Plot: based on acclaimed author Rebecca Godfrey’s book about the 1997 true story of fourteen-year-old Reena Virk who went to join friends at a party and never returned home. Through the eyes of Godfrey and a local police officer, the series takes us into the hidden world of the young girls accused of the murder — revealing startling truths about the unlikely killer.
Review: While crime exists worldwide, North America’s glut of true crime stories is centered on the United States. We often take for granted that our neighbors in the Great White North are more than America’s nice neighbors or denizens of the Fifty-First State. Canada is a massive country with its own good and bad, with crimes just as heinous as anything we see in America. While the events depicted in Under The Bridge are not as scary as serial killer tales, the story it retells is every bit as disturbing.

Hulu optioned Rebecca Godfrey’s Under the Bridge: The True Story of the Murder of Reena Virk back in 2022, and the limited series based on the bestseller is finally set to stream this month. Emmy nominee Riley Keough (Daisy Jones & The Six) stars as the late author of the 2005 true crime novel, and Oscar nominee Lily Gladstone (Killers of the Flower Moon) stars as a small town police officer intimately involved in the investigation.
“Under the Bridge is based on acclaimed author Rebecca Godfrey’s book about the 1997 true story of fourteen-year-old Reena Virk (Gupta) who went to join friends at a party and never returned home,” reads Hulu’s synopsis. “Through the eyes of Godfrey (Keough) and a local police officer (Gladstone), the series takes us into the hidden world of the young girls accused of the murder — revealing startling truths about the unlikely killer.”

Summer of Soul is picking up steam as awards season accelerates.
The documentary directed by Amir “Questlove” Thompson, which showcases the long-forgotten music-powered Harlem Cultural Festival of 1969, earned a leading four nominations for the International Documentary Association Awards today, a day after winning the top prize at the Critics’ Choice Documentary Awards. The IDA recognition came for Best Documentary Feature, Best Director, Best Music Documentary and Best Editing.

The 2021 International Documentary Association (IDA) Awards has revealed the nominations for Best Feature and Best Short. In a year crowded with festival hits and critically hailed nonfiction (see the Critics Choice Documentary Award winners), with more debuts unspooling at Doc NYC, every reputable nonfiction awards group helps to curate the sprawling list of eventual Oscar contenders, and the IDA is no exception.
A number of films, including nominations leader “Summer of Soul” (four nominations), “Faya Dayi” and “Not Going Quietly” (three) and animated Danish Oscar submission “Flee” (two), keep turning up on early awards lists. But top dog NatGeo’s high-profile, well-reviewed titles “The Rescue,” “Becoming Cousteau,” and “Fauci” were left out in favor of an international selection of less-hyped titles. (“First Wave” scored the Pare Lorentz award plus a cinematography nomination.) PBS earned 14 nominations across its programming strands, followed by Netflix and Hulu each with seven nominations and HBO with six nominations.

The International Documentary Association came out with its shortlist of the year’s best documentaries today, a list as notable for what was left out as what made it in.
A total of 29 feature films earned a spot on the IDA shortlist, including some considered Oscar frontrunners: Summer of Soul, Ascension, and Flee—each of which earned nominations last week for both the Critics’ Choice Documentary Awards and the Gotham Awards. But several other films making a strong bid for Oscar attention were snubbed, among them The Rescue, Becoming Cousteau, Attica, Procession, and My Name Is Pauli Murray.
The IDA gave recognition to several documentaries with an international dimension, like Faya Dayi, from Mexican-Ethiopian director Jessica Bashir, Chinese-born filmmaker Nanfu Wang’s Covid-19-related doc In The Same Breath, and Miguel’s War, the story of a gay Lebanese man who exiles himself to Spain. Exclusive: Jacinta, a feature documentary about drug addiction, has had an impressive festival run at such events as Doc NYC, AFI Fest and IDFA. The film, directed by Jessica Earnshaw, is now heading to Hulu.
The streamer has picked up the feature doc, which comes from ABC News and Impact Partners, and will add it to its originals slate. Jacinta will premiere on October 8 alongside a select theatrical run.
The film follows a young woman who struggles to find stability amid years of addiction and reconnect with the daughter she left behind.
Director Earnshaw is a documentary photographer and filmmaker whose work focuses on criminal justice, familial relationships and women. She won Tribeca Film Festival’s Albert Maysles New Documentary Director Award. Jacinta is her first film.
Shot over three years, the film begins at the Maine Correctional Center where Jacinta, 26, and her mother Rosemary, 46, are incarcerated together, both recovering from drug addiction.

Tempest Storm, the often-flame-haired striptease artist, burlesque performer, star of early Russ Meyer films and later a rock generation icon, died Tuesday in her Las Vegas apartment. She was 93.
Her death was reported to the Las Vegas Review-Journal by Storm’s longtime friend and business partner Harvey Robbins. Storm had been suffering from dementia and recently underwent hip surgery.
Robbins was at Storm’s home when she died, as were a nurse and Las Vegas burlesque performers Kalani Kokonuts and Miss Redd.
According to the Burlesque Hall of Fame, Storm was born Annie Blanche Banks in Eastman, Ga, and at the age of 20, already twice-married, moved to Hollywood. At first working as a cocktail waitress, she soon found work as a striptease performer with the Follies Theater. She adopted the stage name Tempest Storm in 1950 and, shortly after her arrival in L.A. became friends with neighbor Marilyn Monroe.

“Where is the hope?”
That was the question was posed last week at one of the world’s most prominent launch pads for nonfiction films in development — Hot Docs Pitch Forum — and it reflected the general mood in the room.
As 20 filmmaking teams pitched their projects to dozens of top decision-makers, funders, and broadcasters sitting around the long wooden table in the Gothic-designed Hart House at the University of Toronto, there was a particular excitement for new documentaries that were “fresh,” “optimistic” and “fun”—to use some of the words spoken publically over the two-day pitch-a-thon.
See MoreHow Hot Docs, North America’s Smartest Festival, Could Anoint an Oscar Winner
On the opposite end of the spectrum, you could see those same powerbrokers struggling over what to do with still essential, but tough issue-driven films having to do with post-revolutionary countries in the Middle East or the global refugee crisis.

On the heels of Telefilm Canada’s pledge on November 11 that half of its projects will be directed or written by women in a move to close the industry gender gap by 2020, the Whistler Film Festival (Nov 30 — Dec 4) was proud to present an unprecedented number of female focused films, talent, events and awards throughout its 2016 programs.
The festival featured a record 31 (36%) films all directed by women (including 15 feature films out of 50 and 16 short films out of 36). Wff also has 38 (58%) female filmmakers out of the 66 Canadian artists confirmed to date participating in 11 talent programs — including 22 directors, 6 producers, 3 screenwriters, 2 actors, and 5 musicians/bands in the Music Showcase. Eva Markvoort, the subject of "65_RedRoses," passed away on March 27, 2010, killed by the cystic fibrosis she'd battled all her life. It's not a secret -- she chronicled her illness and her escalating health problems on her blog, right up to her death at age 25. "65_RedRoses," a Canadian documentary from director Philip Lyall and Nimisha Mukerji getting its broadcast premiere tonight at 9pm on Own, doesn't alert you to this fact at the start, but it's nice to know if only to brace yourself, as Eva's warm and brave and really wants to live. "65_RedRoses" is half personal doc, half chronicle of a disease. Eva's the heart of the film, and her online posts and videos take a central part in the story as time goes on, but Lyall and Mukerji also pay a visit to two of the friends she made in the online cystic fibrosis community in which she...

Take a deep breath. Unless you have cystic fibrosis, this is probably something you take for granted. About halfway through the documentary "65_Redroses," which documents the life of Cf sufferer Eva Markvoort, you might find yourself gasping for air, if only to relish in your ability to do so. "65_Redroses" refers to Eva's online handle with which she communicates with other Cf patients, and her connections with them are an integral part of her story. But the spine of the film belongs to Eva, as she is such a compelling and arresting persona from the outset that audiences can't help but be drawn in by her.
Filmmakers Nimisha Mukerji and Phillip Lyall began following 23-year-old Eva with a camera while she was in the hospital waiting for a lung transplant, and was told by doctors she had only two years to live. The young Vancouver woman is clearly so full of life on screen,...

The Vancouver International Film Festival closed out its run for 2009 on Friday, Oct. 16 with a gala screening of French director Caroline Bottaro's Queen to Play (Joueuse).
I was happy with the range of films I was able to screen and review (with the sole exception of the awful Forbidden Door).
There were a few that were on my list, though, that scheduling conflicts prevented my from seeing.
Chief among them the new film from Canadian director Atom Egoyan, Chloe. A good sign, though, that it was so popular that its two screenings sold out.
I had also hoped to catch the Wilco concert film, Ashes of American Flags. I'm a big fan of Jeff Tweedy and his band.
I'm also disappointed that I ended up missing Roceterrania, a documentary film about Renaldo Kuhler, an artist who has, over the years, created an entire imaginary world that exists along the...
