The Carter family made a surprise appearance at the 2024 Grammy Awards as the Recording Academy presented Jay-Z with the Global Impact Award — and Shawn Carter didn’t hold back as he tore into the ceremony’s complicated history with hip-hop and Beyoncé consistently being snubbed in the major categories.
The rapper took the stage hand in hand with his daughter Blue Ivy as Beyoncé cheered them both on from the audience. At the start of his speech, he joked that his Grammy Awards used to be used as sippy cups for their daughter,...

Just hours after Lizzo was hit with a second lawsuit with claims of creating a hostile work environment, the star accepted the Quincy Jones Humanitarian Award at the Black Music Action Coalition (Bmac) gala in Los Angeles.
After skipping the red carpet portion of the evening, Lizzo took the stage at the Beverly Hilton hotel following an introduction by a group of her Big Grrrl dancers. Wiping away tears, she told the crowd, “I really needed this right now. God’s timing is on time.”
“I didn’t write a speech because I don’t know what to say in times like these,” Lizzo continued, thanking Bmac for the honor and noting that this award was different than others she has won because “humanitarianism in its nature is thankless, it’s selfless. To be kind to someone isn’t a talent; everyone can do it, it’s a gift that you give.

Lizzo’s spokesman fired back as the singer was hit with another lawsuit; this time from someone working in the tour wardrobe department.
In court docs obtained by Et on Thursday, Asha Daniels — who was hired by Amanda Nomura to join Lizzo’s 2023 tour — had filed legal docs stating she was made to work extremely long hours, forced to hear racist and fatphobic comments and more.
However, Lizzo’s spokesman, Stefan Friedman, insisted, “As Lizzo receives a Humanitarian Award tonight from the Black Music Action Coalition for the incredible charitable work she has done to lift up all people, an ambulance-chasing lawyer tries to sully this honour by recruiting someone to file a bogus, absurd publicity-stunt lawsuit who, wait for it, never actually met or even spoke with Lizzo.”
He added, “We will pay this as much attention as it deserves. None.”

On Sunday night at the 65th Annual Grammy Awards, hip-hop pioneer Dr. Dre was honored with an award that will newly bear his name – the Dr. Dre Global Impact Award. The Collective was established after the mass protests of 2020, fueled by the murder of George Floyd and the killing of Breonna Taylor by police. And for some, Dre’s moniker upon this award also fuels indignance...

A vulnerable Lil Wayne and a teary-eyed Missy Elliott accepted the Recording Academy and Black Music Collective’s Dr. Dre Global Impact Award — which was renamed Thursday night as they also honored Dr. Dre.
Lil Wayne, who signed his record deal at 12 and turned 40 in September, won over the audience with a touching and authentic speech that ended the night.
“I want you all to know that I don’t get honored,” he said at the Hollywood Palladium as singers, rappers, producers, songwriters, label executives and other industry players cheered him on. “Where I’m from, New Orleans, you’re not supposed to do this.”
“I walked into my mama’s room when I was 14. She asked me for a kid because my dad was killed. And her son had just blown up and went on his first tour. When I came home she said, ‘Son, I can’t live in this house by myself.

Danyel Smith knows charts and awards are flawed metrics of success, but she also understands they are the ones we have, and wants to see Black women earn their due. This is not an abstract goal to the legendary music journalist. In a call with Rolling Stone from her Southern California home, with her Cairn Terrier puppy playing with a squeak toy in the background, she fires off some means of respecting the genius of Black women in pop: documentaries focused on their art and not their traumas, magazine covers...

Rarely do music documentaries transcend the conventional biopic form to appeal beyond its subject’s existing fan base, but one hopes a filmmaker would at least attempt to surpass mere hagiography. When the subject is also the executive producer, however, all bets at objectivity are off. The subject in this case is Kid Cudi (neé Scott Miscudi), the risk-taking alternative hiphop artist who upended the music industry with his self-released single “Day ‘N’ Night” in 2009, also known for hits like “Pursuit of Happiness” and “Solo Dolo.” Fans will praise this film as yet another brave sacrifice at the altar of artistic vulnerability — because that’s what “A Man Named Scott” wants you to believe. But

There’s perhaps no one in the music industry more well-positioned for leadership than Ethiopia Habtemariam, who became chairman and CEO of Motown Records last week.
Habtemariam, 41, has worked in music since she was a teenager, interning for Laface and Elektra. She forwent a college education and worked up the ranks in music publishing at Universal before becoming Motown’s president in 2014, where she ushered in a renaissance for the historic record label — securing major partnerships with Quality Control and Blacksmith and bringing in a roster of prolific hip-hop artists.

Last Thursday, at a West Hollywood mansion-turned-content house owned by social-media app Triller, Swae Lee contemplated his business strategy while eating buffalo chicken bites.
Lee spent the evening alternating between snacking on the microwavable bites (catered by Frank’s Red Hot), livestreaming on Twitch (with several influencers and esports competitors surrounding him) and getting trounced 43-0 in a game of Madden on the as-yet-unreleased PS5 — essentially, living a standard gamer night, if the gamer in question happened to be a rich and famous hip-hop artist.

Genna Batson, who graduated last month from Syracuse University’s Bandier Program with a music business degree, was about as poised for a career in the concert industry as a senior without a nepotistic benefactor could be. She’d focused on the touring business early in her college days, serving as talent buyer and co-director of the school’s concert board, and held internships at industry titans Live Nation, Red Light Management and Superfly, where last summer she interned as a sponsorship coordinator for the Outside Lands festival in San Francisco. She’d secured a contracted position for this summer in the same role, and a permanent job looked promising.
But then came the pandemic, which in a matter of days flattened the entire concert industry — the financial engine of the music business, which touring trade Pollstar had projected would generate $12.2 billion in box office this year. Every major concert...

Jamila Thomas and Brianna Agyemang made no mention of silence, let alone a black box, when they called on their peers in the music industry to devote Tuesday, June 2nd, to a new initiative, #TheShowMustBePaused. The idea was to force the industry — which is built on black talent, but still largely run by white people — to take a long look at itself and consider, perhaps, where the same white supremacy and privilege that led to the killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and others, may be lurking in its own structures and practices.

Since the pandemic began, every record labels’ marketing team has been throwing around the same buzzword phrase: “getting creative.”
Traditional album marketing tactics like touring — which is essential for developing artists who need to build up a new audience and strengthen relationships with their existing fanbase — have gone by the wayside. Livestreaming, now that the lockdown has stretched two months, is oversaturated with artists small and large. With the physical world more or less off limits, artists and labels are trying to find new ways to cut through the noise...

The American Cancer Society (Acs) is teaming up with celebrity ambassadors this month to encourage their families, friends, fans and followers alike to “Get #YOUnited” in the fight against breast cancer by purchasing celebrity designed merchandise and giving donations.
With this new campaign, Acs has engaged notable pop culture figures to become ambassadors in championing this fight, such as mega producer DJ Khaled, multi-platinum artist, global philanthropist French Montana, three-time Grammy nominated artist Jhenè Aiko, and singer and actress, Kristin Chenoweth. While hundreds of thousands of Acs’ “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer” participants will be rallying in their local communities throughout the month of October, these key influencers will leverage their celebrity platform to promote the “YOUnited” theme on social media – joining Acs’ collective national movement to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer, and coming together to help save lives from this disease.
