AMC Theatres announced its first newly-built theater of 2022 – the AMC Dine-In Topanga 12 in Canoga Park — will open June 2 as the pandemic-rattled exhibition business reshuffles.
The launch will follow by a day the close of operations at nearby AMC Promenade 16 in Woodland Hills as the exhibitors continue to fine tune portfolios and upgrade theaters if they can.
This cinema, in partnership with developer Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield, is a core entertainment anchor in the expansion at Westfield Topanga & The Village, a former department store space, AMC said. It features Imax with laser and Dolby Cinema premium formats and is the latest addition to AMC’s group of dine-in theaters, a feature that’s proven increasingly success for chains trying to turn movies into night-out events to lure patrons. Guests place their order in the lobby. It will also offer beer, wine and cocktails – another spreading industry selling point — “in the coming weeks.”

AMC Theatres has promoted Dan Ellis from SVP, Development and International to EVP, Chief Operations & Development Officer. In addition, the No 1 exhibitor has hired Eliot Hamlisch as EVP and Chief Marketing Officer, after an extensive national search.
Given Ellis’ new role, international duties, which previously reported to Ellis will shift instead to be supervised by AMC EVP & CFO Sean Goodman.
Ellis succeeds John McDonald, who is retiring as the head of U.S. Operations after a 47-year movie theatre career, all with AMC.
Hamlisch takes over marketing leadership from Stephen Colanero, who is retiring after 12 years as the CMO at AMC.
The retirements of Colanero and McDonald have been long in the making. Each executive stayed committed to the circuit during the Covid impacted years of 2020 and 2021.
Hamlisch joins AMC from Wyndham Hotels & Resorts where he served as EVP, Loyalty and Revenue Optimization. Prior to Wyndham, Hamlisch worked for Starwood Hotels & Resorts,...

As cinemas darkened across England on Thursday for a month-long lockdown to fight the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic, those in the exhibition sector are gamely playing ball, despite knowing full well that the latest enforced closure could mean that some cinemas may not reopen at all.
“The biggest loss will be to our audiences,” Dan Ellis, managing director of the independent Jam Jar cinema in the northeastern seaside town of Whitley Bay, tells Variety. “[These are] the local people who have gradually built confidence to return to U.K. cinemas, who over the last few months have seen a diverse slate of, frankly, quite brilliant films which have had more screen time than normal, and an opportunity to shine in the absence of tentpole releases.”
Phil Clapp, chief executive of exhibitors org U.K. Cinema Association, underlines that the restrictions are especially hard to stomach considering the dearth of Covid-19 cases traced back to cinemas.

Craig Ramsey, CFO of AMC Entertainment, addressed hot topics including the exhibitor’s flagging stock price and its outlook on the 2020 film slate, streaming and windows in an appearance at Citibank’s Tmt West Conference.
“Everybody’s been saying it’s not going to be as good a year” in 2020, Ramsey said. “Well, we’ll see. Clearly, it doesn’t look like, just in terms of the titles, like it’s going to be as strong. That’s going to fit into this whole streaming dialogue as well.”
Earlier Tuesday, AMC’s stock fell to a multi-year low of $7 a share before closing at $7.13. It posted one of the sharpest declines of any media or entertainment stock in 2019. One source of investor angst is Netflix’s multi-billion-dollar investment in its movie business, manifest in 2019 with marquee titles like The Irishman and 6 Underground. Box office was the third-highest total ever recorded last year,...

Dread Central has gotten wind of a secretive project being developed entitled The Profane Exhibit, a new anthology film dealing with the nature of corruption that looks to be a no-holds barred shocker. Although just a few slivers of information have been leaked about this ten-part compilation, what we've seen thus far indicates some serious pushing of the boundaries of good taste, and we've got high hopes for it.
Three of the film's ten directors have been announced, and it seems to be a true rogues' gallery running the show at The Profane Exhibit. Try these names on for size:
Directing a segment entitled Manna, straight from one of the most visually disturbing horror films ever created, August Underground's Mordum, is Michael Todd Schneider. That name alone should be enough to curl the toes of even the most hardened viewer. But that's just the beginning.

There are four notable horror features releasing Tuesday, March 29th on DVD or Blu-Ray. The After Dark Originals are hosting two of the films, including Husk and Prowl. Another is from Canadian director Ryan Nicholson (Gutterballs), while the final entry is the second film in thirty years from production company Hammer Films - The Resident.
If you are a Blu-Ray fan, then you will be disappointed with this weeks horror selections, as only The Resident, starring Hilary Swank, is available in high definition digital. As well, the majority of the special features for these discs will be on The After Dark entries, Husk and Prowl. Have a look at the release details for each one of these horror titles inside.

Ryan Nicholson is a fans director and one of my favorite filmmakers. He makes movies for the horror fans and he knows what we like, blood, gore, boobs and crazy killers on the loose. From doing make-up FX work on hit shows like Smallville and Sg-1, to blockbusters like Ghost Rider he also likes to take his turn behind the camera and tell his own stories including Famine, Gutterballs and his newest, Bleading Lady. Check out my latest "Versus" with director Ryan Nicholson.
Brian S- First of Ryan, how'd you get into filmmaking?
Ryan Nicholson- I think growing up on shows like "Hilarious House of Frightenstein" and creature features on late night cable really shaped my future. I've been obsessed with horror and monsters ever since I could walk and talk. Doing make-up effects was a good introduction into film-making. I still do make-up effects from time to time.

Bleeding Lady (aka Star Vehicle) confirms cult / horror director Ryan Nicholson (Hanger, Gutterballls) as the "king of cinematic sleaze"(cinesploitation) and serves up plenty of blood-splattering gore, nudity, and dark humor.
Bleeding Lady, which stars Dan Ellis, Sindy Faraguna and Nathan Durec, deals with Don. A chauffeur and a movie buff who takes his job seriously - very seriously. When his latest assignment takes him to the set of a low-budget horror film, he's overjoyed to learn he'll be driving Riversa Red - His favorite B-movie "Srceam Queen." While driving his beloved idol, Don assumes the role of bodyguard and turns fiercely protective, especially after learning that Riversa has a stalker. Hell-bent on protecting his queen and fueled by paranoid fantasies, Don's usual temper tantrums go to fatal extremes. Soon he proves to be not only Riversa's biggest fan, but her worst nightmare as well. As HorrorNews.net puts it,...

Full disclosure: a screener DVD of this film was provided for review by Breaking Glass Pictures, which is the parent company of Vicious Circle Films.
Director/writer: Ryan Nicholson.
The first film from Plotdigger Films was Torched in 2004. Make-up effects artist and director, Ryan Nicholson then went on to produce several over the top gorefests such as Live Feed in 2006, Gutterballs in 2008, and the unwatchable Hanger in 2009. Nicholson has continued to progress behind the camera and his latest is from Vicious Circle Films entitled Bleading Lady (previously Star Vehicle). Here, Nicholson takes a stab at the horror genre, by cleverly turning the cliches of indie bloodfests in and upon themselves. The result is a laughfest, that slightly slows in the final act.
This title releases March 29th on DVD and the plot develops as a movie within a movie. Wes Craven's Scream film series developed in the same way,...

Gutterballs and Star Vehicle actor Dan Ellis tipped Dread off last night to his involvement in his latest Plotdigger Films project, The Murder Mack, as well as providing a one-sheet teaser for the feature, which revolves around two convicts whose friendship-made-in prison leads to an "an orgy of murder, mayhem, and torture" upon their release from the big house (according to the film’s PR).
Written and to be directed by Ryan (Gutterballs) Nicholson (the director will also star as ‘Roy’, one half of the sadistic duo, with Ellis producing and starring alongside him as ‘Larry’), The Murder Mack is prepping to go before cameras in Canada.

Ryan Nicholson of Plotdigger Films gave Fango the first look at the DVD cover art for his extreme gruefest Hanger (pictured), now set to hit disc November 17 from the new Breaking Glass company on their Vicious Circle genre label. When last we heard from Gutterballs and the upcoming Hanger’s Ryan Nicholson and Plotdigger Films, he and producer Aaron Au were hard at work readying Evil Feed, the sequel to Live Feed (see item here). Co-producer Dan Walton sent along the latest poster for Hanger, the third feature directed by makeup FX artist Ryan Nicholson after Live Feed and the recently released Gutterballs. You can see it below the cut.
Scripted by Nicholson and Patrick Coble, Hanger stars Debbie Rochon of Fango Radio, Nathan Dashwood, Dan Ellis, Ronald Patrick Thompson, Wade Gibb, Alastair Gamble and Candice Lewald in the story of an attempted abortion that goes horribly wrong: The surviving baby grows up to be a badly scarred killer who sets out for bloody revenge. In their follow-up to Gutterballs (coming on Tla DVD in January), moviemaker Ryan Nicholson and Plotdigger Films move away from the sterile bowling-alley environment and get down and dirty with Hanger. The movie just finished shooting in Surrey, BC, Canada (40 minutes from Vancouver).
The titular protagonist (pictured left, and played by Gutterballs’ Nathan Dashwood; see more exclusive pics below) is so named due to the horrifying manner in which he was birthed: with a wire coat hanger. Horribly disfigured as a result, he cuts a bloody path of revenge until he gets to the one who brought him into this world.
A Fango set visit finds writer (with Patrick Coble) and director Nicholson taking a break from his other job as a makeup FX artist (most recently on the Sci Fi channel’s Troglodyte), but this is anything but a rest. Working with a much shorter shooting schedule than his...

We just received word from indie film producer Dan Walton, the man behind Upcoming Horror Movies and the upcoming Macabre Con, that shooting on his next production, the Ryan Nicholson-helmed Hanger, is looking at a November start date.
Evidence of this prep was submitted in the form of some makeup tests done to actor Dan Ellis (Gutterballs, RetarDEAD), who stars as a character know only as The John. Little else is known about the film, save what the tagline reveals, which goes a little something like this:
Pulled into this world to take you out! A horrifying tale of revenge ... beginning with a back-alley abortion and ending with a bloodbath so vicious that it brings a new meaning to "an eye for eye". From pimps to dealers, from hookers and junkies ... Hanger washes the filth away with their own blood, cleaning the streets and making way for the ultimate showdown of good vs.
