It’s a well known fact that the Devil gets all the best tunes and villians have a lot more personality than goodie-goodie heroes, especially in animation. After all, who wouldn’t take a night out with Dick Dastardly and Muttley over Peter Perfect and Penelope Pitstop? There's a complexity to Tom McGrath’s animation, however, that goes beyond hijinks and arguably makes it superior to the similarly themed Despicable Me. For all that he hates heroes blue bad guy (Will Ferrell) discovers it's tricky to be an evildoer if there's no superhero trying to stop you. Beyond a surprising amount of depth, there's some solid slapstick gags on offer and the action has plenty of verve but it's the excellent voice cast - also featuring Jonah Hill and Tina Fey - and strong storytelling that really make it a winner.

‘Brock: Over the Top.’
Kriv Stenders’ feature documentary on motor racing legend Peter Brock, Brock: Over the Top will start to roll out in cinemas on Thursday before its Premium VOD release on July 3.
The movie produced by WildBear Entertainment’s Veronica Fury and other PVOD releases such as Ben Lawrence’s Hearts and Bones and Alexs Stadermann’s animated feature 100% Wolf are benefiting from the willingness of some independent cinemas to screen films just before or while they are available on home entertainment.
This is a boon for the VOD platforms recently launched by Dendy Cinemas, the Ritz Cinema in Sydney and Melbourne’s Classic, Lido and Cameo Cinemas and the Golden Age Cinema.
However the usual 90-day theatrical window is expected to be reinstated when cinemas around the country are back in business, except for alternate content releases such as musical concerts and National Theatre Live.

Kriv Stenders on the set of ‘Slim & I.’
Amid the Covid-19 crisis filmmaker Kriv Stenders alternates between feeling terrified, depressed and positive – but, on balance, he is extremely optimistic.
The writer-director believes the Australian screen industry will be forever changed by the pandemic – mostly for the better.
In a webinar today with Screen Producers Australia CEO Matt Deaner, Stenders said he was “future-proofing” his development slate even before the virus erupted because he expected the industry to re-set.
That includes a ‘four quadrant’ film designed for wide cinema release, a genre feature and two documentaries, one of which can be filmed remotely.
This crisis will “galvanise all of us us; it’s a battle call,” says the director of Danger Close: The Battle of Long Tan, Doctor Doctor, Jack Irish and The Pacific: In the Wake of Captain Cook with Sam Neill.
“It will completely change the way I make films on every level.

Network Ten is betting heavily on new and returning reality shows in 2015 to maintain the momentum of this year.s ratings growth and to make the company a more attractive take-over target as potential buyers circle.
