Officials at Dish Network and DirecTV are downplaying reports of a possible merger of the two satellite television platforms, according to several sources who spoke with The Desk on background this week.
Over the weekend, financial news outlet Bloomberg published a story that suggested the two companies were holding preliminary discussions about a possible merger — something each company has tried before, with little success.
The current discussions are “in the early stages,” according to Bloomberg, which cited sources who “asked not to be identified because the information is private.”
A spokesperson for DirecTV said the company doesn’t “comment on rumors and speculation,” adding that reports about “potential transactions involving DirecTV and Dish are nothing new.”
The last time such a rumor was reported, it was 2019, and Bloomberg was the news outlet to break the story, with the...

A New York state appeals court says Nexstar Media Group wrongly collected more than $10 million in fees from DirecTV for the carriage of a specific television station that had lost its NBC affiliation.
This week, the appeals court said Nexstar concealed the fact that the station, Wdvm, was set to convert from an NBC affiliate into a full-time independent station around 2016 and instead negotiated a new carriage agreement with the satellite broadcaster on the premise that Wdvm would continue to carry NBC programming.
In doing so, Nexstar charged DirecTV fees that would have been owed if Wdvm had maintained its NBC affiliation long-term. DirecTV sued on the matter, saying it overpaid Nexstar carriage fees and asking the broadcaster to return the difference.
In court, both sides affirmed that DirecTV at the time did not typically pay carriage fees...

A federal judge has tossed an antitrust lawsuit brought by DirecTV against Nexstar Media Group that alleged collusion and price fixing concerning some of the satellite company’s local TV carriage agreements.
The lawsuit, filed last March, claimed Nexstar worked with two affiliated companies — Mission Broadcasting and White Knight Broadcasting — to engage in an unlawful conspiracy to raise prices for certain local broadcast channels.
Those stations — around 60 in total — are operated by Nexstar through shared services agreements with Mission and White Knight, which holds the broadcast licenses to those outlets. Those agreements allow a large company like Nexstar to operate stations without exceeding a federal cap that limits direct ownership to stations that reach less than approximately 40 percent of the American television audience.
At the time the lawsuit was filed, Mission and White Knight stations were unavailable to DirecTV subscribers.
