THR reports that Haunted Mansion director Justin Simien to set to helm Heist: Or How to Steal a Planet, a sci-fi crime thriller based on the comic series by Paul Tobin and Arjuna Susini.
The comic is “set on the planet Heist, home to billions of the worst criminals in the galaxy. The ruling pan-galactic government has no idea what to do with the planet, but a conman named Glane Breld and his band of thieves know exactly what to do with Heist: steal it. The story follows Breld on his madcap scheme to pull off the biggest heist in the history of the galaxy.” I’m not too familiar with the comic series, but that sounds like fun. Christopher Yost, best known for Thor: Ragnarok and The Mandalorian, will pen the script.

Billy Dee Williams, who originated the role of Lando Calrissian in the “Star Wars” franchise, spoke to Radio Times about Donald Glover’s portrayal of the smooth-talking smuggler turned rebel hero.
“I had a nice little lunch with him. He’s a delightful young man. Extremely talented,” Williams said. “But I don’t see him… I mean, when it comes to Lando Calrissian there’s only one Lando Calrissian. I created that character.”
Williams also shared the only advice he gave Glover about playing Lando: “I told him to be charming – two words! That’s all I needed to tell him. That’s all I could think of.”
Glover made his debut as a young Lando in the 2018 “Star Wars” prequel “Solo.” A Lando Calrissian limited series for Disney+ was first announced in 2020, with “Dear White People” creator Justin Simien attached to the project. News then broke in July 2023 that...

Justin Simien is frustrated that 'Haunted Mansion' was released in the shadow of 'Barbenheimer'.The 40-year-old filmmaker helmed the Disney picture that came out just a week after the two blockbusters and thinks the scheduling contributed to the picture's disappointing box office performance.Justin told The Wrap: "I think the release date was really tough – I saw 'Barbie' coming from miles away. I was disappointed by some aspects of our release, but I was not really surprised."He continued: "There's a lot of folks in the industry that just kept saying, 'I don't know' and 'That'll probably not be as big as it sounds like.' And I was like, '(Barbie) is going to be huge'."What 'Oppenheimer' did so well – the marketing for 'Oppenheimer' embraced the fact that 'Barbie' was coming with this gigantic, cultural juggernaut. “Haunted Mansion” director Justin Simien is still haunted by the fact that the Disney release plan for his film did not address being in the shadow of “Barbenheimer.”
Disney’s “Haunted Mansion” premiered in theaters July 28, one week after the shared release date of “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer.” Both films were met with massive success; “Barbie” especially made history at Warner Bros. as a $1 billion blockbuster helmed by Greta Gerwig. Family-friendly film “Haunted Mansion” grossed $115 million at the global box office comparatively.
“I think the release date was really tough — I saw ‘Barbie’ coming from miles away,” Simien told The Wrap. “I was disappointed by some aspects of our release, but I was not really surprised.”

Our latest Blu-ray round-up is surprisingly horror-heavy this week! With the notable exception of Greta Gerwig's bright, bubbly "Barbie," every other film featured this week is part of the horror genre. Of course, that shouldn't be too surprising — this is spooky season, after all. Below, you'll find looks at not one but two very different haunted house movies, a new horror hit from A24, a vampire box office flop, and, as already mentioned, a trip to Barbieland. So let's dive in, and as always, I urge you to keep spinning those discs! Streaming comes and goes, but physical media is forever.

“Haunted Mansion” director Justin Simien opened up about the rollout of his Lakeith Stanfield-led film, and how the events of Summer 2023 may have impacted its success. “I think the release date was really tough — I saw ‘Barbie’ coming from miles away,” Simien said of “Haunted Mansion’s” theatrical debut in an interview with TheWrap ahead of his film’s home release. “I was disappointed by some aspects of our release, but I was not really surprised.”
SAG-AFTRA authorized its strike on July 14, two weeks before “Haunted Mansion’s” July 28 release date. That meant none of the star-studded cast — including Lakeith Stanfield, Rosario Dawson, Tiffany Haddish, Owen Wilson and more — could promote the film.
Then on July 21 — one week before release — “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” dropped, detonating the doors of the box office and raking in multimillions (“Barbie” made $162 million their opening weekend and “Oppenheimer” made $82.4 million.)

“Queer for Fear” executive producer Bryan Fuller has been sued for alleged sexual harassment and sexual assault on the set of the 2021 Shudder docuseries. An attorney for the “Hannibal” creator said he intends to countersue for defamation and malicious prosecution.
Sam Wineman, a producer on the series about the history of LGBTQ characters and actors in horror movies, claimed that from 2020 to 2022, Fuller “cultivated and maintained a hostile work environment” that included “harassment, discrimination, sexual harassment, sexual assault and retaliation.”
In Wineman’s suit, which filed last week in Los Angeles Superior Court, he alleged that “Mr. Fuller sexually assaulted plaintiff several times” throughout the production of the series. Disney Entertainment TV is set to reinstate overall deals for creatives that were suspended during the WGA strike as early as Thursday, TheWrap has learned.
In mid-September, the company paused overall and first look deals across its subsidiaries, with Billy Porter, Yara Shahidi, Gina Rodriguez, “This Is Us” alum Milo Ventimiglia and Mandy Moore, “Rebel” executive producer Marc Webb, “The Bear” EP Hiro Murai and FX Productions’ Stacey Sher among those impacted.
While Disney Entertainment TV had paused the deals, the studio planned to continue paying for the deals in order to provide salaries for assistants through the end of 2023, as well as cover salaries for development executives through the first week of October 2023, an individual with knowledge of the decision told TheWrap at the time.

For the first time since 2019 (hello fidget spinners!) Film Independent’s autumnal industry gathering—the Film Independent Forum—will be taking entirely live in person at its traditional home, the Directors Guild of America in Los Angeles. Many credit Disney’s Haunted Mansion, as well as the mainstreaming of the horror genre and the increasing commodification of Halloween, for creating the modern haunted house industry. And yet, the movies based on the ride will leave you with the same question: Does Disney even understand its most popular attraction?
The Haunted Mansion is essentially a “ghoul tour,” dating back to the 19th century–to Madame Tussaud’s gruesomely guillotined aristocrats and the exaggerated torture porn found onstage in the Grand Guignol. The public has always–and will always–pay good money to be frightened out of their wits. Walt Disney, a consummate showman, knew this from the birth of his career; Mickey Mouse followed his 1928 debut in Steamboat Willie with a trio of horror shorts: the creepy Haunted House, (1929), The Mad Doctor (a Frankenstein spin-off) and The Gorilla Mystery (no less than a Disney Murders of Rue Morgue...

Apple has suspended additional overall and first-look deals with creators as the Writers Guild and Screen Actors Guild strikes continue, an individual with knowledge told TheWrap. Those affected are non-writing producers who no longer have projects moving forward or in later stages of production.
The suspended deals include those with Adam McKay’s Hyperobject Industries and Natalie Portman’s MountainA. However, other deals for projects where producers can continue to engage in non-writing, non-acting work are continuing.
That includes Martin Scorsese’s deal as he finishes “Killers of the Flower Moon,” set for release next month and already screening for critics. Another deal still in place is that with Tom Hanks’ Playtone, producers of the upcoming “Masters of the Air” limited series for Apple TV+.
Apple did not immediately return a request for comment.
An overall deal is an agreement between a studio and a production company or creative talent.

What have we here? Just more news about the long-gestating “Star Wars” project focused on the galaxy far, far away’s favorite rapscallion, Lando Calrissian. According to Stephen Glover – who was working on the Lando script with his brother, Lando actor Donald Glover – the idea is to make a feature film about the character, rather than a series for Disney+ as previously announced.
Multiple trade outlets confirmed the news, with the stipulation that any movement on the screenplay has to wait until the current writers’ and actors’ strikes have come to an end.
Donald Glover first played Lando in 2018’s “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” and while the film was poorly received, his portrayal of the character first made famous by Billy Dee Williams was hailed as a high point. Two years later, in 2020, Disney announced Lando would live on as a Disney+ series with “Dear White People” showrunner Justin Simien...

2018's "Solo: A Star Wars Story" may not have done too well at the box office, but one enduring highlight from it is Donald Glover's performance as Lando Calrissian. The smooth-talking, cape-wearing smuggler effortlessly stole every scene he was in, which is why conversations about a Lando-focused spinoff have been swirling for years.
In December 2020, Disney announced that a series centered around Lando was in the works with "Haunted Mansion" director Justin Simien as showrunner. However, Simien wound up exiting the project and Donald and his brother, Stephen Glover, took over, per The Hollywood Reporter. During a Sept. 14 appearance on the podcast "Pablo Torre Finds Out," Stephen revealed that the project is now a movie being made in partnership with Lucasfilm. Lucasfilm has confirmed that Donald Glover and his brother Stephen’s project based on the Star Wars character Lando Calrissian will be a film, not a television series, as previously reported.
The news came on Thursday via Variety, which received the confirmation from Lucasfilm. Donald Glover is shifting gears with his planned Disney+ Lando series. The project is now being developed as a film for Lucasfilm, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
Glover’s brother, Stephen Glover, was working on the project with Donald before the writers strike began in May, and during an appearance on the Pablo Torre Finds Out podcast posted Thursday, revealed the latest plans were to make a film. The project is on hold currently amid the dual writer and actors strike.
Donald Glover played Lando Calrissian in 2018’s Solo: A Star Wars Story. The film was a box office bomb, but Glover earned a strong response for his work as the character — and in December 2020, Disney announced the series was in the works.
Justin Simien (Haunted Mansion) was initially tapped to develop series, but exited prior to Donald and Stephen Glover taking over writing duties. That was when the project morphed into a feature.

But now there’s new intrigue on the “Lando” front, with Stephen hinting that the project he and Donald are working on may no longer be series. News broke in July that Donald and Stephen Glover had been tapped by Disney and Lucasfilm to replace Justin Simien as the writers of a new “Lando” television series on Disney+. But not so fast. The project is actually being developed as a “Lando” movie, Lucasfilm confirmed to Variety. Glover debuted as a young Lando Calrissian in the 2017 “Star Wars” tentpole “Solo,” which was a notable box office disappointment for Disney and Lucasfilm.
Stephen Glover first dropped the news of a “Lando” movie on a recent appearance on the “Pablo Torre Finds Out” podcast, telling the host, “It’s not even a show…the idea right now is to do a movie. Right now, because of the strike, it’s kind of like telephone, all of the information.” That’s all the info Stephen could provide. Lucasfilm confirmed the news afterwards.

Haunted Mansion didn’t have the strongest of showings this summer. Part of it is attributed to the scheduled release date. It was screened in theaters in the direct wake of the Barbenheimer phenomenon. This, unfortunately, made the Disney comedy a victim of the Barbie and Oppenheimer dual release that dominated the summer box office. Another element that some may draw from is the fact that it is a horror-themed film (albeit family-friendly) that is released in the summertime when people are less likely to gravitate towards the macabre.
However, there is a fail-safe for the underperformed film to find a new audience as the fall movie season starts, and Disney has just announced the premiere date for the home video release of Haunted Mansion, which makes it available for consumers in time for Halloween. The Justin Simien film will be available for home viewing on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray,...

CBS Studios has suspended its term deals with three major producers, TheWrap has learned. Those impacted include the talk show host and celebrity Dr. Phil McGraw, “Kingdom Revolution”/”Flamin’ Hot” producer DeVon Franklin and “Dynasty”/”Nancy Drew” executive producer Lis Rowinski.
CBS will continue to cover the salary and benefits for the impacted assistants through the end of the strike or the end of 2023, an insider familiar with the deals told TheWrap. That timeline will depend on which comes first. Additionally, the term deals that haven’t been suspended by CBS Studios involve either alternative, unscripted or animated projects or some other non-wga activity.
Representatives for Franklin and Rowinski confirmed this story. However, representatives for McGraw did not respond by the time of publication.
CBS Studios declined to comment on this story.

Soon, fans of the Haunted Mansion won't have to take a trip to Disneyland to experience a scary ride. During the Walt Disney Studios Showcase, a presentation at this year's Destination D23, it was revealed that "Haunted Mansion" will soon be coming to home media beginning on October 4.
"Haunted Mansion" is based on the eponymous theme park ride, a staple of Disneyland since 1969. The film, directed by Justin Simien ("Dear White People"), features single mom Gabbie (Rosario Dawson) moving into the haunted Gracey Manor in New Orleans with her son. Soon, they run afoul of the ghosts, such as the Hatbox Ghost (Jared Leto) and the decapitated Madame Leota (Jamie Lee Curtis), now imprisoned in a crystal ball. So, they recruit a team of priests, academics, and psychics to exorcise the Manor.
"Haunted Mansion" coming to home media in October sounds like Disney learning its lesson from releasing the film theatrically in July.
