Hot Chip have returned with “Fire of Mercy,” a new single featuring Yunè Pinku. Watch the visualizer for the song below.
With inquisitive lyrics like, “Do you ever stop believing/ In the things that make you feel like you?,” the new track shows off Hot Chip’s ability to explore thoughtful themes in a grooving, electronic setting. Beneath an infectious vocal melody, layers of bustling drums and samples create a rhythmic engine, elevating the tune to a cruising altitude of “vibey.”
As for the song’s meaning, the band’s Joe Goddard explained: “‘Fire of Mercy’ relates to the central concept of William Blake’s Songs of Experience — it bemoans the corruption that inevitably comes from adulthood and longs for a return to the purity of childhood.” For her part, Pinku added: “Massive honor to work with Hot Chip, as they’re huge legends within the electronic world. Michael Stipe, Chvrches, and Coldplay are just a few of over 60 artists who’ve contributed to the 2023 iteration of EarthPercent’s annual Earth Day compilation album. Proceeds will benefit the Brian Eno-founded charity’s grant giving program, which directly benefits organizations fighting the ongoing climate crisis.
Stipe — a frequent eco-advocate — contributes the track “Give Me a Hand,” a moody art-pop number featuring guest vocals from folk singer and disability advocate Gaelynn Lea. Meanwhile, Chvrches reunite with their pal Robert Smith of The Cure for a rendition of their song “How Not to Drown,” recorded live at the Brixton Academy. Coldplay tap H.E.R. for another live track, this one being their ballad “Let Somebody Go” at the River Plate.
Also featured on the compilation are Eno, Dry Cleaning, dodie, Bring Me the Horizon, Julia Holter, Mystery Jets, and many more. Stream the album via Bandcamp below.

The Glastonbury 2023 headliners have been announced by Emily Eavis.
The festival’s co-organiser shared the news in an article discussing “pipeline” problems related to the all-male headlining line-up.
Joining Elton John will be Arctic Monkeys on the Friday, headlining for their third time, with Guns N’ Roses playing the Saturday slot.
Eavis said that Guns N’ Roses replaced a female singer who “changed her touring plans”.
While Eavis didn’t name names, it’s strongly suspected she was alluding to Taylor Swift, who was originally set to perform in 2020 when the festival was cancelled due to Covid.
However, Eavis expressed excitement about the “Sweet Child O’ Mine” rockers’ Glastonbury debut, telling The Guardian: “They’ll be brilliant and provide something totally different to the rest of the headliners.”
She said that Lizzo will “open” for the band, with the “About Damn Time” singer receiving joint headline billing on the poster.

Hot Chip have teamed up with Jarvis Cocker for “Straight to the Morning,” a disco track inspired by Dua Lipa.
The clip features a group of teenage girls indulging themselves while their parents are away, making smoothies out of whipped cream and cereal, breaking vases, and having mattress fights. Cocker appears on their karaoke screen, dancing in kaleidoscopic colors: “I’ll pick you up at half-past 10/I’ll see you move by 11.”

In 2014, attendance had fallen sharply at Trópico, a Mexican music festival held in the resort city of Acapulco. The festival was only in its second year, and after 43 students disappeared in the nearby city of Iguala a few months prior, a large number of festivalgoers had the same thought: stay home.
But at one point during the three-day festival, organizer Pepe Bezaury recalled an atypical moment. The Rapture’s Luke Jenner, LCD Soundsystem’s Pat Mahoney and Hot Chip’s Alexis Taylor, among others, took to the stage before going silent.

For its 2016 edition, Bestival has finally announced its theme: The Future. While their announcement video takes cues from the gritty synths of the 80’s, we’re certainly going to get caught inside the bass monsoons of modern production. Playing effortlessly into the year’s theme, Major Lazer, Hot Chip, and The Cure have been announced as headliners for the first wave lineup. However, no future themed event would be complete without the avant garde reaches of Animal Collective, and the accompanying house of Eats Everything, Danny Byrd, Richie Hawtin, TS5, and Skream.
Bestival Curator Rob de Bank says, “Prepare yourselves for a Bestival unlike any other with futuristic new stages, and as ever it’s a broad church of music from every decade and every genre.” Bestival will take place from September 8th to the 11th, and you can find more information on their website. You’re not going to want to miss this one.

We're probably not getting an LCD Soundsystem reunion, so this might be the next best thing: Hot Chip covering the band's masterpiece "All My Friends" inside their cover of Bruce Springsteen's "Dancing in the Dark." Hot Chip has been known to cover both songs live, but there is something truly special about the combination. Though the songs are about different things, they have a similar mixture of melancholy and hope. Expect to press repeat when the video ends.

Governors Ball happened last weekend, and judging by the recap video, it proved to be one of the best festivals of the year. For its 2015 outing, the event boasted a heavy electronic lineup compared to previous iterations, sporting the likes of Getter, Hot Chip, Sbtrkt and plenty more. Despite technical difficulties with Deadmau5′ new stage, the 5th edition of the NYC music festival was a massive success.
The official aftermovie wonderfully captures the East coast vibe, and showcases the rising popularity of Governors Ball. Tuned to Flume’s “Insane,” there’s no shortage of water spewing, dust clouds, or sequin slaps in this stylish slow-motion feast. Overall, I’m pretty hurt over not attending and I definitely don’t plan on missing next year.

Most music that comes from the fingertips of someone who is British is almost always a masterpiece, and Hot Chip is definitely not an exception to that. They have come a long way and have made some great adjustments and progression to their sound. They have taken a much more minimal approach, and are seducing the ears of millions of eager dance obsessed youth. The members of Hot Chip are trying to decipher in […]...

Welcome to a new week of Skip Or Repeat, capsule reviews of the week's newest albums. New albums out this week, on May 19: '80s love from Killers frontman Brandon Flowers, fresh noise from Paul Weller, a mess from Jamie Foxx, Faith No More's return after a 17-year absence and a pop-club mix from Zedd. Additional recommendations from my end include Holly Herndon with crazed beats, Holly Miranda with some true rockers, Hot Chip's chirpy electronica, and Shamir's outstanding brew of funk, soul, R&B and dance. What new music is on your radar this week? What have you been listening to?...

In a press release issued today about Universal's slate of upcoming animated movies produced by Illumination Entertainment, we got word on when the already announced "Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas" and the properly assumed "Despicable Me 3" would hit theaters nationwide. But they also announced an untitled project for 2016, one that is infinitely more interesting than either of these projects—an animated feature written and directed by Garth Jennings, who was responsible (alongside frequent creative partner Nick Goldsmith) for some of the more unforgettable videos in recent memory—bands such as Radiohead, Blur, Pulp, Badly Drawn Boy, Beck, Hot Chip, Supergrass, R.E.M.—as well as big-screen vehicles "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" and "Son of Rambow." Color us intrigued. Not much is known about the project (you can read the annoyingly cryptic synopsis below), although it should be known that this is the first big-screen project...

I don't know what the hell happened...I've been moaning about quality albums, you know, with great songs top to bottom, and then bam! I get 28-year old singer/songwriter Willy Mason's excellent new release Carry On, Bob Dylan's Another Self Portrait - The Bootleg Series Vol. 10, and newcomer pop-rock crooner Jay Stolar's More Than We Think (image above). Maybe it's my state of mind, maybe it's the state of the world, maybe it's the state of universe. Regardless, this simple, evocative music cuts through all the bullshit that seems destined to drag us down into the abyss of life's giant cesspool.

The members of Franz Ferdinand are in a good mood. In fact, they usually are. It's something I ask lead singer Alex Kapranos about when I speak to him via phone call from London. Unlike some indie-rock outfits, Franz Ferdinand's lyrics tend to be sanguine -- less melancholic. Kapranos recognizes this quality about his band, even if he chuckles at the question like the observation is foreign to him.
It may help that Franz Ferdinand has maintained a pretty even level of fame for quite some time. After hitting mainstream success with 2004's "Take Me Out," the quartet from Glasgow was everywhere, at least as far as indie crossovers go. The group hasn't seen a single as monstrous as that breakout, but the band remains a staple among fans. They recently performed on "The Late Show with David Letterman" and "Conan," ushering in the release of their fourth album, "Right Thoughts,...

Lollapalooza 2013 kicked off Friday afternoon in Chicago with only brief rain, hordes of bare bodies and music that ranged from tremendous to truly awful -- in other words, it was a pretty typical Day 1.
Story continues below
The (presumably ticketed) fest-goers who arrived early when gates opened at 11 a.m. were among the first Lolla fans to check out the damn-near impenetrable 8-foot steel fence erected to keep jumpers out of the 2013 fanfare.
Early morning rains had made a mess of the field, so officials were spreading mulch around the soggiest parts of the park and taping off others to avoid and all-out mud mess.
Things proceeded on with relative order until a brief rain shower soaked Grant Park a little after 2 p.m. Despite the downpour, the fields didn't quite devolve into the all-out mudslide like they had in years past. After the 2012 storm evacuation mess, this year Lolla...

Damn, playing a Gibson Sg never looked or sounded so sexy! Before the press folks dropped her new album on me, I didn't know of this compelling singer-songwriter formerly with the North Carolina outfit The Biscuit Burners. This is my pick hit from her new effort. Collaborating with bassist Bill Reynolds of Band of Horses has given her a chiming folk-rock vibe on her third solo effort. And tours with the Tedeschi Trucks Band and Chris Isaak certainly helped inform her "new" sound.

"Talk Me Down" - Willy Mason: Carry On (Communion)
Us singer-songwriter Willy adds some Tom Waits boho clanking -- courtesy of Hot Chip producer Dan Carey no doubt -- to this simple, evocative tune and it keeps things percolating along quite nicely. Sharing a label and sometimes touring stage with fellow new folk artists Mumford & Sons seems like a logical bookend. Good thing, too, as we need more music like this, all the time. Three albums in and it's safe to say that this young man is a musical marvel.

Here's a nice early week boost: Hot Chip's "Dark & Stormy" debuted on BBC's Radio One on Monday night, a charming one-off single that picks up amiably where the band's last full-length left off.
Recorded in London at the Club Ralph studio (like "In Our Heads," their last album), the track will be available on vinyl and digital download on July 22. NME reports that the song's b-side will be a rejiggered version of the band's popular single "Look at Where We Are," featuring Tori and Reiko Kudo singing in Japanese.

The xx broke into the indie music scene in 2009 with their mesmerizing, whispery self-titled album -- and every hipster from Brentwood to Brooklyn embraced their emotional lyrics and addictive sound.
Bandmates Romy Madley Croft and Oliver Sim started making music together at age 15, but they've known each other since they were 3 years old. Hailing from south London, Croft and Sim studied at the Elliott School, the same institution that claims Hot Chip, Burial and Four Tet among its alumni talent.
But the xx's path wasn't fated: Croft admitted in an interview with The Huffington Post that she never had the intention of becoming a musician. She took up the drums to get out of class, she picked up a guitar after not being too great at the drums, and she started singing just so she could learn the guitar a little better. Bandmate Jamie Smith joined the group later, rounding out the trio.

Hot Chip is returning to the United States for a string of dates in support of "In Our Heads," the well-received album the band released in June of last year.
The English indie-electro quintet will start their American journey at the Ultra Music Festival, the Coachella of dance music (later, in April, they'll also perform at Coachella itself). But though they're seeing quite a few bookings at dance festivals, Hot Chip's Alexis Taylor tells The Huffington Post the band isn't too concerned about the fist-pumping audience.
"I think people know what to expect when they come to see Hot Chip," he said in a phone interview from the band's rehearsal space in London. "So we still get booked, but we may seem a bit more like a live band by comparison, whereas a few years back we were just doing our own thing and some other bands were doing something similar.

With a new expanded two-weekend format, a massive new main stage structure, and a big 15th anniversary to celebrate, it was obvious Ultra Music Festival would be going big for 2013.
Instead, it went massive. The just-released Phase 2 lineup reveals Ultra will host its most diverse and thorough lineup yet this March in Miami's Bayfront Park: crowd faves like Laidback Luke, Afrojack, Calvin Harris, and Dirty South are back, but the lineup also includes a slew of live acts including Snoop Dogg and Sleigh Bells.
"What we've achieved with this edition's ocean of talent and stage production is we feel unprecedented," said Ultra founder, CEO and president Russell Faibisch. "As the industry we work in continues to explode, with so much talent emerging and the taste of our consumer changing in the process, diversity was key."

This Ides of March, the only thing getting assassinated is millions of festivalgoers' eardrums at the now extended Ultra Music Festival in Miami's Bayfront Park.
Organizers are doubling down on the pleasure and fun, hosting not one but two weekends of Edm. But can the music fest possibly top last year's Skrillex set, Madonna's "Molly" debacle, and throwback performances by Kraftwork and New Order?
Time to break out the glow necklaces and shutter shades, and find out. Ultra's phase one lineup has been released for 2013, announcing 13 DJs and 13 live acts in addition to the previously announced DeadMaud5 and Swedish House Mafia, who will play both weekends as part of their farewell performance.
Watch the video tease above.
There's already plenty of untz-untz buzz that acts like Major Lazer, Crystal Castles, and Hot Chip are saddling up besides the standard set of mainstay performers that includes Tiesto and David Guetta.

When we spoke to Peter Serafinowicz last year, he mentioned in passing that he was working on a joke book tentatively titled The Funniest Book in the World: Volume One. After a small tweak and plenty of gagsmithery, this month sees the release of the wonderful A Billion Jokes! (Volume One), mixing up the comic's best Twitter one-liners and hilarious illustrations. To mark its release, Digital Spy got on the phone with Peter and asked him all about jokes, stand-up, working with Hot Chip, heckler murder and why he both loves and hates Stewart Lee. Why a joke book and not a teary memoir - which seems to be the usual way into books for comedians?

On 2nd April 2011, LCD Soundsystem played its final show at Madison Square Garden. LCD frontman James Murphy (see our interview with the man himself here) made the conscious decision to disband one of the most celebrated and influential bands of its generation at the peak of its popularity, ensuring that the band would go out on top with the biggest and most ambitious concert of its career. The instantly sold out, near four-hour extravaganza did just that, moving the thousands in attendance to tears of joy and grief, with New York magazine calling the event “a marvel of pure craft” and Time magazine lamenting “we may never dance again.” The gig saw LCD supported by post-punk group Liquid Liquid as well as a handful of special guests including The Juan MacLean and members of Arcade Fire and Hot Chip.

The prolific cellist, composer, singer, and musician Arthur Russell defied musical classification, and two decades after his death his music still resonates with listeners across the musical spectrum. "Freak folk" singer Devendra Banhart is a fan, as is contemporary classical composer Nico Muhly, who referred to Russell as “the first modern musician.” Russell, who made his home in the East Village of New York in the 1970s until his death from AIDS in 1992, touched the lives of some of our most beloved artists, including Allen Ginsberg, Philip Glass, and David Byrne.
