GOP Left With Tiny One-Seat House Majority As Chaos Grows In Party After Rep. Mike Gallagher Resigns
Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-Wisconsin) plans to leave the House of Representatives as early as next month. With Gallagher’s departure planned for April 19, House Speaker Mike Johnson will be left with just a one-vote majority.
Gallagher’s exit date will mean there is no special election before November, so Wisconsin law states the seat must remain empty. Earlier in the year, Gallagher stated he would not seek reelection. Part of his decision is due to the backlash he received for not voting to impeach Homeland Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.
A shift in the House’s balance may pose a risk for Johnson. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Georgia) filed a motion to oust Johnson, citing that Johnson “betrayed [their] conference” by breaking their rules of order and working with Democrats. It is unclear when the motion will come to a vote. No Republicans have publicly supported Greene’s notion as of yet.

Republican lawmakers in the House are once again at each other’s throats, this time over their efforts to secure hardline border and immigration reform.
On Friday, Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas) skewered former President Donald Trump — and members of his own party — for failing to secure the border during his own time in office during an interview on Fox Business.
“President Trump failed, along with Republicans … they failed in 2018 to actually move a border security bill to tighten this so that we weren’t dealing with this crisis right now,...

Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy said that he will resign his congressional seat at the end of the year, bringing to an end an often tumultuous tenure in GOP leadership.
“I will continue to recruit our country’s best and brightest to run for elected office,” he wrote in a Wall Street Journal op ed that was published on Wednesday. “The Republican Party is expanding every day, and I am committed to lending my experience to support the next generation of leaders.”
McCarthy was ousted as House speaker in October, after just 10 months, amid bitter divisions with members on the far right. He faced a decision on his future this week, the deadline for filing for reelection for his Bakersfield area congressional seat.
His exit will leave the GOP with an even smaller majority in the House, although it’s expected that McCarthy will be succeeded by a Republican after...

Jim Jordan shed even more support from his caucus in a third failed vote to secure the Speakership, and on Friday the Republican caucus deemed that he is no longer their Speaker Designate.
Twenty-five Republicans voted against Jordan’s nomination during a Friday floor vote, an increase in defections from the 22 who voted against him on Wednesday, and 20 on Tuesday. Hours later, Jordan lost a secret ballot during a closed door conference vote, effectively ending his run for the gavel.

Update: Back to square one: Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Oh) is out as the Republican nominee for Speaker of the House.
Jordan fell short in roll call votes this week, and lost even more ground in a third ballot Friday.
“We need to come together and figure out who are speaker is going to be,” Jordan told reporters today.
Members are leaving for the weekend. Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-Nc), who is serving as speaker pro tem, said there will be a candidate forum Monday night and conference elections to select a nominee on Tuesday morning.
“We’ll have to go back to the drawing board,” said Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-ca), who was ousted as speaker earlier this month. “What history will look at, the crazy eights, led by [Matt] Gaetz, the amount of damage they have done to this party and this country, is insurmountable. … We are in a very bad position as a party.

Jim Jordan lost a floor vote to become House Speaker on Tuesday. He lost by an even wider margin on Wednesday. He decided against a third vote on Thursday — which many predicted would have gone even worse for the Ohio Republican — instead opting to back a resolution to appoint Rep. Patrick McHenry as a temporary Speaker until the caucus could rally around a permanent leader.
It didn’t go so well.

Update, 11:57 a.m. Pt: The Republican leadership chaos continues, as a plan to designate a temporary speaker has been sidelined and Rep. Jim Jordan (R-oh) made plans for another floor vote.
Jordan, who has failed in two votes to become speaker, earlier today embraced a plan in which a resolution would be offered so that the current speaker pro tem, Patrick McHenry, would get additional powers through January. Jordan would have still been in the speaker race, but it would have given him more time to win over holdouts, which numbered 22 on Wednesday.
But in the closed door Republican conference meeting, there was a revolt among some members, particularly those on the far right, who viewed it as a coalition plan that would give additional power to Democrats.
After the temporary speaker plan was presented, “We decided that wasn’t where we were going to go,” Jordan told reporters.

Two strikes, he’s out. Jim Jordan will not attempt a third floor vote to confirm his nomination for the speakership.
Following two failed votes on Tuesday and Wednesday, the Ohio congressman has determined not to bring his nomination to the floor on Thursday. He will instead back the interim appointment of Speaker Pro Tem Patrick McHenry (R-N.C.) as House speaker through January, according to multiple reports.
Jordan insisted on Wednesday that he did not support the push to appoint McHenry, and was reportedly planning as late as Thursday...

Update: Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Oh) lost ground in his bid to become House speaker, as he again fell short of a majority in a roll call vote.
Twenty-two Republicans voted against him, two more than did so in Tuesday’s vote.
The latest tally was 199 votes for Jordan and 212 for House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries.
Jordan won over some members who voted against him on Tuesday, but he lost others. It’s unclear whether he will move to a third vote. The House went into recess after the final tally was announced. Jordon told reporters afterward that he hasn’t decided if he will pursue a third vote.
In nominating Jordan, Rep. Tom Cole (R-ok) urged Republicans to end the “chaos” of the past two weeks, calling the Ohio congressman an “honorable man.”
That was a contrast to Rep. Pete Aguilar (D-ca), who blasted Jordan’s role in January...

Update, 6:21 a.m. Pt: President Joe Biden said that he would ask the Congress to pass an “unprecedented support package for Israel’s defense.”
Speaking during his visit to Israel, Biden said that the U.S. will “keep Iron Dome fully supplied so that they can continue standing sentinel over Israeli skies, saving Israeli lives.”
As of now, nothing can move through the House of Representatives because Republicans have been unable to elect a new speaker. Another vote on Jim Jordon’s bid is scheduled for this morning, but there are doubts that he has the vote and increasing talk of empowering speaker pro tem Patrick McHenry with the ability to move legislation on a temporary basis.
The president also said that Israel had agreed that humanitarian aid can be transported from Egypt to Gaza. He said that is Hamas “diverts or steals the assistance, they will have demonstrated...

As congress continues to search for a replacement House Speaker, two frontrunners emerged last week, in the form of Rep. Jim Jordan and Rep. Steve Scalise. Both options were pretty bleak for John Oliver, especially considering the latter candidate has previously likened himself to the former leader of the Ku Klux Klan.
To kick off his second episode of “Last Week Tonight,” Oliver immediately got into Kevin McCarthy’s ouster, first poking fun at Patrick McHenry, who is filling the role in the interim.
Oliver joked that he looks like “Patton Oswalt as a ventriloquist dummy” and, like most of the late night hosts did this week, had a laugh at how hard McHenry slammed the gavel to adjourn the House after McCarthy was booted. The late night host then turned his attention to Jordan and Scalise, pointing out that Scalise was once equated to “David Duke without the baggage.

Update: Kevin McCarthy spoke to reporters for nearly 50 minutes, in which he at first tried to strike a tone of gratitude and positivity about his tenure but then got into some score setting of the eight members who voted to oust him.
He said that they are not conservative but “angry and chaotic.” Of Rep. Nancy Mace (R-Sc), he said, “is a whole other story,” suggesting that she is lying when she says that he hasn’t kept his word.
Of Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-fl), who led the effort to remove him, McCarthy said, “You know it was personal. It was not about spending….It was about ethics.” Gaetz is the subject of an ethics committee investigation. “Just because Gaetz said something, don’t believe it’s true. I haven’t heard him say one true thing yet.”

Kevin McCarthy has been ousted as Speaker of the House of Representatives. The vote comes as part of a campaign from Rep. Matt Gaetz and a posse of like-minded Republicans who have long opposed McCarthy, who is the first speaker to be axed as a result of a motion to vacate from his own party.
The House voted 216-210 to remove McCarthy on Tuesday afternoon. Eight Republicans joined Democrats in vote in favor of the motion: Reps. Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.), Ken Buck (R-Colo.), Tim Burchett (R-Tenn.), Eli Crane (R-Ariz.

Update: Kevin McCarthy, in his first speech after being elected speaker, said, “I hope that one thing is clear after this week: I never give up.”
“My father always told me: It’s not how you start. It’s how you finish. We have got to finish strong for the American people.”
But he signaled that Republicans would conduct an extensive series of inquiries and investigations. “Let me be clear: We will use the power of the purse and the power of the subpoena to get the job done.” He promised probes of the “origins of Covid and the weaponization of the FBI.”
After his own swearing in, at 1:35 Am Et on Saturday, McCarthy gave the oath to all of the members of the 118th Congress.
Previously: Kevin McCarthy won the speakership on the 15th House ballot, ending weeklong drama, GOP discord that at times played out on the House floor.

Update: After five roll call votes and no speaker. the House is adjourning for the night.
When they return, many members will be marking the second anniversary of the attack on the Capitol.
Previously: As expected, Kevin McCarthy fell short on the 11th ballot for speaker of the House.
While there are reports of an imminent deal with at least some of the dissidents, an agreement doesn’t appear to be finalized as McCarthy’s allies plan to seek an adjournment until noon Et/9 Am Pt on Friday.
On the floor, Democrats have been in a large huddle around Hakeem Jeffries and other leaders.
Jeffries received 212 votes in the most recent roll call, McCarthy received 200, Byron Donalds garnered 12, Kevin Hern got 7 and Donald Trump got one. There were some guffaws when the clerk read Trump’s vote total.

Louisiana Congressman Steve Scalise’s condition has been upgraded from critical to serious, People confirms, as friends, family and colleagues continue to rally around him after he was shot and wounded last week during baseball practice.
“Doctors are happy with the progress he’s made,” Scalise’s press secretary, Lauren Fine, tells People. “But his doctors said he will be in the hospital for some time.”
Scalise, (R-La.) the third-ranking Gop leader in the House, was one of four people shot when a gunman opened fire early Wednesday morning while the Republican team practiced in Alexandria, Virginia, for the annual bipartisan Congressional Baseball Game.
