Mark Morton, the guitarist who co-founded the heavy-metal group Lamb of God three decades ago, will release a memoir this summer that looks back on the triumphs and tragedies of his life so far.
In the book Desolation: A Heavy Metal Memoir, which will come out June 25, the musician reflects on how he felt like he had to push forward with the band even after the death of his newborn daughter in 2009. That event and the perpetual motion of band life led him to addiction. His story, which he co-wrote with author Ben Opipari,...

P.O.D. have unveiled another new single, “Afraid to Die,” featuring Tatiana Shmayluk of Ukrainian metal band Jinjer.
The track is classic P.O.D. with its fusion of rap and riffs. Frontman Sonny Sandoval’s verses are complimented by clean vocal passages from Shmayluk, and the anthemic sing-a-long chorus harkens back to “Youth of the Nation,” one of the band’s most well-known songs.
“‘Afraid to Die’ is a combination of cryptic and triumphant melodies,” said P.O.D. guitarist Marcos Curiel via a press release. “It has storytelling rhymes and chugged verses, and a wide open, melodic yet semi-morbid, chorus. It’s anthemic In every sense of the word.”
Regarding the collab with Shmayluk, which came to fruition on P.O.D. and Jinjer’s 2022 tour together, Curiel added: “Our dear friend Tatiana Shmayluk offers her unique approach and we had incredible musical chemistry with her. This is P.

Headbangers Boat, the inaugural metal cruise headlined by Lamb of God, experienced a tragic turn early Friday morning (November 3rd) when a 41-year-old male passenger went overboard. A search and rescue mission is currently underway.
In a statement provided to Rock Feed, a spokesperson for the Norwegian Cruise Line offered the following details:
“On the early morning of Friday, Nov. 3, 2023, Norwegian Pearl was notified that a 41-year-old male guest went overboard while the ship was sailing near the Bahamas on its way to Miami. The authorities have been notified and the United States Coast Guard search and rescue operation is underway. The investigation is ongoing, and we will share updates as appropriate. Our thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones during this difficult time.”

Lamb of God’s inaugural Headbangers Boat cruise festival looks to have been a blast so far.
The cruise left port aboard the Norwegian Pearl on Halloween (October 31st) from Miami. We’ve already reported on Randy Blythe (dressed as Elvis) officiating a Halloween wedding aboard the ship, and elsewhere, footage from the boat has been nothing but good vibes.
For instance, a circle pit broke out in the hot tub during Hatebreed’s set. As captured by Heavy Consequence photographer Kevin Wilson, the hot tubbers set down their margaritas and shimmied to a particularly hooky breakdown.
To be honest, this is probably the chillest mosh in Hatebreed history — Jamey Jasta and company’s brand of beatdown hardcore is specifically geared to incite violent mosh pits. Nonetheless, the boat’s crew still put a stop to the hot tub circle pit after a song or two. Safety first!

Lamb of God frontman Randy Blythe turned the band’s inaugural Headbangers Boat cruise into a Vegas wedding chapel on Halloween night (October 31st). The singer officiated a wedding between two cruisers, giving them a metal memory that will last forever.
Headbangers Boat set sail from Miami earlier that day, and Blythe didn’t waste any time making the couple’s dreams come true.
As the story goes, the groom, Ro Kohli (who runs a company called War Machine Merchandise), couldn’t get into a Lamb of God show on Halloween night in 2012. Not wanting to spend the evening alone, he went on Ok Cupid and found a match in the bride, Bic, and asked her out on a date. In a full circle moment, Blythe (dressed as Elvis Presley) married the couple exactly 11 years to the day of their first date.

Lamb of God have offered up “Evidence” — a song previously unavailable in North America — on digital streaming platforms.
The band shared the track to celebrate the the first anniversary of its latest album, Omens. Previously, “Evidence” was only available as a bonus track on the Japanese CD release of the album, but it can now be streamed far and wide.
There’s nothing extraneous about “Evidence.” Belying its prior bonus-track status, the song sees Lamb of God laying down slam riffs and chunked-out breakdowns — perfect pockets for Randy Blythe to inject his growls and rhythmic gutturals. The arrangement takes some surprising turns, with its prog-like Mastodon-ish flow leading to a satiating blastbeat section at one point.
Lamb of God are also commemorating the Omens anniversary on Saturday with the widespread release of their documentary Making Of: Omens, which details the creation of the album. It will be streamable via the band’s YouTube channel.

P.O.D. have returned with the new song “Drop,” featuring guest vocals from Lamb of God frontman Randy Blythe.
“When you hear it, you know it’s P.O.D.!” declared the band’s Sonny Sandoval, and he’s not wrong. The track touches all the P.O.D. bases. Sandoval’s flow is infectious and tight, and heavy rap-metal breakdowns are balanced against more melodic, alt-rock sections.
Blythe’s cameo occurs in the middle break of the song. He growls and narrates vicious lines while guitarist Marcos Curiel’s riffs build to one of the song’s many drops — the track’s title being very appropriate in this case.
“‘Drop’ is another one of a kind, unparalleled banger that sets this band apart from everyone else,” boasted Sandoval.
The San Diego band has been relatively quiet over the past few years. Sandoval and company released a short Christmas lullaby track in 2020; otherwise,...

John Travolta hobnobbed with the guys in Pantera at the metal band’s gig supporting Metallica on Friday (August 25th) at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. The movie star was among a bevy of celebs who made their way backstage, including fellow actor Jason Momoa (who also joined the mosh pit) and Mötley Crüe members Tommy Lee and John 5.
Pantera posted a gallery of backstage pics on Instagram (see below), showing Travolta engaged in conversation with singer Philip Anselmo and others. Other pics show the band greeting Momoa and the Mötley Crüe members.
Current Pantera drummer Charlie Benante also posted his own pics in which he’s chatting up Travolta, and hanging out with Momoa and other celebs.
Travolta is no stranger to the hard rock and metal scene, having starred in the film The Fanatic, directed by Fred Durst. In fact, he once impressed Consequence with his knowledge of Limp Bizkit’s music.

Pantera rang in what would have been the late Dimebag Darrell’s 57th birthday during their show on Sunday (August 20th) in Austin, Texas.
It was fitting that the reunited metal legends were performing in Dimebag’s home state of Texas on the late guitarist’s actual birthday. During a break in the concert, Philip Anselmo and company were joined onstage by Lamb of God’s Randy Blythe and Dimebag’s longtime girlfriend Rita Haney for a round of the guitarist’s favorite drink, a “black-tooth grin”: whiskey with a splash of Coca-Cola.
After Blythe rolled out a beverage cart, Haney began passing out the shots — ostensibly some non-alcoholic, for the sober members of the tour party — Anselmo led the crowd in a round of “Happy Birthday.”

Pantera have been inviting special guests to sing their classic song “Walk” with them during their current North American tour, and at this past Thursday’s show they were joined onstage by Lamb of God’s Randy Blythe and late guitarist Dimebag Darrell’s longtime girlfriend Rita Haney.
Video footage from the concert at Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion in The Woodlands, Texas, shows the revamped Pantera lineup first being joined by Blythe, with Haney quickly following. The two share the mic for the song’s iconic chorus, with frontman Philip Anselmo putting his arm around them.
Lamb of God are supporting Pantera on the North American tour, and Blythe is a longtime friend of the band, so it wasn’t a big surprise seeing him onstage.

What a night! I just got back from the Pantera and Lamb of God concert at the Freedom Mortage Pavilion in Camden, NJ, and I’m still buzzing from the adrenaline. It was one of the best shows I’ve ever seen, and I’ve seen a lot. The crowd was insane, the sound was loud, and the bands were on fire.
Legacy would be a fitting name for this tour, because let no one be mistaken, this is not a Pantera reunion tour by any means, but much more of a statement and tribute to the band’s unrelenting and dynamic legacy. It will never be called a reunion because there is no way that could ever be true, as we are sadly missing two of the band’s founding members, brothers Dimebag Darrell and Vinnie Paul Abbott…and they left some very big shoes to fill.

Lamb of God kicked off their summer tour itinerary in style, with Randy Blythe sporting a new look. The metal frontman cut off his longtime dreadlocks, showing off a new buzz cut at the band’s Wednesday night (July 12th) gig at the Festival D’été De Québec festival in Quebec City, Canada.
The veteran metal act’s first show of the summer featured a 15-song setlist offering a mix of songs from eight albums, including two each from their two most recent LPs: 2022’s Omens and 2020’s self-titled effort. The concert closed with two Ashes of the Wake classics: “Laid to Rest” and “Redneck.”
As Blabbermouth points out, Blythe once told Ketagalan Media that his dreadlocks formed when he “just stopped combing” his hair around 2014. He was once asked by Metal Hammer how much money he’d have to be paid to shave his dreads off, to which he responded,...

Lamb of God frontman Randy Blythe reunited with a security guard named Rachel who appeared in a viral video in which she initially denied the singer entry onto the stage at the 2022 Bloodstock festival. When Lamb of God decided to cover “Wake Up Dead,” the blistering thrash odyssey their tourmates Megadeth released in 1986, they asked themselves how they could make it bigger. So they decided just to ask Megadeth to record it with them. Their new recording of the song features the five members of Lamb of God with additional vocals and guitar parts by Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine and cameos by the rest of his band.

Lamb of God’s upcoming deluxe edition of their self-titled album will feature a typically punishing bonus track, “Ghost Shaped People.” Frontman Randy Blythe asks, “What will you believe? Who will you betray? What’s the cost of victory?” in the song’s chorus, which is sandwiched between the band’s signature cataclysm of chugging guitars and anvil-smashing drums.

With yet another Friday the 13th upon us, it’s high time to dig into a now fairly-outmoded Hollywood practice, the synergistic soundtrack album, as it pertains to Camp Blood’s least favorite son. Today, we celebrate the Friday The 13th franchise by making a playlist of its top soundtrack slices.
As a series, Friday The 13th has run the musical gamut, kicking off at the tail end of disco (as the opening theme music of Friday The 13th Part III can attest), peaking during the hair metal ’80s, and then quite thoroughly exploring a renaissance in metal at the start of the 21st century.
Is this list solely a product of the personal taste of this horror and metal fan? Of course. As such, you’ll notice that Hot Ice does not make the cut. Several of the top entries in this list did not even occupy any pre-end credits screen time,...

With nowhere to play a live gig during social distancing, the members of Lamb of God stayed home to perform a couple of songs off their recently released, self-titled eighth album.
In a video that showcases each of the band’s five members raging out at home, the group performs Lamb of God’s “Checkmate” and “New Colossal Hate,” and they also whipped out one of their calling cards, “Laid to Rest,” which appeared on their major-label debut, Ashes of the Wake.

Although 45 minutes of Middle-Aged White Male Aggression may feel out of pace with the current national moment, Lamb of God frontman Randy Blythe has always written more open-minded and inclusive lyrics than many of his peers — you just have to strain your ears to make sense of his screeds.
When he bellows hoarsely about “The American Scream” on “Checkmate,” one of 10 chugging ragers on the band’s self-titled eighth album, it’s not just generalized hate-the-world enmity but a fierce Trump takedown, with Blythe sarcastically using the phrase “Make America Hate Again.

Lamb of God have shared a thundering new song, “Routes,” which was lyrically inspired by the time frontman Randy Blythe spent protesting the Dakota Access Pipeline at the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation in North Dakota. The song will appear on Lamb of God’s upcoming self-titled album, out June 19th.
“Routes” is a bulldozer of a track — packed with a relentless barrage of drums and riffs — featuring guest vocals from Testament singer Chuck Billy. Blythe’s lyrics paint a vivid portrait of environmental destruction tied to centuries of injustice toward indigenous people.

Lamb of God’s new video for the chest-thumping single “Memento Mori” — which will appear on their upcoming self-titled LP — focuses on a man unaware of a deadly virus spreading across the world.
Singer Randy Blythe says he came up with the concept for the video months before the coronavirus pandemic, but it’s still anxiety-inducing to see the clip’s protagonist falling asleep while the news is on, only to watch a legion of demon zombies — which look like something out of the horror movie Nightbreed — pursuing him as...

“I don’t know what I’d call Teenage Time Killers, but I do know it’s a supergroup of fucking badass musicians and singers,” Corrosion of Conformity drummer Reed Mullin told Rolling Stone in 2015 of his all-star punk-meets-metal side project. Their first album, Greatest Hits Vol. 1, came out that year.
Now, in the wake of Mullin’s death last month, his core collaborators in Teenage Time Killers — guitarist and co-songwriter Mick Murphy, also of My Ruin, and Foo Fighters studio engineer John Lousteau — have released a series of pro-shot...

“‘Checkmate’ brings together all the components of the Lamb of God sound that we’ve been developing over the last two decades, but with the ambition and ferocity that comes with the start of a new chapter for our band,” guitarist Mark Morton said in a statement. “Re-energized and reignited, this is Lamb of God 2020. Lamb of God vocalist Randy Blythe and dub pioneer Lee “Scratch” Perry have joined forces for “Lions,” a new single they contributed to art collective/supergroup Saudade.
The track opens with a peaceful interlude of Perry speaking, as Blythe takes over on vocals. “Honey dripping through the ceiling/On the shifting blue below,” he sings. “Their beauty stings in floating dreams/That let the poison flow.” He uses his heavy-metal vocals to scream through the chorus: “We’ve been pushed to this/We kill with a kiss.”

Lamb of God offset the Los Angeles sunshine with the darkness of "512" during Thursday's episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live!, performing the brooding single on the show's outdoor stage. Led by Randy Blythe's dark bellow and the explosive soloing of guitarist Mark Morton, the metal veterans inspired a crowd mosh pit.
In June, Lamb of God premiered a macabre music video for "512" filled with dead bodies and murderous revenge. The track is featured on the Virginia band's eighth LP, VII: Sturm Und Drang, which was inspired by Blythe's life-changing stint in Prague's Pankrác Prison.

Supergroup compilations can be hit and miss, and although many metal fans in 2015 like to lambaste anyone who isn’t pushing the envelope as far as possible, that can make it far too easy to forget how enjoyable the most base staples of the genre can truly be.
Blisteringly-fast guitar solos, a solid mix of clean and aggressive vocals, thunderous and intricate drum patterns powering everything – it’s clear when the Metal Allegiance project came together (comprised of everyone from Lamb of God’s Randy Blythe to Dream Theatre’s Mike Portnoy, Pantera’s Phil Anselmo and more), they simply wanted to put out a record that would speak to the times, whilst also emitting a timeless quality itself.
Each song features the same core setup of Testament’s Alex Skolnick on lead guitar and Portnoy on drums (with Megadeth’s Dave Ellefson on bass for the...

Dave Brockie has been memorialized again - only this time in a manner that would've made his monstrous alter-ego Oderus Urungus chortle with glee. The late Gwar frontman was given a Viking funeral at the annual Gwar-b-q in Richmond, Va on Friday, in a ritual that saw his Oderus costume being laid on a ship and set ablaze in accordance with Norse tradition. The singer, who died of a heroin overdose in March at the age of 50, was eulogized at the event by friend and Lamb of God frontman Randy Blythe, who stated: “Dave is the only motherfucker I know who has to get put away twice. He’s too big for one fucking funeral.” Blythe later posted an image of the burning ship to Instagram along with the message: "Tonight we sent Oderus home in a fitting manner at the public memorial for Dave Brockie. A blazing Viking ship...

He spent decades dressing up as Oderus Urungus and rocking out for thousands of fans, but Dave Brockie has sadly died at age 50.
The Gwar frontman/founder was found inside his Richmond, Virginia home on Sunday by his roommate around 7pm.
And while Brockie’s cause of death is still under investigation, the local police department has confirmed that there were no drugs found on the premises.
Bandmate Mike Bishop told press, “Dave was one of the funniest, smartest, most creative and energetic persons I’ve ever known. He was brash sometimes, always crass, irreverent, he was hilarious in every way. But he was also deeply intelligent and interested in life, history, politics and art.”
And fellow musician Randy Blythe added a message to his Instagram account- "My friend Dave Brockie, Aka Oderus Urungus, the singer of Gwar, has left the building & taken off back to his home planet. Dave...

Richmond, Va. (AP) — Dave Brockie, who as "Oderus Urungus" fronted the alien-costumed heavy metal band Gwar during graphic and fake-blood-soaked stage shows for more than three decades, has died. He was 50. Officers were called to Brockie's home Sunday evening and found the singer dead inside the home, Richmond police spokeswoman Dionne Waugh said Monday. Detectives don't suspect foul play at this time and the medical examiner's office will determine cause of death, Waugh said. The band founded in 1984 is known for its comically grotesque costumes, stage antics and vulgar lyrics. Gwar was nominated for a Grammy Award for best long-form music video in 1993 for "Phallus in Wonderland" but lost to "Diva" by Annie Lennox. It also was nominated for best metal performance for "S.F.W." in 1996 but lost to "Happiness In Slavery" by Nine Inch Nails. Randy Blythe, the lead vocalist for Virginia-based metal band Lamb of God, fondly recalled...

When director Don Argott first teamed with Lamb of God for a documentary, the idea was to profile fans of the Grammy-nominated heavy metal band in different countries during a 2012 tour. But when the band arrived in the Czech Republic late that June, frontman Randy Blythe was arrested:. He was accused of pushing a young fan who’d rushed the stage back into the audience at a show in Prague two years earlier — causing a head injury that later took the fan’s life. Keeping the cameras rolling required trust. “Don was there and filmed my wife coming to visit me,...

While making the rounds in support of As the Palaces Burn – the documentary, in theaters now, chronicling Lamb of God frontman Randy Blythe’s legal ordeal and trial in the Czech Republic last year – Blythe and director Don Argott took a minute to sit down for a Pop Culture Personality Test. Unsurprising: Blythe loves the Sex Pistols and doesn’t see the point to writing love songs. Somewhat more surprising: He really likes the Pet Shop Boys, even though they are “the antithesis of everything that I stand for.” Watch it below.

Mark Kermode: a would-be rockumentary changes tack in gripping fashion when Lamb of God's singer stands trial for manslaughter
Virginia-based metal merchants Lamb of God make music that sounds like the demon Pazuzu attempting to remove your ears with a cheese-grater, but which means much to millions – specifically the hardcore fans on whom this would-be rockumentary originally intended to focus. Yet upon arrival in the Czech Republic as part of their 2012 world tour, singer Randy Blythe was arrested and charged with manslaughter in connection with the death of a concert-goer two years earlier. Paroled only after lengthy negotiations (he was held for 38 days), Blythe opted to return to Prague to stand trial, where he faced the very real possibility of a lengthy prison sentence. As it veers unexpectedly from Spinal Tap-esque concert movie to gripping courtroom drama, Don Argott's access-all-areas account unearths an admirable sense of emerging...

There's been a lot of talk recently about the glut of indie films being distributed and the increased competition for screens and audiences. But through an innovative release strategy via Philadelphia-based digital distributor Specticast, the new documentary "As the Palaces Burn," about heavy metal band Lamb of God, will screen in over 400 theaters around the world (find out where the film is screening here). The idea is to turn the documentary about about Lamb of God and the band's front singer Randy Blythe's manslaughter trial in the Czech Republic into a special event. The film itself follows the bizarre odyssey of Lamb of God's world tour-turned-courtroom drama with exclusive courtroom footage and candid interviews from the trial and its aftermath. Although the doc received rave reviews out of Idfa (including from our own Eric Kohn), it didn't land any traditional distribution offers. But "As The Palaces Burn" director Don Argott was.

Lamb of God's singer Randy Blythe's arrest in Prague in 2012 turned this rockumentary into a courtroom drama
This is one of those documentaries, like Catfish for example, that was supposed to be one thing and evolved into something else because of a dramatic turn of events halfway through shooting. In this case, director Don Argott set out to follow Lamb of God, a successful, greying metal band from Virginia on their international tour to illustrate how this group in particular and metal in general unites fans in disparate countries. It's an idea we've surely seen a few times already in rock docs, but then the Weird Thing happened: lead singer Randy Blythe got arrested in Prague in 2012 for the manslaughter of Daniel Nosek, a local fan whom Blythe allegedly pushed off the stage during a concert. Thereafter, the film turns into a courtroom drama of sorts, with a predictable narrative arc about guilt,...

Don Argott's 2011 documentary profiled a heavy metal addict, Pentagram vocalist Bobby Liebling, just as he hit rock bottom and decided to fight for a comeback. In "As the Palaces Burn," Argott follows another famous metalhead, Lamb of God's growling songster Randy Blythe, who has already put his hard drinking days behind him, but remains haunted by them. At first simply a look at the band's recent tour, the movie blossoms into a gripping legal tale when Blythe faces unexpected murder charges. Whereas "Last Days Here" explored the self-destructive power of stardom, "As the Palaces Burn" achieves an even greater impact by universalizing that theme and exposing the challenges that persist even when it seems like the worst is over. Like the music at its center, "As the Palaces Burn" foregrounds deep-seated anguish and finds tenderness at its core. To be a great frontman you must possess a commanding presence. As Quentin Crisp rightly put it, charisma is “the ability to influence without logic.”
People often get confused between what makes a great frontman and what makes a charismatic frontman. Lou Reed, Alex Turner, Ian Curtis, Brandon Flowers and Liam Gallagher are all amazing frontman but to label them ‘charismatic’ is something totally different. There may be some names you don’t agree with, some you’re surprised are in there or perhaps you’ll end up swearing at your laptop screen because Bruce Dickinson and Randy Blythe weren’t listed: this isn’t a Metal list by any means. Nor is it a list that favours pure Indie. It’s a collection of 15 frontmen from all eras of popular culture, neatly gathered in one place for your entertainment.

Following their concert movie Killadelphia and tour film Walk With Me In Hell, a new documentary about the Virginian metallers Lamb of God makes its debut next month. Director Don Argott was already shooting with the band last year, when the story of vocalist Randy Blythe's arrest for manslaughter - after the death of 19-year-old fan Daniel Nosek in a stage-diving incident - erupted around them. You can get a sense of the drama that unfolded in our exclusive trailer for As The Palaces Burn.Lamb of God exist in that strange hinterland where they're extremely successful in metal terms, but still hardly a household name. Formed in Richmond, Virginia in 1990, theirs was a gradual build rather than an overnight success, and their arguable "breakout" didn't happen until the Sacrament album in 2006. They continued from strength to strength subsequently, until Blythe's Prague imprisonment and trial forced a tense hiatus.

In 1996, the Virginia Renaissance Faire opened its annual summer festivities in Fredericksburg on elaborate fairgrounds filled with fairytale buildings. But it wasn't long before extreme heat, rain and humidity made it unbearable for the guests – especially the folks wearing layers of period costumes – and the original grounds were abandoned just three years later. (The Faire is now located in Spotsylvania, Va.) Photo © Ayne Bales Photography The elements soon took over the former site, essentially turning the entire village into a massive gothic horror movie set. It now draws urban explorers by the droves, and photographers continue to document its crumbling castle turrets, drawbridges and inns. Photo © D.
