- In the mid-1980's, Joanna traveled multiple times to Leningrad, Russia, where she used cassette tapes to secretly record rock music by prohibited underground Russian bands. She smuggled her tapes and photographs out of Russia with some help from diplomatic officials. Then she produced an L.P. Record with the music of Akvarium, Kino, Alisa, and Strannye Igry.
- They couldn't believe there could be rock and roll in Russia. So then when I started bringing back some cassettes with music to play or some photos, I saw how everybody was shocked....I realized that I had a powerful tool to open up Americans' eyes that there was something going on behind the Iron Curtain.
