It's no surprise that some streaming platforms get more attention from viewers because they're generally more popular and produce a lot more original series. But that doesn't mean that the other platforms are less successful or produce less quality content.
The whole world has gone mad with the recent release of a new horror K-drama on Netflix. The series called Parasyte: The Grey was at the top of the platform’s Global Chart and already has a 100% Rotten Tomatoes score.
The premise of the series is terrifying yet simple: humans must find a way to win the war against the unknown new evil robot creations that look more like monsters. But while Netflix launched the fantasy thriller, Hulu and Disney+ released another hit series called Blood Free on April 10.

Bf, a bio-technology company that started the era of artificially cultured meat, dominates the market, and people who doubt the Bf CEO's actions begin to appear one after another, both inside & outside. The series tells of a world of superior genes & viruses where all food is consumed in the form of a pill. Following those who harbor suspicions on the whereabouts of the CEO of Bf,...

A scene from the Korean action drama-adventure Ransomed. Courtesy of Well Go USA.
South Korea has exported a slew of first-rate action flicks in the past few years, and Ransomed counts as another. Most have been based on cops vs. bad guys within the country. This one, supposedly based on real events, takes us to Lebanon in the 1980s. It also plies the waters of plot complexities and suspense more, without sacrificing the action component.
As factional wars rage within Lebanon, one group kidnaps a Korean diplomat, holding him for over a year before finally demanding a $5 million ransom. A foreign-service colleague, Min-joon (Ha Jung-woo), volunteers for the risky task of delivering the cash and returning with the hostage, even though he’s been a desk jockey without any military that would prepare him for the likely difficulties in achieving the rescue. Corrupt police are swarming the airport, waiting to...

For many, Kim Seong-hun made one of the best non-serial killer South Korean thriller in “A Hard Day”. While he followed that up with the rather well-made but comparatively underwhelming “Tunnel”, he has since settled for creating a zombie-infested Joseon for Netflix's ultra-popular series “Kingdom”. For his much-awaited return to the big screen, he follows “Escape from Mogadishu” and “The Point Men” in adapting a real-life situation involving Korean diplomats finding themselves in a pickle overseas, for an action adventure feature presentation.

Korea’s box office reached 70% of pre-pandemic levels of revenue in the first half of 2023, according to data released by the Korean Film Council (Kofic).
Korean action film The Roundup: No Way Out was the highest-grossing film of the period – pulling in $82M from 10.68 million admissions – followed by two Japanese animated features, Suzume and The First Slam Dunk, and U.S. titles Avatar: The Way Of Water and Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3.
Total box office for the period reached $475M (KRW607.8Bn), equivalent to 72.5% of average box office during the January-June period in 2017-2019, before Covid-19 shuttered cinemas and played havoc with release schedules.
As in many other territories, the recovery was partly due to ticket price increases, as admissions totalled 58.39 million, which is only 57.8% of the pre-pandemic average in the same period during 2017-2019.

"You don't have to worry about who you can trust, if you just don't trust anyone." Well, I guess that's true? Sure, okay. Well Go USA has revealed an official trailer for a Korean action thriller titled Ransomed, which is apparently the final release title in addition to its name Unofficial Operation. This movie is set to open in theaters in the US at the exact same time as in Korea, starting in early August this summer - in just a few weeks. A young diplomat is assigned the task of carrying the ransom money to rescue an abducted diplomat in Lebanon, and a local taxi driver accidentally gets involved in the mission. When the plan goes awry, he is forced to team up with the driver—the only Korean expat he can find—and go deep into the heart of Lebanon in a final desperate attempt to bring their fellow countryman home.

Fogs, dogs and toxic smogs are just the headliner adversities hurled at the motley band of misfits determined to survive Kim Tae Gon’s “Project Silence,” by no means a classic in the Korean action-thriller pantheon, but a good enough stopgap for a rainy Sunday until the next one comes along. Set on a cataclysm-prone Seoul highway bridge with suspension cables, like those of our disbelief, destined at some point to snap, Kim’s screenplay — co-written with Park Joo Suk and Kim Hong Hwa — cleaves so close to disaster-movie formula it’s hard to believe it needed three human screenwriters to gin it up. Given that its most lunatic flourish is the addition of dozens of slavering government-engineered superdogs, maybe it was partially generated by algrrrithm.

Historically, zombies are more associated with cinema than TV. Originally defined in a modern context by George Romero’s 1968 classic Night of the Living Dead, in the decades since, zombies have evolved (watch out!) to become one of pop culture’s most recognizable horror tropes—to the point where they even pop up in TV shows that are decidedly not about zombies. In honor of All Of Us Are Dead, the horrifying zombie K-drama that just dropped on Netflix, we’re taking the time to recommend some of our favorite zombie TV shows of all time.
All of Us Are Dead
Adapted from a Naver webtoon of the same name, 지금 우리 학교는 (which translates directly as “Our School Now”) follows a group of high school students as they fight to stay alive when their school becomes ground zero for a zombie outbreak. Though the TV show isn’t doing...

The final few minutes of the last episode of “Kingdom Season 2” saw Ju Ji-hoon’s Crown Prince Lee Chang and Bae Doona’s Seo Bi travel North to find out more about the mysterious flower that brings the dead back to life, only to come face to face with a mysterious woman who keeps zombies as pets in cages, boxes and chains. Since then, fans have been wondering who this woman, played by the amazing Jun Ji-hyun, is and have been looking forward to finding out more about her. While viewers waited for the eventual season 3, Netflix announced that they would instead be doing a special one-off extended episode, a spin-off if you will, called “Kingdom: Ashin of the North” that would answer to the mystery of this character and her bloody, brutal past.
This special episode begins a few decades before the events in “Kingdom”, when trouble was...

Being the fourth collaboration between Kim Sung-soo and Jung Woo-sung, after “Beat” (1997), “City of The Rising Sun” (1999) and “Musa The Warrior” (2001), and featuring an all star cast, “Asura: The City of Madness” was one of the most anticipated films of the year. However, and in contrast to the global rule that wants films that create much buzz to lack quality, this time, the hype was absolutely justified.

As part of its global expansion strategy, Netflix has thrown its doors wide open to storytellers of different cultures. One result of the initiative: “Kingdom,” a story told by South Korean filmmakers that’s rooted in the nation’s medieval Joseon period.
Directed by Kim Seong-hun (“Tunnel”) and penned by Kim Eun-hee (“Signal”), the eight-episode series, which premiered Jan. 25, centers on Prince Cheng (Ji-Hoon Ju) and his mission to investigate a mysterious plague that turns into a zombie rampage.
Production design and costumes were key in re-creating the distinct look of the Joseon dynasty. “In some cases the view of the Asian culture can be limited to China and Japan,” notes production designer Lee Hwo-kyoung, whose art direction on “The Battleship Island” won a 2017 Blue Dragon Award, South Korea’s version of an Oscar.
“Kingdom” costume designer Kwon Yoo-jin says the team was looking for a balance between the magnificent and the mundane.
