Paris-based Reservoir Docs has acquired worldwide sales rights excluding Italy to “A Sudden Glimpse to Deeper Things,” a theatrical documentary by Scottish-Irish director Mark Cousins, featuring the voice of Tilda Swinton.
The film, described by the producers as “visually ravishing,” explores the art of the 20th century Scottish painter Wilhelmina Barns-Graham.
Swinton will voice the artist’s innermost thoughts, reading from her private diaries and notebooks, which have never before been made public.
The film is in late post-production for release in 2024. It is produced by Mary Bell and Adam Dawtrey for BofA Productions, and co-funded by the National Lottery via Screen Scotland, with the support of the Wilhelmina Barns-Graham Trust. I Wonder Pictures has acquired Italian rights from the producers.

You might find yourself looking at the world in a very different way after watching Mark Cousins’ latest documentary “The Story of Looking,” the closing night film of this year’s Sheffield DocFest.
It’s an uplifting meditation on the power of looking, all at a time when we are more assailed by images than ever. The film begins as Cousins is preparing for surgery to restore his vision, and sees him explore the role that visual experience plays in our lives. It’s a kaleidoscopic, idiosyncratic and deeply personal project – almost a call for the viewer to embrace the “mindfulness” of looking.
Cousins has been making films for more than 30 years, including the Peabody Award winning 15-hour “The Story of Film: An Odyssey.”
He thinks we’re living through a golden age of documentaries, although it’s not without problems.

During lockdown multi-prized film director and historian Mark Cousins found out he had a problem with his eyesight. He decided to turn it into a film in which he imagines “the momentous role that looking has played in his own life and the history of humanity,” as the logline reads.
Cousins’ latest film, which is based on his book “The Story of Looking,” is being presented as a work-in-progress at Switzerland’s Visions du Réel festival. It marks the latest of several film essays from Cousins who made his name with the Peabody Award winning 15-hour “The Story of Film: An Odyssey.” His “Women Make Film: A New Road Movie Through Cinema” scored the award for innovative storytelling at the European Film Awards last December. Cousins also won a special Cannes Camera d’Or commendation in 2018 for “The Eyes of Orson Welles.”

Janus Films has acquired “The Eyes of Orson Welles” for the U.S. and will give the documentary, which premiered in the Cannes Classics lineup, a 2019 release. Billed as a love letter to Welles, Mark Cousins’ film is a portrait of the legendary actor and director through the prism of his many paintings and drawings.
At Cannes, the film garnered a special-distinction commendation in the Golden Eye Documentary Award. Its Cannes debut was especially noteworthy as another Welles project – Netflix’s completion and restoration of Welles’ unfinished movie “The Other Side of the Wind” – was pulled as the streamer said it would not attend the festival.
London-based Dogwoof is handling sales of “The Eyes of Orson Welles” and did the U.S. deal. It will also release the film in the U.K. on Aug. 17. The feature documentary was produced by Bofa, in association with the BBC and Filmstruck, and...

A new rule put in place by the British Academy Of Film And Television Arts (BAFTA) is preventing high-profile movies including Clint Eastwood's Letters From Iwo Jima from being entered into the organization's 2007 ceremony. In previous years, any film released before the end of March in the UK was eligible for Bafta consideration. However, bosses have now decided all movies must come out before the ceremony, to be held on February 11 in London. This ruling means Oscar hopeful Letters From Iwo Jima and Robert De Niro's second film as director, The Good Shepherd, in which he also stars, can not be considered, as both have a scheduled February 23 release. The George Clooney-starring The Good German, with a March 9 release date, will also miss out. Adam Dawtrey, of industry magazine Variety, says, "This strikes at the very heart of the question of what commercial impact BAFTA actually has for distributors. On the whole, there's a belief that the awards season overall has a significant commercial impact - not just the Oscars but the hype for months about the race, and clearly BAFTA is a part of that. But if you take the BAFTAs out of that mix, do you not just have the same impact anyway, as far as a British audience is concerned?"...
