Film4 has confirmed a 10% drop in its annual budget, reducing from £25m to £22.5m for January-December 2024.
“Film4 is the largest Psb [public service broadcasting] funder of independent film in the UK. Our budget is set annually, in line with Channel 4’s financials, to ensure we can best deliver sustainable, long-term support to the industry,” said a statement from Film4.
“We have recently had some of our most prolific and successful years, and we are committed to maintaining a similar level of support in the future, backing around 10-12 films per year, maintaining our cultural impact and continuing to champion the most distinctive and innovative filmmaking talent.

Yorgos Lanthimos is examining the kinds of cruelty in his latest film “Kinds of Kindness.”
The feature, which was originally titled “And”, marks Lanthimos’ eighth film and reunites the auteur with two-time Oscar winner Emma Stone following her recent “Poor Things” Best Actress win. Stone previously garnered her first Oscar after starring in Lanthimos’ “The Favourite.”
While the plot details for the Searchlight Pictures release remain elusive, we do know that “Kinds of Kindness” is an anthology film with three separate storylines that collide. Stone stars alongside her “Poor Things” co-stars Willem Dafoe and Margaret Qualley, plus Jesse Plemons, Hunter Schafer, Joe Alwyn, Hong Chau, and Mamoudou Athie.
“It’s great to be working again with Emma,” Lanthimos told The Guardian about the project. “It makes it so much easier to have someone there who trusts you so much, and who you trust so much.” The duo are next set...

Searchlight is wasting no time getting the next Yorgos Lanthimos film out there.
Less than a week after “Poor Things” won four Academy Awards include Best Actress for Emma Stone, distributor Searchlight Pictures has announced the release date for his next film, “Kinds of Kindness“: It will open in theaters June 21, 2024. A limited release will kick off the launch for Lanthimos’ eighth feature film, with a wider nationwide opening to follow.
The June 21 release almost certainly means that “Kinds of Kindness” will be ready for Cannes 2024 — and will potentially be his first feature to premiere on the Croisette since 2017’s “The Killing of a Sacred Deer.” His past Oscar winners “The Favourite” and “Poor Things” both went the way of Venice. The 2024 Cannes Film Festival runs May 14 through May 25.

Greta Gerwig tells me there’s “no resistance” from her about the possibility of Barbie 2.
The challenge for her she says, is how to tackle a follow-up movie. Initially, the filmmaker wasn’t “feeling” the idea of a sequel, but now she’s warm to such a situation. “I’m not dismissing it, I want to do it,” she says, but there’s a heck of a lot to discuss first with Mattel, Margot Robbie, Warner Bros Discovery, producer David Heyman and all of her creative collaborators.

Also, there’s rather a lot on her plate as she puts the architecture in place to shoot Narnia for Netflix, and Gerwig revealed that she’ll return to London to soon resume the very early stages of pre-production in the UK.

It was a good night for the UK at the 96th Oscars. Brits won in seven separate categories at the Dolby Theatre, with Christopher Nolan and Jonathan Glazer’s wins the highest profile.
Nolan scooped Best Director and Best Picture, the latter alongside his wife, Emma Thomas, for the night’s standout winner, Oppenheimer. Universal’s film about J. Robert Oppenheimer and his Manhattan Project took home seven statuettes, having been widely tipped for glory after a stellar awards season and handed Nolan his first Best Director win.
After thanking his wife and production partner, Emma Thomas, and others such as brother and Westworld creator Jonathan Nolan, Nolan added a sprinkle of hope to the sauce in a message to the Academy.
“Movies are just a little bit over 100 years old — I mean imagine being there 100 years into painting or theatre. We don’t know where this incredible journey is going from here,...

The 96th Academy Awards ceremony should be known as the Cannes Oscars, argues Cannes Film Festival director Thierry Frémaux.
He’s got a point.
Frémaux sipped a cocktail at the Charles Finch and Chanel Annual Pre-Oscar Dinner in the Polo Lounge at the Beverly Hills Hotel, and ticked off Justine Triet’s Anatomy of a Fall and Jonathan Glazer’s The Zone of Interest as films that played and won the top prizes at last May’s festival.
Michael Barker, Sony Picture Classics co-chair, helped Frémaux out by adding in Martin Scorsese’s The Killers of the Flower Moon, which also premiered on the Croisette.
“Here we are in March, and the top winners at last year’s Cannes are still in the conversation, and are here at the Oscars,” says Frémaux, giving himself a pat on the back.

Ollie Madden, director of Film4, is poised to expand his role to encompass TV drama commissioning as part of the ongoing restructuring at Film4’s UK broadcaster parent Channel 4.
Caroline Hollick, head of TV drama at Channel 4, is expected to leave the broadcaster according to Screen’s sister site Broadcast, and Madden is widely tipped to take on the top scripted role at the organisation, leading the division that orders TV series and backs films.
Channel 4 has previously confirmed the film and TV drama departments would continue to operate as independent teams with separate budgets but under the same leadership.

Exclusive: Dominic Sessa, the 21-year-old rising star, didn’t win a Supporting Actor BAFTA Award Sunday night — that went to Oppenheimer’s Robert Downey Jr. — but he did pick up his first post-The Holdovers role that will see him starring with Rose Byrne in director Stephanie Laing’s drama Tow.
This news was confirmed by several sources over the BAFTA Awards weekend where your intrepid columnist attended more soirées than is healthy. The trick though is to go teetotal and guzzle down fruit juice: cranberry with a tear-drop of orange juice is the mocktail du jour!
My Deadline colleague, international editor Andreas Wiseman, revealed last week that Byrne is expected to star in the true-story Tow.
Bryne will portray Amanda Ogle, a homeless woman who slept in her 1991 Toyota Camry, who entered into a 369-day legal battle against a towing company that had impounded her car after it had been stolen.

UK public service broadcaster Channel 4 has unveiled a suite of radical changes in an effort to cut costs and become a digital-first, streaming-focused broadcaster.
Headcount will reduce by 18%, which will result in around 200 redundancies and the closure of approximately 40 unfilled roles. The reduction will return the workforce to 2021 levels, when the number of employees was 1,044.
In the next few years, Channel 4 will move out of its iconic London headquarters on Horseferry Road in Victoria, where Film4 is also based. This is in line with Channel 4’s target of having 600 roles based in the nations and regions.

BAFTA revealed a lively film nominations list this morning full of talking points.
Among major surprises were the omissions of Killers Of The Flower Moon actress Lily Gladstone, who last week won a Golden Globe for her performance, and Martin Scorsese, Greta Gerwig and Yorgos Lanthimos from the Best Director category.
Killers Of The Flower Moon still scored an impressive nine nominations — though Leonardo DiCaprio did not make the cut — but Barbie fared less well. After garnering nine Golden Globe noms and converting in two categories, Warner Bros’ box office juggernaut made the cut in only five BAFTA categories today.
The picture is perhaps slightly less surprising given the context of a push BAFTA has made in recent years to foreground a greater diversity of content, including more British films. The organization has faced criticism from some that its film nominees in recent years have too closely mirrored the Oscars...

Yorgos Lanthimos’ next film is kind of three movies in one, according to the auteur.
Lanthimos’ “Kinds of Kindness” (originally titled “And”) was filmed in New Orleans while “Poor Things” was in VFX post-production in October 2022, and in case it wasn’t enough having two films back-to-back, the “Favourite” filmmaker revealed to The Guardian that “Kind of Kindness” is a trio of storylines.
“It’s a contemporary film, set in the U.S. — three different stories, with four or five actors who play one part in each story, so they all play three different parts. It was almost like making three films, really,” Lanthimos said. “It’s all shot and we have started editing.”
“Kinds of Kindness” reunites Lanthimos with “Poor Things” stars Emma Stone, Willem Dafoe, and Margaret Qualley, plus “The Favourite” actor Joe Alwyn. Jesse Plemons, Hong Chau, and Hunter Schafer mark their respective first films with Lanthimos as part of the cast.
