Eleven years ago, Gabby Giffords was a popular U.S. Congressman visiting constituents in Arizona when she was shot in the head. Six people died and 19 were injured at the hands of a mentally ill gunman in a parking lot outside Safeway, while Giffords sustained severe brain injuries that left her with aphasia, a condition that makes it difficult for her to put the thoughts in her head into words.
That harrowing backstory strikes a jarring contrast to the chipper woman who arrived for a Zoom interview last week to discuss “Gabby Giffords Won’t Back Down,” the new documentary that tells the story of how she and her husband, astronaut-turned-senator Mark Kelly, rebuilt their lives.
Asked how she spends her time these days, Giffords grinned.
“I’m sobusy,” she said, speaking in the short burst of word clusters that define her speech today. “Lotta Zoom calls. Work, work, work.

Kevin Macdonald’s Whitney is having its world premiere tonight out of competition at the Cannes Film Festival, and Miramax and Roadside Attractions are priming the pump by unveiling the official trailer for the documentary that digs deep into the life of Whitney Houston. The movie hits U.S. theaters on July 6.
Houston broke more music biz records than any other female in history, selling more than 200 million albums globally and becoming the first to chart seven consecutive No. 1 U.S. No. 1 singles. But there was a darker side to the success, as her career gave way to erratic behavior, scandals and eventually her death in 2012 at age 48.
As the trailer hints, the docu is unflinching and uses previously unseen archival footage, demo recordings, rare performances, audio archives and interviews with friends and family who were there for Houston’s ups and downs.
Simon Chinn, Jonathan Chinn and Lisa Erspamer are producers.

The 47-year-old television host penned a humorous letter to the Fashion Police star before her death – Joan Rivers died in September at 81. Melissa's letter details the delights and downsides of cohabitating with her mom and her son Cooper, 14, in their Los Angeles home.
The letter was recently published in A Letter to My Mom, a book created by Lisa Erspamer that features letters from celebrities and non-celebrities alike who wrote notes of gratitude to the women who raised them.

Los Angeles -- Oprah Winfrey is used to running the show, whether it was her hit daytime TV program or the fledgling cable channel named for her and which she rules as chairman and chief executive.
But this week's Oprah Winfrey Network shakeup, which included a 20 percent staff layoff, thrusts her into a new dynamic: power-sharing with a top executive from the company that's bankrolled Own with $300 million-plus.
It's a crucial moment for the media queen, who made Own her next big move after "The Oprah Winfrey Show," and for Own itself: Can Winfrey work as an effective corporate teammate with partner Discovery Communications to turn the struggling channel around?
There's another bedrock question: Does a big enough audience exist for the earnest, uplifting fare on Winfrey's Own, so antithetical to the blowsy charms of "Jersey Shore," "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" and much else that's popular on cable TV?...

Exclusive: The revolving door at Own: The Oprah Winfrey Network continues. The latest high-level executive to depart the struggling cable network is Svp Business and Legal Affairs Alan Saxe, a well-respected executive who ran Own’s business affairs department. In light of his departure (he reportedly left to pursue other opportunities), Tina Perry, VP Business and Legal Affairs, will lead the department as interim head. Saxe is the latest in a slew of executive departures at Own, most recently Evp Production and Development Lisa Erspamer. Meanwhile, Own has been in cost-cutting mode after an yearlong struggle to break out in the ratings despite a marquee brand name and massive cash infusion from co-parent Discovery Communications. I hear the network’s executives have been told that the business in its current form is unsustainable and cuts have to be made, especially in the main Los Angeles office. Leading the charge in...

Another day, another shakeup for Oprah Winfrey's struggling network Own. Lisa Erspamer, the network's executive vice president of production and development, left on Wednesday. An Own spokesperson told TheWrap in a statement that Erspamer is leaving "by mutual agreement to pursue other opportunities." Erspamer was no casual employee of Winfrey's. She came aboard the network in January 2010 as a 15-year veteran of Winfrey's Harpo Productions, Inc., and had been the co-executive producer of "The Oprah Winfrey Show" since 2006. During her tenure at "The Oprah Winfrey Show," Erspamer oversaw key events...

Exclusive: The revolving door at the struggling Own: The Oprah Winfrey Network continues without slowing, and even without warning or public announcement. This time it has claimed one of Winfrey’s closest and most trusted executives, Lisa Erspamer. We’ve learned that Erspamer, Evp of production and development for the underperforming cable network, was let go yesterday after an 18-year tenure with Winfrey. We hear that the news was delivered to Erspamer while Winfrey was out of the country. (Oprah has been in India to interview Deepak Chopra for her new show Oprah’s Next Chapter.) We hear Erspamer didn’t even receive the news from Oprah personally. No public statement was made. Instead an internal ”Assistant to the Office of the President” email was sent around only to staff: one of those impersonal “we wish her well” announcements. “Lisa was shocked,” a source tells us. “She’d been in Oprah’s inner circle.

Los Angeles, CA – Own: Oprah Winfrey Network is adding the documentary “Miss Representation” to the Own Documentary Film Club, it was announced today by Lisa Erspamer, chief creative officer, Own. Directed by Jennifer Siebel Newsom, the Sundance Film Festival favorite is the 11th documentary acquisition for Own. “Miss Representation” brings together some of America’s most influential women in politics, news and entertainment, including Condoleezza Rice, Nancy Pelosi, Katie Couric, Rachel Maddow, Margaret Cho, Rosario Dawson and Gloria Steinem to give audiences an inside look at the media’s message and depiction of women. The film explores women’s under-representation in positions of power by challenging their limited and often disparaging portrayals in the media. “Miss Representation” takes the stand that the media is portraying women’s primary values as their youth, beauty and sexuality – rather than their capacity as leaders. To further this important dialogue, ro*co films will...

Exclusive: Oprah Winfrey's upstart cable network Own continued its aggressive buying at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival by acquiring North American rights to Crime After Crime, the Yoav Potash-directed documentary. I'm told the deal was six figures, and that Own will afford the film a qualifying Oscar run before it airs on Oprah's new network. Own chief creative officer Lisa Erspamer made the deal with Submarine's Josh Braun and David Koh. The doc is about Deborah Peagler, an abused woman who struck back at the boyfriend who beat her. She was sentenced to 25 years to life for his murder. Some 20 years into her sentence, California passed a law permitting domestic violence survivors to have their case reopened. A pair of real estate lawyers took on Peagler's case, and what seemed an easy effort turned into a politically-driven nightmare to free her. The film debuted January 23 at the Temple Theatre,...

Meanwhile, Tracy Underwood has joined ABC Studios as VP drama development. Hunter will report to ABC Svp comedy Samie Kim Falvey; Underwood to ABC Studios Svp drama Patrick Moran. ABC's VP comedy Lynn Barrie was tapped to lead the network's current department, and ABC Studios' VP drama Stephanie Leifer took over current at the studio, creating vacancies in the 2 development departments.
