[This story includes major spoilers from the Only Murders in the Building season three finale.]
Season three of Only Murders in the Building ended with another, well, murder. But this time, the victim will hit close to home for the starring trio, especially for Charles (Steve Martin).
The final moments of the season three finale, “Opening Night,” saw Sazz (Jane Lynch) fall to the floor of Charles’ kitchen after being shot in the chest through the window. It’s probably safe to assume next season’s murderer hoped to take down Martin’s character, but confused him with his longtime stunt double. Before the screen cuts to black, Sazz is seen attempting to write something on Charles’ colorful floor with blood from her chest.
While fans will have to wait until Only Murders in the Building season four — which was announced Tuesday morning — to see who wants to kill Charles and why, showrunner John Hoffman teased what...

Only Murders in the Building has been renewed for a fourth season on Hulu.
The news comes as the finale of season three dropped Tuesday and left the series that stars Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez on a cliffhanger, setting it up for another season in which the trio solves a murder mystery via their true-crime podcast.
Season three of the series welcomed the addition of guest-stars such as Meryl Streep, Paul Rudd, Jesse Williams and Ashley Park, as the group worked on a Broadway play directed by Short’s character. Short and the cast are forced to pivot after a murder occurs that threatens the production, and the characters are left with the task of constructing a musical, scored by Tony-Award winning composers, as well as solving the crime.
Asked whether Streep and Williams may return in season four, showrunner John Hoffman tells The Hollywood Reporter that there is “no greater hope.

Tuesday’s episode of “Only Murders in the Building” Season 3 will have its own “Father of the Bride” moment, with Selena Gomez, Martin Short and Steve Martin donned in wedding attire in a new sneak peek released Monday.
The trio can be seen running toward a courtroom before being stopped by a security guard who asks if they have an appointment.
“It’s my wedding ma’am,” Mabel responds.
“And you guys are what her two dads?” the guard asks.
“That’s right, we’re the father of the bride,” Charles replies, to which Oliver adds “Oh that’s fun.”

In the early planning days for Season 3 of “Only Murders in the Building,” showrunner John Hoffman and the rest of the writing team knew the Hulu comedy’s central trio would have to butt heads.
At the end of Tuesday’s episode, Oliver (Martin Short) wipes away the ‘f—ing pig’ message left on Ben Glenroy’s (Paul Rudd) mirror in an effort to protect Loretta (Meryl Streep). He immediately gets into a heated argument with Mabel (Selena Gomez) and Charles (Steve Martin) over his decision. The conversation, which reveals Charles punched Ben on the night of the murder and Mabel was being courted by Cinda Canning (Tina Fey), ends with Charles quitting “Death Rattle Dazzle” and Mabel leaving to investigate Ben’s death on her own.
Hoffman said that the fight was a “big moment” and a “very crux point” for the trio that audiences hadn’t seen before.

Each of those connections brought new developments around the third season’s central mystery, involving the murder of Ben Glenroy (Paul Rudd).
“We’ve never really done that but it felt like a good crux halfway through the season to go, ‘let’s dive into that personal relationship story for each of them’ and watch this train of some feeling is happening simultaneous with a real complication around the case,” showrunner John Hoffman told TheWrap in an interview facilitated by his personal publicist in accordance with WGA guidelines.
In Oliver and Loretta’s (Meryl Streep) case, the pair go on a “lovely, wild, complicated” date that...

“Only Murders in the Building” leveraged the full talents of Meryl Streep in Season 3, including her singing abilities. Episode 3 closed out with a powerful ballad, titled “Look for the Light,” performed by Streep and Ashley Park that was written for the show by Benj Pasek, Justin Paul and Sara Bareilles.
Showrunner John Hoffman told TheWrap that Streep immediately fell in love with the song when she first heard it over Zoom.
“I’ll never forget playing her Sara Bareilles singing that song, with Justin Paul and Benj Pasek having just composed it,” Hoffman recalled. “My favorite moment was she was listening, and Sara’s just weaving this beautiful melody and the lyrics together and then she hits this line ‘My love is a lighthouse. So darling, my darling, look for the light.’ I watch Meryl just go ‘Oh’ and she left the screen and I thought ‘Ok, we’re in a good place here.

Spoiler Alert: This interview contains spoilers from the first two episodes of “Only Murders in the Building” Season 3, “The Show Must…” and “The Beat Goes On,” now streaming on Hulu.
When “Only Murders in the Building” picks up at the start of Season 3, fans aren’t greeted with the familiar faces of crime-solving trio Mabel (Selena Gomez), Oliver (Martin Short) and Charles (Steve Martin). Instead, they’re dropped into a 1962 production of “No Strings” on Broadway, seen through the eyes of a pigtailed 10-year-old later revealed to be actor (and murder suspect) Loretta Durkin, portrayed as an adult by Meryl Streep.
For series co-creator and writer John Hoffman, who also directed the first two episodes of the new season, meeting Streep for the first time was daunting — until she revealed a surprising connection to her character that put him immediately at ease.

This is what they call a showstopper: At the end of Only Murders In the Building‘s second season, podcasting crime-solvers Mabel Mora (Selena Gomez), Charles-Haden Savage (Steve Martin), and Oliver Putnam (Martin Short) stumbled upon a new case when theater director Oliver’s play featuring former TV icon Charles was very dramatically halted by the onstage death of his costar Ben Glenroy (Paul Rudd). “As a powerful film actor with an enormous and acidic ego, it’s fair to say he’d created a long list of individuals who’d like to see him dead,” offers executive producer Jess Rosenthal. (Rudd will appear frequently in flashbacks.) “We hope, by the end of the season, when all of Ben’s nuances and history have been revealed, our audience will have fallen in love with him too.” Among those who may have wanted to bring down the curtain permanently on A-lister...
