Suzy Eddie Izzard (“Stay Close”) and Ed Speelers (“Outlander”) are the new additions to the cast of “Midas Man,” the delayed film on The Beatles manager Brian Epstein that has now wrapped filming.
The film began production with Jonas Akerlund (“Lords of Chaos”) as director, who departed the project for unknown reasons. Sara Sugarman (“Vinyl”) was attached to the project for a year before Joe Stephenson (“Doctor Jekyll”) stepped in. Stephenson has just wrapped the shoot, canning what will be 95% of the completed film, Variety understands.
Written by Brigit Grant, the film follows Epstein, manager of The Beatles from 1962 until his untimely death at the age of 32 in 1967. Epstein’s impact extended beyond the Fab Four, encompassing British Invasion acts such as Gerry and the Pacemakers, Billy J. Kramer and the Dakotas.
Jacob Fortune-Lloyd (“The Queens Gambit”) plays Epstein. The ensemble cast includes Emily Watson, Eddie Marsan and Jay Leno as Ed Sullivan.

Suzy Eddie Izzard and Ed Speleers (Downton Abbey) are among the actors who have joined the supporting cast of Midas Man, the feature biopic of Beatles Manager Brian Epstein.
In the pic, Izzard portrays British music promoter Allan Williams, famously known as “The Man Who Gave Away The Beatles,” while Ed Speleers is Tex Ellington, Epstein’s love interest. Other additions include Darci Shaw (The Colour Room), who plays singer Cilla Black, and Milo Parker (Mr. Holmes) is Epstein’s longtime assistant, Alastair Taylor.
Previous cast attached to the project included actors Lukas Gage, Bill Milner, and Rosie Day. We understand the changes were due to scheduling issues because of delays to production following multiple creative changes to the pic. Last week, we reported that UK director Joe Stephenson (Doctor Jekyll) quietly took the reins earlier this year from previous filmmaker Sara Sugarman (Vinyl), who left after what sources described...

Exclusive: It’s been a long and winding road but Beatles manager movie Midas Man has finally reached post-production having recently taken on a third director to get it over the line.
UK director Joe Stephenson (Doctor Jekyll) quietly took the reins earlier this year from previous filmmaker Sara Sugarman (Vinyl) who left after what sources described to us as creative differences and scheduling issues.
Sugarman herself took over in late 2021 from filmmaker Jonas Åkerlund (Polar) who also left during shoot after not seeing eye to eye with producers.
The Queen’s Gambit actor Jacob Fortune-Lloyd stars in the biopic as The Beatles manager Brian Epstein. Also starring are Emily Watson, Eddie Marsan, Lukas Gage, Bill Milner, Rosie Day as Cilla Black and Jay Leno as Ed Sullivan.

Mark Rylance as Maurice Flitcroft in The Phantom Of The Open. Photo credit Nick Wall. Courtesy of Sony Pictures Classics.
In the charming true-story comedy Phantom Of The Open, Mark Rylance plays the worst golfer in British Open history, Maurice Flitcroft, a middle-aged working class bloke who accidentally got into the storied competition, and then became a folk hero for trying to do it again and again, haunting the tournament. Mark Rylance (Bridge Of Spies) and Sally Hawkins (The Shape Of Water), as Flitcroft’s supportive wife Jean, are both absolute charmers in this very funny yet uplifting British comedy about a very British eccentric who believed anything was possible. Although Flitcroft’s performance in the British Open earned him the moniker “worst golfer in the world,” it actually was the first round of golf Flitcroft had ever played, having just taken up the sport after being laid off from...

Every once in a while, a film comes along that simply makes you feel good. It may not be a superlative piece of cinema, nor may it feature virtuoso performances from all involved, but it has something that well, just works and it makes the whole thing that much more enjoyable. The Phantom of the Open is precisely such a film. It is an engaging and heart-warming piece of entertainment that shines its beacon of hope over its entire running time.
The film tells the stirring true tale of one Maurice Flitcroft (Mark Rylance), a crane operator in Barrow-in-Furness who, in 1976, through a series of befuddling events, earned a place in the qualifying round of the British Open Golf Championship, even though he had never actually played the game before. Consequently, he produced the worst round in the history of the Open, incurring the wrath of the golfing establishment, while...

Exclusive: Filming on Beatles manager movie Midas Man did not restart last month as planned.
The plan was for filming to recommence in late November but the restart has been pushed to late January as new director Sara Sugarman gets acclimatized and the production has a planned pause over Christmas. The film’s original director Jonas Akerlund left the project in mid-November. Some of the original crew also left.
The independent movie will have had a three-month break from filming by the time cameras roll again and multiple people working on the film have now expressed concern to us about the project’s funding. We understand the feature has not been bonded.
However, the production tells us there are no funding or scheduling issues: “There is no delay. Midas Man filming remains very much on schedule to complete the movie. The new production team is now on board. U.S.

Netflix’s The Letter for the King adapts Tonke Dragt’s classic fantasy novel as an awe-inspiring television series.
The Letter for the King is a Netflix fantasy offering that, in the recent wake of The Witcher’s popularity, seems so abundantly tailor-made for transitional viewing that it won’t require any of its famed algorithms for a suggestion.
Much like The Witcher, Netflix’s The Letter for the King is based on a book, in this case key female fantasy writer Tonke Dragt’s 1962 Dutch novel, De brief voor de Koning, an acclaimed, million-plus-selling quasi-medieval story about a young squire who becomes entrusted with the delivery of the titular memo, on which the fate of the entire kingdom hangs. The book – reprinted frequently and in several languages – has been adapted for musical theater and had a 2008 movie adaptation released in its native Netherlands.

Tale of Tales is a peculiar film and it’s difficult to know where to start with it. It has been directed by Matteo Garrone, who is best known for the Italian gangster film Gomorrah, a film so naturalistic in its approach, it almost felt like a documentary. Which makes Tale of Tales, a retelling of three archetypal fairystories with a surreal dream-like approach, a surprise straight out of leftfield.
The three interwoven stories take place in separate kingdoms. In the first, Salma Hayek’s queen uses dark magic to finally give her a son (Christian Lees), but becomes violently jealous when her progeny prefers the company of his mysterious doppelganger (Jonah Lees) to her.

Even though fairy tales themselves have often been dark throughout the years, the translation to film from book form has almost exclusively been directed towards young audiences. Occasionally we get more adult themed fairy tales, but they tend to be few and far between. Lost a bit in the Tribeca shuffle for me was the release last weekend of the new movie from Matteo Garrone, the fantasy film of sorts Tale of Tales. It’s a real unique flick, having debuted last year at the Cannes Film Festival before finally now in theatrical release, as of the weekend. It’s interesting enough that I wanted to make a quick mention of it, as it’s really something else. The film is, more or less, a collection of a few fairy tales, just given a different spin than usual. There’s three main ones, including the obsessive quest of the Queen...

Chad Michael Murray is joining the “Million Dollar Quartet.” Well, not really, because that was technically Elvis, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins — but Murray will play rock ‘n’ roll pioneer Sam Phillips on Cmt’s upcoming “Million Dollar Quartet.” Additionally, Jennifer Holland will play wife Becky Phillips; Margaret Anne Florence portrays his assistant-turned-girlfriend Marion Keisker. They’ll join Drake Milligan (Elvis Presley), Kevin Fonteyne (Johnny Cash), Christian Lees (Jerry Lee Lewis) and Jonah Lees (Jimmy Swaggart) on the small-screen drama. In real-life, Phillips founded Sun Records, breaking and guiding young musicians like Elvis, Cash, Lewis, Perkins, and Ike Turner.

Cannes — Once upon a time there were fairy tales that were strange and horrific. Fairy tales that were meant to entertain and to enlighten. Fairy tales that weren't just meant for young children. Italian filmmaker Matteo Garrone takes you back to that time with "Tale of Tales," his loose adaptation of Giambattista Basile's "The Tale of Tales, or Entertainment for Little Ones," which screened Wednesday night at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival. The result is a slightly bumpy two hours of storytelling, but it's peppered with wonder and unexpected humor. Best known for his critically acclaimed thriller "Gomorrah," Garrone has fashioned a lose narrative around three nearby kingdoms in Basile's tales. The main story, if there is one, centers on a distraught, barren Queen (Salma Hayek) who's husband, the King of Longtrellis (John C. Reilly), makes a deal with a mysterious charlatan (Franco Pistoni) in order to get her pregnant.
