If you haven’t been living under a rock for the past three decades then you will know that Austin is a bastion for great music, more notably, their punk scene. One of the town’s most exciting export, Institute, have came out with their debut record, “Catharsis”, and it is bleak as fuck.Comprised of ex-members of bands like Glue, Wiccans, Blotter and Back to Back, together as Institute they take their Hardcore stylings and pushes their sound into darker, more austere territory. This may not be a new thing, 80’s groups like Husker Du or Mission of Burma abandoned their Hardcore […]...

Foo Fighters are taking America by storm. In the wake of "Sonic Highways'" Nov. 10 release, Dave Grohl, Taylor Hawkins, Chris Shiflett, Nate Mendel and Pat Smear have slated their largest North American tour to date for the summer and fall of 2015, the band announced today. The group previously announced a massive 20th anniversary concert at Rfk Stadium in Washington D.C. on July 4, in addition to a show at Chicago's famous Wrigley Field on August 29. British hard rockers Royal Blood will support during the July/August run of dates, while post-punk pioneers Mission of Burma are making a special appearance at the July 18 show in Boston's Fenway Park. To help fend off "Scalper-bots programmed to clog online queues and snatch up huge amounts of tickets to resell them," the tour pre-sale begins exclusively at box offices beginning this Saturday at 10am, and online the following Monday (Dec. 1). General sales...

Tim Sommer, rock raconteur extraordinaire, recently wrote a playlist for Tim Broun's blog Stupefaction. (#1 choice shown above.) Mr. Sommer has lately been writing a daily column in The Brooklyn Bugle (motto: "On the Web because paper is expensive") that immediately became the one thing that I read every day, just so I can enjoy his combination of cultural erudition and lunatic whimsy. In one of his Bugle columns he wrote about making the list. And in that article he posited other approaches/lists that I found myself wishing he had made as well. But he's undoubtedly got better things to do with his time. I apparently do not, however (okay, I do, I just have poor impulse control), and made my own lists based on his criteria.
And here they are. I could have gone thirty deep on each of these lists just as he did on Stupefaction (well, maybe...

Seattle’s Bumbershoot festival, held Aug. 30-Sept. 1, at Seattle Center, will have a little something for everyone this year. Headliners include veteran rockers Elvis Costello & The Imposters and The Replacements, rap acts J. Cole and Wu-Tang Clan, and relative newcomers Foster the People and The Head and The Heart. Also on the diverse bill are Panic! At the Disco, Schoolboy Q, Capital Cities, Neon Trees, The Afghan Whigs, Hurray for the Riff Raff, Mission of Burma, Los Lobos, Bootsy Collins, The Both, Walk the Moon, The Dismemberment Plan, Real Estate, and about 75 other acts. Of particular interest are Big Star’s Third, a collection of artists who come together to play the rock band’s third album, a cult favorite known as “Third” and “Sister Lovers.” The collective usually includes Big Star drummer Jody Stephens as well as others either affiliated with Big Star or acolytes. Here’s what the...

If you are planning a wedding anytime soon, we highly suggest you befriend Questlove immediately. Not only can the guy play the drums for your processional and DJ the reception, he can also apparently photograph the event like a boss, as you can see from the photos he tweeted from last weekend’s wedding of Amber Tamblyn and David Cross. Of course, the fact that the bride wore a stunning, canary-yellow dress; the whole thing went down in the mountains, with the leaves changing; and the guests included a few photogenic folks like America Ferrera, Blake Lively, Ryan Reynolds, Jason Ritter, Kristen Schaal and Amy Poehler might have helped him quite a bit.
We absolutely love the Roots drummer for letting us feel like we were there — you can almost hear Yo La Tengo and Mission of Burma playing, live, at the reception. His Instagram essay begins with a pic...

From the early days of The Moving Parts and 1979′s “Peking Spring”, Mission of Burma have always been either a little ahead or behind of the curve. They burst onto the American punk scene at a time when if you weren’t hardcore, you weren’t punk rock. While Henry Rollins was singing “Gimmie Some More”, Clint Conley was singing about “Progress”. While everyone was holding fast to the three chord punk ethos, Burma opted for music theory and time signature changes; even to this day Peter Prescott’s drumming is something to marveled at. They were one of the first bands to alter their sound with magnetic tape loops.

We all know the story by now, but it bears repeating now that we’re on album number four in Mission of Burma’s impressive second act. Taking a 20-year hiatus would be enough to upend most bands—or, at the very least, render them former shells of themselves—but Mission of Burma continues to make some truly glorious noise on Unsound. By today’s standards this new collection might not come off as particularly groundbreaking, but it doesn’t mean it’s not a big and ferocious ball of ear candy. And there aren’t many bands out there so ably using their gray matter to make...

I interviewed Zoe Lund for the second issue of Filmmaker, back when we put Abel Ferrara’s Bad Lieutenant on the cover. She was the screenwriter, and she also appeared in one of the film’s most memorable scenes. Previously, Lund starred in a number of films, including Ferrara’s breakthrough, Ms. 45. Lund was fascinating, beautiful, talented, and she had a unique and powerful charisma. She died in Paris in 1999.
Recently I ran into filmmaker and Slamdance co-founder Paul Rachman, and he told me about the series of short documentary films he’s making about Lund. He agreed to answer a few questions about Lund, the project and himself for Filmmaker and to give our readers a sneak peek at the latest in the series.
Filmmaker: When did you first meet Zoe, and when did you first decide to make this series of films?

Mission of Burma: Signals, Calls, and Marches (Ace of Hearts)
It's apt that one of the great American indie albums was released on Independence Day.
In 1980, Mission of Burma had caused a little stir with a 7" single: "Academy Fight Song"/"Max Ernst." The A-side was an instant classic among the few people who heard it, but it was the follow-up, the six-song Ep Signals, Calls, and Marches (excellent example of the serial comma!) that established the quartet in the forefront of the American indie-rock scene.

With a distinct lack of interesting fare in this chunk of the year, we came up with the bright idea of highlighting the careers of directors never before discussed in Sound on Sight’s relatively long history. The first name to come up: Preston Sturges, who became one of the very first writers in Hollywood to gain enough clout to direct his own pictures, ultimately becoming powerful enough to run afoul of the ruthless studio system. His comedies broke new ground in tonal complexity and freewheeling transcendence of genre (as well as coy subversion of the Hays code). Justine, Derek and Simon discuss three of his best-loved movies: The Lady Eve, Sullivan’s Travels, and Unfaithfully Yours.

Cee-Lo's curse-happy kiss-off single "F--- You" continues to light up the Internet (as of this morning, the original video had logged over 2.6 million views) and the Goodie Mob member and Gnarls Barkley frontman is capitalizing on his sudden viral ubiquity. He told Entertainment Weekly that he plans on putting together a second video for the clip (probably one that didn't consist entirely of the lyrics to the song) and a radio edit that will be called "Forget You." That's a good call for Cee-Lo, as it will give him the opportunity to truly capitalize on the success of the song (at the moment, you can't even buy it on iTunes), but it will be slightly disappointing that the song will become a victim to the dreaded "radio edit."

Three albums into its reformation—that’s more albums than it released the first time around, in the early ’80s—it’s time for Mission Of Burma to lose steam. The band’s improbable return to form began with 2004’s ONoffON, then took another surprising turn with 2006’s The Obliterati, a stunningly good album that stood with the band’s acknowledged classics, Vs. and Signals, Calls And Marches. Mission Of Burma not only sounded great for a reunited group of rock dudes well into middle age, but also for a rock group, period. By its nature, that kind ...
