You can’t judge a book by its cover, but in comics we do. That’s what sells it. Oftentimes, comics retailers need to make pre-ordering decisions based largely on just a comic’s cover.
Comics, like people, should be enjoyed for what’s on the inside. Corny but true. But like the B-side of a vinyl record, sometimes there’s glory on the flipside, like with comic book back covers.
Emil Novak, Sr. runs a great store in Buffalo called Queen City Bookstore. It’s overflowing with comics and lost treasures, most reflecting Emil’s ravenous appetite for great comics. During my last visit there, I stumbled across The Spirit: The First 93 Dailies reprint comic from 1977. The front cover sported a heroic Eisner Spirit image, but the back cover, showing an exhausted Spirit collapsed in the snow was the cool part. And the courageous use of negative space really stood out.

The madness that is San Diego Comic-Con gave way to the easy fun of Baltimore Comic-Con. Now Geek Culture gets ready for the last big comic convention of the year, New York Comic Con, with anxiety and anticipation.
But it’s not really as simple as that. There have been plenty of really good conventions each and every week. And there’s more being planned.
So even though I was still a little “space happy” (as Mr. Sulu once said) from the Star Trek: Mission New York Convention, I put on my favorite convention shoes and made my way to the Rochester Comic Con – which they call RocCon.
A little background: I grew up in the rolling countryside of the Finger Lakes. But these last few years – it simultaneously seems like both a lifetime and the blink of an eye – I lived in the metro NYC area. There I...

Quiet Earth reader Avery pointed us towards a cool new indie horror coming from Nightmare Kinetics called Banshee. From the looks of the trailer, cinematographer turned director Emil Novak has made the best of a tight budget by merging some great editing and photography techniques with top-notch make-up FX.
Mysterious Banshee eggs have been shipped to American from Ireland. They are raised to fly and live in an old unused train terminal in Buffalo NY. A wailing sound can be heard when death is close. And they are hungry!
You can check out the trailer after the break. It starts off slow but builds to show off it's jittery weirdness. For more info on the still in production Banshee you can check out the film's Myspace page.
