Projects centered around the left-wing revolutionary group, the Black Panther Party, continue to fascinate popular culture. In 2022, Daniel Kaluuya won an Oscar for portraying the betrayed deputy chairman, Fred Hampton, in the bio-crime drama, “Judas and the Black Messiah.” Now, a new limited series, “The Big Cigar,” based on a Playboy Article by Joshuah Bearman (known for the Wired Article that inspired “Argo”), tells the too-good-to-be-true story of Black Panther co-founder Huey Percy Newton’s escape to Cuba with the assistance of a famous film producer.

James Graham’s double-OIivier Award winning play Dear England is hitting TV screens and the prolific creator is thinking about whether any former soccer players could make the cut.
Speaking to Deadline outside last night’s prestigious London theater awards, Graham floated the likes of Match of the Day host Gary Lineker and former England goalkeeper David Seaman as potentials, although no approaches have been made. Watch the full clip below.
“It’s a drama first and foremost so of course we need good actors but [the question of having real soccer players in it is] a good question,” said Graham. “Do we get the real Gary Lineker? Do we get the real David Seaman? It’s a good question as [the show] should have that sense of fun and playfulness as well.”
Earlier this year, Match of the Day pundit Ian Wright featured in Daniel Kaluuya’s Netflix directorial debut The Kitchen, while footballers such as Vinnie Jones and Eric Cantona...

You may recall that this January, Sir Elton John became the 19th person ever to win the coveted Egot by claiming his first Emmy. But what you may be less familiar with is the fact that Emma Stone can become just the 20th actress (and the 25th entertainer overall) to claim an Eggocc if she triumphs in the race for the Best Drama Actress prize at this year’s Emmy Awards for her performance in the Paramount+/Showtime series “The Curse.” Too, Robert Downey Jr. is poised to be only the sixth actor to claim an Eggocc should he take home the Emmy prize in September for Best Movie/Limited Series Supporting Actor for his work in the HBO limited series “The Sympathizer.”
What is an Eggocc, you ask? Why, it’s Emmy, Golden Globe, Oscar and Critics Choice statuettes, of course. And as just alluded to, winning all four...

Dev Patel’s feature directorial debut Monkey Man leads the new films at this weekend’s UK-Ireland box office, starting in 592 cinemas through Universal.
Directed, produced, from a story by and starring Patel, Monkey Man follows an anonymous young man who unleashes a campaign of violence against the corrupt leaders who murdered his mother, and continue to systematically victimise the poor and powerless.
Filmed in early 2021, Netflix originally bought worldwide rights to Monkey Man. After Jordan Peele boarded the title as producer through his Monkeypaw Productions, Universal acquired it from Netflix earlier this year. It debuted at SXSW last month.

British actor Sheyi Cole has a prominent role in Thea Sharrock’s Netflix original film “The Beautiful Game.”
The film revolves around the Homeless World Cup, an annual soccer tournament bringing together displaced or dispossessed players from nearly 50 countries, playing not merely for a trophy but for a second shot at life. Cole plays Jason, a would-be ladies’ man given a sharp #MeToo education when he inappropriately comes onto sparky Mexican-American player Rosita (Cristina Rodio).
“One thing that was great about Thea is that she was so hands on – any concerns that we had, she was willing to have conversations and was able to alleviate any concerns that we essentially had, surrounding that conversation with Jason,” Cole told Variety. “I think what she really wanted to highlight was Jason’s naivety and innocence. And the lack of role models that he had in his life. So although Jason does make grave mistakes,...

This year’s races for Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress were over before they started. Robert Downey Jr. in “Oppenheimer” and Da’Vine Joy Randolph in “The Holdovers” took leads in the Gold Derby odds in their respective categories early in the season. They both went on to pick up Golden Globe, Critics Choice, BAFTA and SAG Awards. By the time the Oscars rolled around, there was a “near zero” chance of either of them losing.
In contrast, the lead acting contests provided considerably more suspense. Bradley Cooper in “Maestro,” Paul Giamatti in “The Holdovers” and Cillian Murphy in “Oppenheimer” were all looking strong at different point in the derby, before Murphy really exploded and ultimately won the Best Actor Oscar. And Lily Gladstone in “Killers of the Flower Moon” and Emma Stone in “Poor Things” kept trading the top spot in the Best Actress odds. Gladstone finally reclaimed...

Those teen drama TV series are not to be taken lightly. Because they could produce the most promising Oscar-nominated or winning actors. For example, consider Skins, created by Jamie Brittain and Bryan Elsley.
Every episode usually centers on a specific character or group of characters and the challenges they encounter in their daily lives. Themes of mental illness, dysfunctional families, bullying, and s*icide were also covered in greater detail. Not only did Skins receive positive reviews and good box office results, but it also gained a cult following. Of course, this is due to the stellar cast.
Dev Patel in Skins
Jordan Peele also agreed on this. Unbelievably, he has not watched Skins but he still gives the popular TV series credit for “producing” two of the best actors in contemporary film history—Dev Patel and Daniel Kaluuya.

Since the inception of the Academy Awards, the U.S.-based organization behind them has always strived to honor worldwide film achievements. Their extensive roster of competitive acting winners alone consists of artists from 30 unique countries, three of which first gained representation during the 2020s. The last full decade’s worth of triumphant performers hail from eight countries, while 42.1% of the individual actors nominated during that time originate from outside of America.
The academy’s history of recognizing acting talent on a global scale dates all the way back to the inaugural Oscars ceremony in 1929, when Swiss-born Emil Jannings (who was of German and American parentage) won Best Actor for his work in both “The Last Command” and “The Way of All Flesh.” Over the next three years, the Best Actress prize was exclusively awarded to Canadians: Mary Pickford (“Coquette”), Norma Shearer (“The Divorcee”), and Marie Dressler (“Min and Bill...

By taking home the 2024 Best Actor Oscar for “Oppenheimer,” Cillian Murphy blazed a trail as the first Irish-born lead performer ever honored by the film academy. Prior to his victory, there had not been a native Irish acting winner in over 30 years nor any from his city of Cork, as the only earlier examples had involved supporting winners and fellow Dubliners Barry Fitzgerald and Brenda Fricker. His historic achievement brings the total number of different countries that have produced acting champs during the last decade to eight.
As has been the case throughout practically all of Oscars history, the United States is by far the dominant birthplace among the 2015-2024 acting winners. Since the Academy Awards were first handed out in 1929, only 23 Oscars have been awarded to performances given by Black actresses and actors. Hattie McDaniel made history for Black performers by winning for “Gone With the Wind” (supporting in 1939), while Sidney Poitier was the first male actor to prevail for “Lilies of the Field” (lead in 1963). Denzel Washington became the first two-time Black acting champion when he claimed victory for “Glory” (supporting in 1989) and “Training Day” (lead in 2001), with Mahershala Ali joining him years later for “Moonlight” (supporting in 2016) and “Green Book” (supporting in 2018). Halle Berry was the first, and so far only, Black Best Actress thanks to “Monster’s Ball” (2001). The acting category with the most Black winners is Best Supporting Actress, with 10 including recent champ Da’Vine Joy Randolph for “The Holdovers” (2023). Just as Gold Derby predicted, Robert Downey Jr. (“Oppenheimer”) has prevailed at the 2024 Oscars in the category of Best Supporting Actor. Earlier this awards season, the 58-year-old performer, who is perhaps best known for playing Marvel’s “Iron Man,” claimed victory at the Golden Globes, Critics Choice, BAFTA and SAG Awards for his role as Rear Admiral Lewis Strauss in Christopher Nolan‘s biopic about the life of theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer. This marks Downey’s first career Oscars win; he was previously nominated for “Chaplin” and “Tropic Thunder”.

The 2024 Oscar nominees for Best Actor are Bradley Cooper (“Maestro”), Colman Domingo (“Rustin”), Paul Giamatti (“The Holdovers”), Cillian Murphy (“Oppenheimer”), and Jeffrey Wright (“American Fiction”). Murphy (16/5) is favored to win by our odds, followed in order by Giamatti (18/5), Cooper (9/2), Wright (9/2), and Domingo (9/2).
Whereas last year’s lead male lineup was the first in almost nine decades to consist entirely of Oscars newcomers, this one includes three rookies and two general veterans. Standing alone in having already competed for this specific award is Cooper, who was previously recognized for “Silver Linings Playbook” (2013), “American Sniper” (2015), and “A Star Is Born” (2019). Since he personally helmed both “A Star Is Born” and “Maestro,” he is now the fourth person to direct himself to multiple acting nominations, following Laurence Olivier, Warren Beatty, and Clint Eastwood.

The 2024 Oscar nominees for Best Supporting Actor are Sterling K. Brown (“American Fiction”), Robert De Niro (“Killers of the Flower Moon”), Robert Downey Jr. (“Oppenheimer”), Ryan Gosling (“Barbie”), and Mark Ruffalo (“Poor Things”). Our odds currently show Downey (3/1) triumphing, followed in order of likelihood by Gosling (39/10), Ruffalo (9/2), De Niro (9/2), and Brown (9/2).
At 80, De Niro ranks as the ninth oldest nominee in the history of this category, which was established just six years before he was born. Less than eight years separate him from record holder Christopher Plummer, whose victory at 82 for “Beginners” (2012) would put him solely ahead of De Niro on the winners list. As it happens, De Niro already sits in sixth place among the youngest supporting male champs, having triumphed at 31 on his very first bid for “The Godfather Part II” (1975).

The American Psycho reboot is reportedly in development at Lionsgate Films, with the studio looking for writers for the project. The Christian Bale starring 2000 film discussed consumerism in a satirical thriller context and earned a cult classic status. The new project should offer something unique to capture the attention of the audience. One theory for the reboot may have the potential to surpass the original classic.

According to this theory, the American Psycho reboot project could be a series instead of a film. Each season or episode will be dedicated to a new psychopath, played by multiple talented artists, and they take the audience through different problems persisting in society.

According to reports, Lionsgate Films wants to reboot one of their cult classic IPs, American Psycho. Fans have been both skeptical and excited ever since this rumor dropped on the internet. Christian Bale’s film set in the ’80s had the perfect central character in Patrick Bateman. Bateman’s newfound fame in the present meme culture may have put the idea in the studio execs’ heads. However, the reboot movie will work only if two arcs are changed in Bret Eaton Ellis’ story.
Mary Harron and Christian Bale on the set of American Psycho
When Mary Harron took up the challenging task of adapting Ellis’ novel into a movie, the odds were stacked against her, unlike today. Both Harron and Bale were turned away from the film at one point before the studio realized their vision for the film.

Emmy and BAFTA nominee Dominique Fishback is set to receive the Culture Certified award at The Creative Collective’s inaugural Creative Class celebration.
The Culture Certified award will honor both established and emerging Black talent and seeks to recognize individuals whose contributions “significantly impact, influence, and shape cultural landscapes at large.” The special award is presented by the Create Collective (Ccnyc) in partnership with Prime Video’s Culture Rated initiative, which champions Black creatives, perspectives, and community across social media, on Prime Video and with in-person events, like CultureCon.
The prize marks the latest accolade for Fishback, who experienced a breakout year in 2023. She earned her first Emmy nomination for her buzzworthy performance as Dre in the Prime Video series “Swarm.” Fishback also earned nods from the Indie Spirit Awards, Gotham Awards, the NAACP Image Awards and more for her transformative work in the psychological comic thriller from co-creators Janine Nabers and Donald Glover.

Odds are that three of the four individual film winners at the SAG Awards on February 24 will be collecting Oscars two weeks later. Over the past 29 years, 87 of the 116 Academy Awards winners in the four acting races had first collected SAG Awards. That success rate of 75% makes this precursor prize a key bellwether to follow when making your 2024 Oscar predictions.
In each of the last two years, all four SAG champs repeated at the Oscars. In 2023, leads Michelle Yeoh (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”) and Brendan Fraser (“The Whale”) plus “Everything” featured performers Jamie Lee Curtis and Ke Huy Quan all had a chance to practice their Oscar acceptance speeches at these guild kudos. Likewise in 2022 for leads Will Smith (“King Richard”) and Jessica Chastain (“The Eyes of Tammy Faye”) plus supporting players Troy Kotsur (“Coda”) and Ariana DeBose (“West Side Story”).
But be warned: a perfect record of 4 for 4 has occurred just 10 times.

As of this writing the combined predictions of Gold Derby users lean towards Cillian Murphy (“Oppenheimer”) with 17/5 odds in this year’s Oscar race for Best Actor. Meanwhile, Paul Giamatti (“The Holdovers”) is close behind in second place with 69/20 odds. However, the former may have more going for him. Here are five reasons why I think Murphy is the favorite.
SEEOscars: Will ‘Oppenheimer’ or ‘Poor Things’ win all three design awards?
1. He’s starring in the Best Picture frontrunner
“Oppenheimer” is expected to be quite a juggernaut on Oscar night. It’s currently predicted to take home eight accolades: Best Picture, Best Director (Christopher Nolan), Best Supporting Actor (Robert Downey Jr.), Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Film Editing, Best Score and Best Sound. With that in mind, it’s possible that Murphy could be carried along in the sweep. He’s the face of the whole thing and carries the film on his shoulders.

“Barbie” is a cultural phenomenon, grossing nearly $1.5 billion and racking up eight Oscar nominations, all while launching scores of catchphrases and memes.
So it’s understandable that Mattel, the company behind the iconic doll, is looking to capitalize on its cinematic success by developing dozens of movies based on its games and toys. Moviegoers can look forward to Barney, Bob the Builder and He-Man hitting the big screen in the not-so-distant future.
But as Hollywood raids toy store shelves to feed its insatiable hunger for IP, it’s worth noting that when it comes to this type of film, for every “Barbie”-sized smash there’s a “Battleship”-like bomb. With that in mind, here are some of the movies that Mattel has in the works.

The 96th annual Oscar nominees luncheon gathered a vibrant crowd of celebrities, filmmakers and cinephiles at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills.
DeVon Franklin, a Board of Governors member, kicked off the event by announcing the roll call of attendees, starting with composer Laura Karpman of “American Fiction” and concluding with Robert Downey Jr., nominated for his supporting role in “Oppenheimer.”
Here are some of the key takeaways from the event.
Emma Stone and Bradley Cooper at the 2024 Oscars Nominees Luncheon.
The dog from “Anatomy of a Fall” stole the show.
The breakout star of the day was the lovable pooch from “Anatomy of a Fall.” Messi, the canine actor portraying Snoop in Justine Triet’s film, stole the hearts of nearly every nominee present. From Ryan Gosling and America Ferrera of “Barbie” fame to the musical sensation Billie Eilish, everyone seemed to be enchanted by the furry star.

After the Barbie Oscar snubs for Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig, Mattel has been getting negative reviews from activist investor Barington Capital.
Barbie may have earned a $1.4 billion dollars at the worldwide box office. But Barington in a recent letter to Mattel advised the toy maker to fix or sell off its American Girl and Fisher-Price brands as part of possible strategic alternatives to raise its share price.
“Mattel’s Fisher-Price and American Girl segments have witnessed dramatic and consistent revenue declines over a multi-year period,” the activist investor wrote to the toy maker. After unveiling his company’s fourth quarter results, Mattel CEO Ynon Kreiz told media analysts the Fischer-Price and American Girl properties remained valuable toy brands that the company would continue to invest in.

Leave the World Behind has officially become one of Netflix’s most popular films of all time.
Sam Esmail’s thriller has been steadily moving toward the English Films list for several weeks and finally crossed the threshold during the week of January 22 to 30, debuting at No. 8 with 136.3M views in its first 52 days. Since Netflix now uses a 91-day premiere window to measure the success of its titles, the film still has plenty of time to cement itself higher on the list.
In fact, it’s likely that Leave the World Behind will jump quickly past The Mother, which is currently at No. 7 with just 136.4M views in its premiere window.
Also headed to the most popular list is Berlin, which has tallied 50.1M views in its first 31 days on Netflix — enough to get it to No. 10 on the Non-English language list. The Money Heist franchise now holds four...

London, 20 years in the future: The gap between the rich and the poor has never been greater. Those who can’t afford to live in the city proper are forced to the outskirts of town with few resources — they barely have running water, steal food deliveries to survive, and can’t afford to bury their loved ones. This dystopian backdrop sets the stage for The Kitchen, a sci-fi social drama that follows a boy and his reluctant father figure as they try to navigate a system that’s stacked against them.
Oscar-, BAFTA-, and Golden Globe–winning actor Daniel Kaluuya (Get Out) co-directed the film along with Kibwe Tavares (Jonah). Kaluuya starred in Tavares’ short films Jonah and Robot & Scarecrow. The Kitchen — which also stars actor-rapper Kano, newcomer Jedaiah Bannerman, and Hope Ikpoku Jr. — is Kaluuya and Tavares’ feature directorial debut.

Netflix's science-fiction epic, The Kitchen, is making waves thanks (in part) to its shocking ending.
The dystopian blockbuster marks Black Panther actor Daniel Kaluuya's directorial debut, telling the story of a far-future London and the residents of the city's last social housing projects fighting against authority to survive.
The film follows Izi (Kane Robinson) and Benji (Jedaiah Bannerman) navigating the tight-knit but crime-riddled community known as the Kitchen and their conflict with law enforcement and the upper class.

The Oscar winner – and now director – and the rapper and Top Boy star Kane Robinson are longtime friends. Their new movie, the dystopian thriller The Kitchen, draws on their city childhoods
Daniel Kaluuya, Kane “Kano” Robinson and I are in a frou-frou hotel in London, all flowery cushions and curly mirrors, discussing differences. Differences between what home means when you’re young and when you’re older, differences between being good at something and being passionate about it, and the difference between a movie and a film. A movie, according to them, is big: ambitious, widescreen, built for success. A film is smaller: personal, niche, hopeful of attention.
The Kitchen is a new Netflix drama that Kaluuya wrote, produced and co-directed with Kibwe Tavares, and in which Robinson (Kano for his music) stars. The Kitchen is definitely, they say, a movie.

Who’s that knocking at the door?
That’s the question left with viewers when credits roll on the Netflix movie The Kitchen, directed by Kibwe Tavares and actor Daniel Kaluuya. Working with his co-writers Rob Hayes and Joe Murtagh, Kaluuya creates a bleak future for England in which rampant inequality and increased privatization of property has left many homeless. Despite its sci-fi setting, The Kitchen doesn’t concern itself with the usual tropes of the genre, focusing instead on the dramatic tension between loner Izi (Kane Robinson) and an orphan boy called Benji (Jedaiah Bannerman).
At least until the end, that is. The film builds to a thrilling climax, one that might leave some viewers wondering what happened and how it relates to the themes of The Kitchen.

Daniel Kaluuya and Kibwe Tavares have tried to make something very special by directing the movie titled The Kitchen. A somber tale of the bond between a boy and a man in a dystopian world adds so many colors to the palette that wouldn’t have been possible in a simpler story. The Kitchen rests on the performances and the mood created by cinematographer Wyatt Garfield. There is a melancholy of the new world that is so palpable that it doesn’t let the story take any ‘thrilling’ turns, and we are made to stew in the emotions that the lead characters are wrestling with. Kane Robinson brings a measured restraint to his performances that creates the required illusion of the weight on his shoulder of dystopian reality, while Jedaiah Bannerman is brilliant at testing his restraint.

For more than a few years now, Daniel Kaluuya has been at the forefront of great and allegorical science fiction: Get Out, Nope, even Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. His collaborations with talents like Jordan Peele and Ryan Coogler have burrowed into the minds of audiences with all the clarity of a spoon smacking a teacup. However, in his own mind, there turns out to be an even more oppressive sci-fi vision. And it’s one with brutal timeliness, and no cathartic Tsa in sight.
The Kitchen, which marks the directorial feature debut of both Kaluuya and Kibwe Tavares, is a project the two of have been dreaming about since a fortuitous barbershop discussion; they took the concept to Sundance in 2016 when, well before Get Out’s release, The Kitchen was selected for the Sundance Institute’s Screenwriting and Directing Lab; and now the idea has become hard and easily accessible...

Oscar-winning actor-turned-filmmaker Daniel Kaluuya’s directorial debut, “The Kitchen,” is a slightly unusual, oddly shaped movie at times. And/or, another way to look at it is, depending on your point of view, Daniel Kaluuya’s filmmaking debut may defy your expectations, and it has much more on its mind than you might presume. While it looks (and is marketed as) a sci-fi dystopian thriller about a future that is dark and grim, where the gap between rich and poor has been stretched beyond its limits, and gangs try and subvert the oppressive, ever-watchful Orwellian eye of the authority, what eventually emerges is something more soulful about fathers and sons and the collective power of community in the face of great inequality.
