No lie: Peacock is ordering a second season of Based on a True Story.
The NBCUniversal-owned streamer has picked up the series, a comedic thriller from UCP and starring Kaley Cuoco (who also executive produces) and Chris Messina. The first season debuted in June and earned mostly favorable reviews; detailed viewing data is, per usual with streamers, not public, but the series did land in Nielsen’s top 10 rankings for the week of its premiere.
Based on a True Story is, in fact, based on (or at least partly inspired by) a true story, while also satirizing true crime tropes. The series stars Cuoco and Messina as Ava and Nathan, a down-on-their-luck couple who cross paths with an infamous serial killer in Los Angeles. Ava, a true crime obsessive, hits on the idea of making a podcast with the killer as a way out of their rut.

Cool air in the evenings, pumpkins on doorsteps, and Spirit of Halloween stores everywhere you look. Yes, it is the most wonderful time of the year for a certain set of us who like our weather settings left at “autumnal” and our genre of choice to be on the spooky side of things.
With that in mind, one of the most pleasurable things to do each October is curl up with a good horror movie and feel the goosebumps gather on the back of your neck. But how do you know if something is a good horror movie, exactly? You watch it for yourself, or you trust the experts, of course! For instance, the most popular streaming service in the world, Netflix, offers a cornucopia of chillers, but which are the ones that might be worth your time? Our staff has put their heads together and come up with the below list.

Around this time every year, I tend to enjoy putting on Steven Spielberg’s Jaws. In this household it’s as annual a hallmark of summer as warm breezes, smoking meat on the barbecue, and blasts of chlorine water. However, it is too easy to fall into the trap of thinking Spielberg had the first and last word in the sounds of shrieking at the beach.
In truth, there are many great summertime chillers that make your blood run cold, and the sand turn to ice between your toes, no matter how hot the temperature is. Hence why we here at Den of Geek have put our heads together to figure what are the absolute best beachside horror movies (other than the obvious one) that will make you a “lake person” for the rest of your life. Enjoy!

Playing a man who gets entangled in a murder investigation because his wife (Kaley Cuoco) is obsessed with true crime, “Based on a True Story” kind of hits close to home for Chris Messina. When he was a kid, he and a friend actually may have actually discovered a crime scene.
“I grew up in Northport, Long Island,” Messina told Variety at the Peacock series’ premiere Thursday at the Pacific Design Center in West Hollywood. “I grew up on Makamah Road, about a block from the Long Island Sound. A buddy and I walked to the Sound and – it was very ‘Stand By Me’ – we found a hand that washed up on the beach.”
They immediately called the cops. “We had to report it,” Messina recalled. “I was pretending to be River Phoenix in ‘Stand By Me.’”

The ’47 Meters Down’ Shark Franchise Has Made Stars Like Mandy Moore and John Corbett Much Wealthier
The 2017 horror survival film 47 Meters Down and its underrated sequel made considerably more than the studio expected. In fact, Dimension Films had such little faith in the first movie that they planned to release it straight to DVD. Fortunately, they sold the rights to Entertainment Studios instead, which gave the horror movie a chance in theaters, where it proved to be a major success.

Shark-attack horror movies are having a resurgence, and much of this is due to the surprising success of the 2017 movie 47 Meters Down. Two years after its release, a sequel was unveiled. Now that 47 Meters Down: Uncaged is on Netflix, more viewers are discovering the underwater adventure.
With a star-studded cast and incredible cinematography, 47 Meters Down: Uncaged is a horror fan favorite. Fans who want to retrace the steps of the film’s cast can even visit some of the locations featured in 47 Meters Down: Uncaged — although they shouldn’t expect to see terrifying sharks.

Between The Vampire Diaries and The Originals, it’s clear these shows don’t shy away from melodrama. Characters say what they mean, or at least loudly lie about it in a way that makes their intentions clear to the viewer. But as fans revisit both shows, they’re finding a lot more to chew on than a first viewing implies, especially regarding Klaus Mikaelson.
Klaus’ romantic life was always fraught. He always leaned toward a particular type of woman for his significant romances. And some fans are convinced that there are deep-seated, familial reasons for all that.
Did Klaus Mikaelson really have a thing for women who look like his sister?
Klaus became a huge part of The Vampire Diaries extended universe. He carried The Originals, and even made appearances in the latest spinoff, Legacies. Actor Joseph Morgan earned that status by bringing more to the character than there was on the page.

More than 50,000 runners hit the streets today for the New York City Marathon, challenging not only the 26.2 mile course, but braving the unseasonably warm weather, which climbed into the 70s.
While most of the runners were fairly anonymous amateurs, there were also some familiar faces taking on the marathon.
Ultimately, Kenyan Evans Chebet won the race, as front-runner Daniel do Nascimento of Brazil cramped up and collapsed on the course because of the heat. While the temperature in New York may not seem excessive, warm weather is hard in an ultra long race, as the body begins diverting blood and sweat in an effort to keep cool. That speeds up dehydration and can cause cramping.

Director Scott Mann’s thriller Fall, which stars Grace Caroline Currey (a.k.a. Grace Fulton, Shazam!) and Virginia Gardner (Halloween 2018) as a pair of characters who get stuck at the top of a 2000 foot tall radio tower, was given a theatrical release back in August and can now be viewed on Amazon or purchased on Blu-ray or DVD (order it Here). One viewer who caught up with the movie on Amazon was legendary author Stephen King – and he was so impressed with it, he took to social media to say he wished he had been the one who wrote it!
King tweeted, “Fall: Tight, terrific, and very, very scary. Reminded me a bit of Duel. Wish I’d written it.”

All the long dark evenings are all the better to hunker down and catch up on your horror movie watching. We have scoured Netflix back catalogue to pick out the best horror movies. Weirdly, the streamer hasn’t actually added any great new horror content this month (unless you count Hotel Transylvania 2) but fortunately there’s a great selection on the service already to choose from. Joseph Morgan played Klaus Mikaelson to perfection for seven years across The Vampire Diaries and its spinoff, The Originals.
Recent social media posts have left fans wondering whether he will appear in the forthcoming series finale of Legacies following its cancellation.
The third series in The Vampire Diaries Universe has featured plenty of faces from the past, and fans have been begging for more Klaus content since The Originals Season 5 Episode 13.
If you watch The Originals online, you know Klaus was killed off in the final scene of the New Orleans-set drama.
Morgan took to social media Wednesday to address the speculation.

“First of all, I haven’t seen any cast from the Tvdu in years, not in person at least, I promise you that,” Morgan tweeted.
“All this speculation is gonna drive you crazy."

“Legacies” is coming to an end at The CW after four seasons, TheWrap has learned.
The Season 4 finale is set to air on June 16. The end of the series also means the conclusion of the network’s “Vampire Diaries” franchise, at least for now.
Set in The Salvatore Boarding School for the Young & Gifted, and within “The Vampire Diaries” universe, The CW’s “Legacies” debuted in 2018. The show tells the ongoing story of a new generation of supernatural students as they learn what it means to be special in a society that wouldn’t understand their gifts.
The series stars Danielle Rose Russell as Hope Mikaelson, Jenny Boyd as Lizzie Saltzman, the now-exited Kaylee Bryant as Josie Saltzman, Quincy Fouse as Milton “Mg” Greasley, Aria Shahghasemi as Landon Kirby, Peyton Alex Smith as Rafael, Chris Lee as Kaleb, Leo Howard as Ethan Mac and Ben Levin as Jed, with Matthew Davis as Alaric Saltzman.

Four years after leaving the French Quarter behind, Charles Michael Davis is bringing Marcel Gerard back to New Orleans on Thursday’s Legacies. And as he tells TVLine, his former Originals co-star Danielle Rose Russell had the perfect response to his return: “I would have thought you’d have been back sooner.”
Davis makes his Legacies debut alongside Nathaniel Buzolic, who’s also appearing on the spinoff for the first time. They’re joined by returning guest stars Claire Holt and Riley Voelkel, officially making this the largest Mikaelson family reunion since The Originals ended in 2018.

Saving Hope will be a tough mission.
If you watch Legacies online, you know that Klaus and Hayley's daughter recently turned her humanity off as she activated her tribrid abilities.
In doing so, a God named Ken is coming after her to reclaim his status as the most powerful being in all the world.
On Legacies Season 4 Episode 15, Freya (Riley Voelkel), Rebekah (Claire Holt), Marcel (Charles Michael Davis), and Kol (Nathaniel Buzzolic) return, presumably to help save their niece.
"Welcome home, little one," Rebekah says to a clearly surprised Hope, who finds herself back in New Orleans.f
If you watch Legacies online, you know Hope threatened her aunt the last time they crossed paths, telling her to make sure none of the family tried to stop her.
"Why won't you just go away?" Hope complains in one scene, leading to the following response from Rebekah.

"Kaleb (Chris Lee) wants to introduce Cleo (Omono Okojie) to his world, including those who had the most profound influence on his path," the logline continues.

She first dove into Hollywood as a mermaid on H20: Just Add Water, before playing a vampire across several years on The Vampire Diaries and The Originals. It’s not easy to reboot a movie franchise, especially one which is close to 20 years old and based on a video game series that’s 25 years old.
But when it came to tackling a new iteration of Constantin/Screen Gems’ Resident Evil after longtime collaborators filmmaker Paul W.S. Anderson and star Milla Jovovich hung up their guns, British genre filmmaker Johannes Roberts saw the opportunity to take the zombie shooter series back to its roots — an angle that has fans of the game quite stoked. The pic opens wide November 24.
You can listen to our intriguing conversation with Roberts here:
While the previous Resident Evil movies through six installments developed a following of their own apart from the fans of the Capcom video game, the films were known for their flashy sci-fi style. It looks like viewers are checking back into The CW's Legacies.
Legacies Season 4 Episode 5 managed 690,000 viewers -- a rise of 64% week-to-week.
The total viewer tally is the highest for the show since the beginning of its third season.
In the demo, the show was steady at a 0.1 rating.
The highly-anticipated episode brought Claire Holt back as Rebekah Mikaelson, so a bump was expected.
Walker, meanwhile, took a minor hit, slipping to 880,000 viewers and a 0.1 rating in the demo.
Over on ABC, Station 19 (4.4 million/0.6 rating) was steady with its latest crossover.
Grey's Anatomy inched up a tenth to 4.6 million viewers and a 0.7 rating.
Big Sky was steady at 2.7 million viewers and a 0.3 rating in the demo. The move to Thursdays has not been positive for the drama.
NBC's The Blacklist (2.9 million/0.3 rating), Svu (3.6 million/0.6 rating), and Organized Crime (2.9 million/0.5 rating) were all steady with their most recent numbers.

Hope Mikaelson is her father's daughter.
Legacies Season 4 Episode 5 lifted the lid on the true extent of her attack on Alaric, delved deeper into her machinations, and brought another Mikaelson into the fold.
Claire Holt flawlessly slipped back into the role of Rebekah, and I only hope it leads to more appearances.
Holt exited The Originals during its first season as a regular and went on to appear sporadically when it made sense to the plot, so hopefully, we get a similar thing going on here.
Rebekah daggering Hope was something I thought Hope would do to her. If you watched The Vampire Diaries and The Originals, you know Klaus loved to be in control of his family, regularly daggering them and keeping them in coffins.
Rebekah daggering Hope also helped viewers understand that the process of daggering is no longer the same, not when you're dealing with the Tribrid.

Legacies is headed in an exciting direction, and I only hope the show continues with this level of storytelling.
Legacies Season 4 Episode 4 excelled because the plot moved ahead significantly, with Hope finally becoming the tribrid, meaning she has finally unlocked the full extent of her abilities.
The moral dilemma she had about whether to find peace or return to the world and defeat Malivore was the perfect way to highlight just how difficult Hope's life has been since the deaths of her loved ones.
Choosing peace would have been easy, and after the chat with Ted about whether Klaus would ever find happiness, it was apparent she would prefer to save her friends and the people of Mystic Falls.
From a technical standpoint, the scenes of Hope's transition into this being first teased on The Vampire Diaries, were handled very well. The immediate change in the sky makes me think that Hope has upset nature.

Legacies is finally going there.
Hope Mikaelson is dead, and she has a big decision to make.
Legacies Season 4 Episode 4 was supposed to be the Legacies Season 3 finale, so we should expect many big swings to shake things up.
If you watch Legacies online, you know Freya stopped by to help Hope with her transition to becoming the most powerful being in the world.
The issue is, Hope has the opportunity to sail off to peace and potentially reunite with her mother.
She can also choose to return as the Tribrid and defeat Malivore.
A lot is riding on "See You on the Other Side," and it seems like Hope will have a group of people on their way to help.
It's fitting that the young woman who has felt so alone in life has a whole group of people putting their lives on the line to help her.
Then again,...

Hope Mikaelson's days might be numbered, but that doesn't mean the end of her existence.
It means dying to activate her vampire side to become a tribrid, something the franchise has been building toward ever since the end of The Originals.
Legacies Season 4 Episode 3 is titled "We All Knew This Day Was Coming," which could hint at the child of Hayley and Klaus revealing her plan, but this show has proven to do the opposite of what we expect.
In the trailer for the installment, we see Hope unimpressed about not being told the truth by those closest to her.
As a result, she goes rogue, which could lead to some of the most shocking twists and turns to date.
We see many characters crying in the teaser, and Dorian declaring that it's happening, which is likely in reference to Malivore's escape.
Whether the show will finally kill off the...

Secrets can tear relationships apart.
Hope relinquished control on Legacies Season 4 Episode 2 to allow the Super Squad time to help restore order, but her decision proved to be fateful.
Bringing Clark into the mix was not the best idea, but you need to make some tough decisions with your back against the wall and a ruthless killer that can erase everyone from existence.
If you watch Legacies online, you know Clark has been a character who plays in the gray area, meaning we've never been able to understand his true intentions, but a part of him recognized that Hope was genuine when she followed through on her end of the deal.
She could have threatened him into leaving Mystic Falls, but instead, she gave him what was promised and a means of escape. That's pretty commendable and the opposite of what her father would have done if he was still around to scheme.

Another Mikaelson is making their way back to Mystic Falls.
Claire Holt, who played Rebekah on The Vampire Diaries and The Originals is set to appear in a new episode of Legacies next month.
According to TV Line, the episode will find Rebekah trying to get through to Hope after tracking her down.
“Hope is tracked down by the one person who could help her — Rebekah Mikaelson,” reads the episode’s official synopsis.
“Rebekah is fearful of what path Hope has chosen but makes every effort to get through to her."
"Josie and Lizzie hold out hope in a seemingly dire situation as Mg figures out what he can do to help. Meanwhile, Kaleb wants to set things right and turns to Cleo for guidance."
This development is especially intriguing because The CW unveiled a poster that declared "Hope Must Die," ahead of last week's season premiere.
