Then, until 1987, head of the Department of Extracurricular Education in the Diocese of Aachen. 1987/88 Federal Executive Director of the Women's Union of the CDU. 1988 to 1995 director of the Cusanuswerk.
Member of the Central Committee of German Catholics.
Since 1998 Deputy Chairwoman of the CDU in Germany. 2001 to 2005 Member of the State Parliament of Baden-Württemberg; 1995 to 2005 Minister for Education, Youth and Sports in Baden-Württemberg.
Member of the Bundestag since 2005; Federal Minister of Education and Research since November 2005.
