Peacock has taken in for development Fear, a series based on the 1996 thriller film, from The Path creator Jessica Goldberg, Imagine Television and Universal TV, Deadline has confirmed.
Written by Goldberg, inspired by Imagine Entertainment’s 1996 cult classic film Fear, the modern series reinvention finds two young lovers in a psychological game of cat and mouse—but who’s the cat, and who’s the mouse? When David and Nicole first meet in Seattle, it feels like an epic, once-in-a-lifetime romance – but soon it becomes clear that the seemingly perfect couple is anything but. Told from conflicting points of view, the series wrestles with personal demons, hidden agendas and reframes the “he said she said” convention into a twist-filled suspense story about toxic relationships.
Goldberg executive produces with Imagine Television’s Brian Grazer, Ron Howard, Lilly Burns and Kristen Zolner. Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group, is the studio.

The CW is building out its “Drew-niverse,” established by the network’s hit series Nancy Drew, putting in development a series based on the classic book series Tom Swift, with a twist. Following the continued success of its “Arrowverse,” the CW is looking to establish a new line of series: the “Drew-niverse.”
The network is developing a spinoff from its “Nancy Drew” mystery drama called “Tom Swift,” Variety has learned. Like “Nancy Drew,” the prospective show is inspired by the Stratemeyer Syndicate series of novels.
CW’s plan is for the Swift character to appear in an episode of the upcoming second season of “Nancy Drew,” with the potential for a back-door pilot off the back of that. A pilot script is already in the works, according to sources. “Nancy Drew” bosses Melinda Hsu Taylor and Noga Landau co-created this new series with Cameron Johnson of Fake Empire, which also produces the original show.

William “Bill” Bernstein, who spent six decades in the motion picture business, died today at age 87, according to his longtime friend, Jeff Frankel.
In 1978, Bernstein, along with four other executives from United Artists, including Arthur Krim, Eric Pleskow, Mike Medavoy and Robert Benjamin, departed United Artists to found Orion Pictures. Mr. Bernstein conceived of the name of the studio. In an interview with the New York Times in 1992, Mr. Bernstein was quoted as follows: “Orion is the largest constellation; it has five stars, just like us…..”
Bernstein was an executive vice president during the time the company distributed such pictures as Amadeus”, “Platoon”, “Dances with Wolves” and “The Silence of the Lambs”, all of which won Academy Awards for Best Picture. After his recent standout performance in season three of “True Detective” on HBO, Stephen Dorff has been cast to headline the Fox and Entertainment One pilot “Deputy,” Variety has learned.
Dorff will play Deputy Bill Hollister, a career lawman who is very comfortable kicking down doors, but not so handy on the leadership front. Ayer directed Netflix’s hit Will Smith feature film...
Written by Beall with Ayer set to direct, Deputy centers on Deputy Bill Hollister, a career lawman who’s very comfortable kicking down doors and utterly lost in a staff meeting. But when the La County Sheriff drops dead, Bill becomes acting sheriff of Los Angeles County, in charge of 10,000 sworn deputies policing a modern Wild West. The ensemble procedural has the full cooperation of the La Sheriff’s Department.
Beall executive produces with Ayer and Long via their Cedar Park. Like all new projects from indie studios this pitch season, eOne’s Deputy will be a co-production with Fox.
