarettes and 80’s B-movies, Hidetaka Suehiro’s rough-around-the-edges fourth-wall-breaking crime-thriller harbored a deep, meaningful story that not only emotionally resonated with fans, but skewered our preconceptions of what makes a game, well,...

Deadly Premonition 2 is almost here, but early reviews of the game reveal that the sequel is plagued by some truly astonishing technical problems.
We know that it may not come as a surprise to hear that the sequel to the infamously “so bad it’s good” Deadly Premonition isn’t a technical masterpiece, but we don’t know if you can truly appreciate how bad the game’s performance is until you see it in motion. From various glitches to loading screens so long you’d swear they’re a deliberate throwback to the PS1, Deadly Premonition 2 is looking rough.
Yet, the biggest technical issue with Deadly Premonition 2 is the game’s frame rate. At best, Deadly Premonition 2‘s frame rate is far below optimal. At worst, the game slows down so badly that it produces a kind of “slideshow” effect that can render the game nearly unplayable.
That’s bad,...

Update: It might have been that Suda and Swery were a little presumptuous in their livestream, as Devolver Digital has responded to the duo’s claim of meeting with them to discuss the game: Gonna need @SUDA_51 and @Swery65 to pitch us this mysterious game we’re supposedly publishing. Name a time and place, gentlemen. https://t.co/duvQWVj1CO — […]...

“Deadly Premonition” creator Hidetaka “Swery” Suehiro just released a demo for his latest project, a “debt repayment daily life RPG” called “The Good Life.”
Users can try the demo by clicking on a Google Drive link provided by Suehiro on Twitter. While the game initially required an Xbox controller to play, Swery tweeted Wednesday the demo now also supports a PlayStation 4 controller or keyboard/mouse.
“We did our best to prepare this Asap in order to grant everyone’s wishes,” developer White Owls Inc. wrote on the game’s Kickstarter page. “There are a bunch of bugs present in the build, but we hope you’ll enjoy this chance to visit the world of ‘The Good Life’ much earlier than scheduled!”
We finally released a Prototype Demo of The Good Lifehttps://t.co/rm3jr3i7qf

From the designer of the incredibly strange Deadly Premonition comes The Missing. Here's Swery himself with a quick teaser...
Anyone who's played Deadly Premonition probably won't forget the experience in a hurry. A lumpen and deeply strange survival horror adventure, its story and tone was evidently cribbed from David Lynch's Twin Peaks, but its eccentricities ran far deeper than its story and visuals. This was a game, after all, that featured some distinctly lumpen controls, visibly shoddy programming, odd mini-game digressions, and a protagonist whose beard constantly grew as you played.

With stuff like that going on, Deadly Premonition understandably garnered a cult following, and its creator, Hidetaka "Swery" Suehiro, is now something of a gaming celebrity.
Swery's eccentricities look certain to continue in his next game, simply titled The Missing. We know almost knothing about it yet other than it'll...

Very few videogames have great endings. We look at some of the best, and wonder if developers are wasting their time with them...
Spoiler Alert: There's no way around this. We talk about videogame endings in this feature. In particular: Halo 2, Mass Effect 3, Borderlands and, er, 1942. Also, the top 15 countdown below inevitably spoils the ending to each of the games mentioned.
They say it's not the goal that's important, but the journey to get there. This can be applied to many things, from life to sport, and also to gaming. In fact, there are few examples quite as fitting as gaming when it comes to this saying, as the journey is what the game is all about, with the ending a mere reward for all of that gaming you've indulged in. If the journey to get to the end isn't enjoyable, you're likely never going to get...
