Nominated for both Best Action Choreography and Best Sound Design at the 29th Hong Kong Film Awards, “14 Blades” did very well in Asia especially in Singapore. Zhao Wei won Best Actress at the Shanghai Film Critics Awards like she did for Mulan the year before.
In 14 Blades, Donnie Yen stars as Qinglong, the commander of Jinyiwei, meaning Brocade Guards as in the Chinese title. They are the Ming Dynasty’s secret police force, very ruthless and have full authority to kill anyone who’s against the Emperor. All the members are orphans, trained from an early age in cruel conditions to become the best cold blooded killers.
Qinglong is given a box that has fourteen specialized blades to carry out his missions. Eight blades are used for torture and interrogations, while five more blades are used for killing purposes, there is one special golden blade, designed for...

Blades of Glory: Lee Brings the Old West to the Ming Dynasty
Hong Kong filmmaker Daniel Lee’s 2010 film, 14 Blades is at last making its way to Us soil this summer. It’s been a curiously long wait considering the film plays like a genre hybrid of Western gunslinger cinema and martial arts aesthetics, and Lee has gone on to direct two other features since completing this one. Amassed with bountiful action sequences and handsome visuals, the expertly utilized special effects will be reason enough for genre fans to enjoy the film. But at a running time of nearly two hours and a slim narrative, the film outweighs its welcome for those hoping for a bit more substance.
Sometime during the Ming Dynasty, a group of assassin warriors known as the Jinyiwei serve the emperor’s will. It’s explained that the Jinyiwei can either represent a help or...

It’s remake time again, as the 2007 Milkyway outing “Eye in the Sky” from director Yau Nai Hoi and producers Johnnie To and Tsui Siu Ming gets a Korean makeover in “Cold Eyes”. The film was directed by duo Jo Eui Seok (“The World of Silence”) and Kim Byung Seo (a noted cinematographer who recently worked on the likes of “Dangerous Liaisons” and “Hindsight”), and stars Sol Kyung Gu (“Public Enemy”), Jung Woo Sung (“Reign of Assassins”), and Han Hyo Ju (“Masquerade”) in the roles originally played by Simon Yam, Tony Leung Ka Fai and Kate Tsui. Pulling in more than five million admissions at the local box office, the film was one of the biggest Korean hits of 2013, and also proved popular with the critics, Han Hyo Ju winning Best Actress at the Blue Dragon Awards – all of which is no mean feat for a remake. The film kicks...

Michael Tse returns yet again as Laughing Gor, the undercover cop character made popular in the Tvb series “E.U.” and “Lives of Omission”, in a sequel to his first 2009 big screen outing “Turning Point”. With Herman Yau, still one of Hong Kong’s hardest working and most under-appreciated directors, back at the helm, the film also welcomes back stars Bosco Wong, Kate Tsui, and Mc Jin, along with a host of new stars adding to the drama including Francis Ng, Chapman To and Kara Hui. The film basically follows on from “Lives of Omission”, with Tse’s Laughing having been sent to prison for the murder of gangster Michael So (Bosco Wong) – actually a front for an undercover investigation into police corruption. Behind bars, Laughing focuses his efforts on trying to get information from an imprisoned and seemingly deranged police narcotics sergeant called Chit (Chapman To). Things become more...

Called Jinyiwei, the Brocade Guards, these warriors operated under their own code of law, led by the most skilled of their number, Qinglong (Yen).Bestowed upon him as leader is a box containing 14 steel blades, eight of which are to be used for interrogation and the remaining six for execution.

Action megastar Donnie Yen adds yet another notch to his ever growing belt with “14 Blades”, the latest wuxia epic from director Daniel Lee, recently responsible for another period set blockbuster in “Three Kingdoms: Resurrection of the Dragon”. In addition to Yen, the film has a mightily impressive supporting cast that includes Vicki Zhao (“Red Cliff”), Taiwanese pop idol Wu Chun (“Butterfly Lovers”), Kate Tsui (recent winner of Best New Performer at the Hong Kong Film Awards for the Milkyway production “Eye in the Sky”), and Singaporean actor Qi Yuwu (“Painted Skin”), with special appearances from genre legends Sammo Hung, Wu Ma and Shaw Brothers favourite Chen Kuan Tai. The film was a smash hit with both the public and the critics, being the top grossing film of the 2010 Chinese New Year holidays, and being nominated for Best Action Choreography and Best Sound Design at the 29th Hong Kong Film Awards.

Not much in the way of new footage, but at least Kate Tsui has managed to escape from being labeled as the "villain with the menacing cleavage," with some action of her own - and since we're there, Tsui plays Tuo, a mortal enemy of the Jinyiwei (the brocade-clad army of the title), the Ming's own rendition of a secret service. According to the official website, she "lure[s] her target into an hallucinogenic state with her movements," which sounds about right.
Daniel Lee's 錦衣衛 (14 Blades) looks to feature the same lavish sets and top notch production values of recent Mainland historical epics, but with a more old school approach to action, as the emphasis on wirefu shows. But while there should be no worries in the action department, and Donnie Yen, Zhao Wei and a few other supporting characters should deliver the goods in terms of acting, the big...

Whatsammata, that teaser trailer for “14 Blades” we posted yesterday not enough for ya? You say you want more Donnie Yen killing people with all manner of blades and Sammo Hung being Sammo Hung? Well dang, ain’t you the lucky one, cause a 3-minute trailer for Daniel Lee’s “14 Blades” just popped up online. Unfortunately it’s still in Chinese, so you probably won’t get any of the plot. Mind you, not that that should stop you from wallowing in the film’s potential badassery. Thanks to reader Rick for the heads up. Starring Donnie Yen, Wei Zhao, Chun Wu, Yuwu Qi, Sammo Hung Kam-Bo, Kuan Tai Chen, Chen Zhi Hui, Ma Wu, Damian Lau, Kate Tsui, Kar-Ying Law, Xiang Dong Xu, and directed by Daniel Lee.

A teaser trailer for Donnie Yen’s latest Chinese costume martial arts epic “14 Blades” has landed online, and oh boy does it look good. I mean really, really good. It looks like the movie that “An Empress and the Warriors” should have been. The focus of the film seems to be directed at the right spot — the action — and not some insipid romance or, worst yet, some perfunctory love triangle. The Daniel Lee-directed film stars Yen and Vicki Zhao, along with Sammo Hung and Damian Lau. Set during the Ming Dynasty the movie will depict the exploits of a group of elite assassins known as the Imperial Guards. Trained since early childhood to become masters of the sword in service of the emperor, these men carried out their tasks with deadly precision. Starring Donnie Yen, Wei Zhao, Chun Wu, Yuwu Qi, Sammo Hung, Kuan Tai Chen, Chen Zhi Hui,...
