The good news for NFL fans this week was that that the replacement referees were done. The bad news for NY Jets fans is that the Replacement Jets are just getting started. With the 2011 football season at risk due to the current NFL lockout, players are keeping busy in more ways that one. QBs Tom Brady, Peyton Manning and Drew Brees, among several other players, have filed lawsuits against the NFL in an attempt to block the lockout, while some other players are using their free time to give back.

Rex Ryan's foot fetish, Sal Alosi's dirty coaching, endless trash talk-Super Bowl bound? Allen Barra analyzes the Jets circus, and why they might actually be America's team.
If, as critics have charged, the New York Jets' season has been one long media circus, then the main event will be Sunday night, when the Jets play the Pittsburgh Steelers for the Afc championship and a berth in the February 6 Super Bowl. The clown show began in August with the HBO reality series, Hard Knocks, which followed the team through its training camp and captured each glorious expletive bellowed by head coach Rex Ryan.

Taken in a vacuum, the bulk of Monday night's (October 11) NFL game between the New York Jets and the visiting Minnesota Vikings was pretty dull. For most of the game, the Jets quietly dominated the line of scrimmage and played stout defense while their offense had trouble getting into a groove (they mostly settled for field goals). But luckily, the internal drama unfolding within the game's four quarters made it one of the most entertaining and enthralling game on the sports landscape this year. Ultimately, the Jets topped the Vikings 29-20, but there's more to the game than the score.
There were plenty of story lines coming into the game, as Vikings wide receiver Randy Moss was making his return to the team after being traded from the New England Patriots, while Jets receiver Santonio Holmes was returning from a drug-related suspension. The Jets were also welcoming back cornerback Darelle Revis,...

Monday night (October 11) is a great night to be a sports fan. Not only will the San Francisco Giants attempt to close out their National League Divisional Series against the Atlanta Braves, but there is also a tremendous NFL match-up going down tonight at the New Meadowlands Stadium. The New York Jets will play host to the Minnesota Vikings tonight, and while the two teams don't necessarily have much of a history or a rivalry, there are a handful of intriguing stories that will be played out over the course of the game.
Tonight's game represents return engagements for a pair of wide receivers. On the Jets' side, former Super Bowl Mvp Santonio Holmes will make his way back to the lineup after serving a four game suspension (for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy), which should give quarterback Mark Sanchez another target to help expand the team's still-evolving offensive attack.

Blown calls should be a thing of the past by now. New technology is helping refs avoid big flubs, catching fouls when they turn a blind eye or zeroing in on too-close-to-call plays through Matrix-style instant replay. We've already seen how successful these innovations have been deployed in tennis with its "Hawk-Eye" officiating; soon, this tech could be coming to football and also ... football.
A report out this week claims the NFL is in discussions with Cairos Technologies about possible "chip-in-ball technology." The German-based firm would be implanting microchips in footballs to help referees more accurately determine whether the pigskin had indeed passed first-down or touchdown lines. Cairos is also said to be bidding to bring the same technology to the soccer pitch. Both sports have been plagued with blown calls for years, and while the NFL currently uses instant replay for contentious calls, soccer has been especially tech-agnostic.
