Our daily visit to Marvel's Defenders nears its end with episode 7. Fingers crossed for a big finish!
The long-awaited Marvel-Netflix show has finally dropped, and once again we’re doing daily write ups of every episode, highlighting the influences, in-jokes, reference points and Easter eggs we spotted, as well as a few thoughts on the show itself.
See related Marc Webb interview: The Amazing Spider-Man, villains, casting, sequels and more
As usual feel free to discuss whether you’re watching along or you’ve seen it all, but please don’t spoil future episodes for anyone in the comments.
Following the events of last episode, the Defenders (as they are plainly never going to refer to themselves) are waylaid in Misty Knight’s police station-turned-halfway house with a lot of questions to answer, not least the presence of the deceased corpse of Stick, for whom they are the primary murder suspects.

‘The Defenders’: You May Have Missed the Introduction of Marvel’s Next Armed-and-Dangerous Superhero
[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers from the final episode of “Marvel’s The Defenders” and various storylines from Marvel Comics.]
“The Defenders” already has its fair share of superheroes, but apparently there’s always room for one more.
In the finale showdown between Colleen Wing (Jessica Henpeck) and her former sensei Bakuto (Ramon Rodriguez), one of the leaders of the ninja organization The Hand, Misty Knight (Simone Missick) tried to help and got her right arm sliced off for her efforts.
Fans had wondered if the Marvel Netflix series would go through with such a brutal amputation, but “Luke Cage” showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker, who is a big fan of the comics, foreshadowed Misty’s loss when she got shot in the arm in Season 1.
Read More:‘The Defenders’: Why That Ending Represented the Worst Kind of Superhero Cliche
In the comic books, Misty had already lost her arm after tangling with a bomb. Naturally, this impacted her police work and her state of mind, but that depression didn’t last for long.

One of the best things to come with the proliferation of superhero storytelling, across both film and television, is the growing complexity around the concept of heroism. And thus one of the best things about “Marvel’s The Defenders” is that it’s actively engaged with this, while still managing to deliver ninja fights, comic book in-jokes, Jessica Jones day-drinking, and more fun.
“The Defenders” unites the previous four Marvel/Netflix series — “Daredevil,” “Jessica Jones,” “Luke Cage,” and “Iron Fist” — for an adventure that spans not just New York, but the mystical realms. All four of the heroes from these previously established shows find themselves facing a New York in chaos thanks to the actions of the evil, ninja-esque organization The Hand (led by the mysterious Alexandra, played by legend Sigourney Weaver); after being drawn together by their individual investigations, they’re forced to acknowledge that the battle can only be won together.

Put your dollar bills away, ladies. Turns out that Jon Gosselin was less Channing Tatum in Magic Mike and more Christina Aguilera in Burlesque.
The former Jon & Kate Plus 8 star put on a big show for his 40th birthday Saturday night after confirming his appearance as a male entertainer with Men Untamed at the Atlantic City, New Jersey hotspot. However, he did not actually strip.
Exclusive: Jon Gosselin Confirms He's Performing as a Stripper in New Jersey, Calls It 'a Blessing'
Gosselin's performance was far more tame than anticipated, as he instead showed off his dance moves rather than his bare assets. While fully clothed, he strutted his stuff to Justin Timberlake's "Sexy Back," Ginuwine's "Pony" and Right Said Fred's "I'm Too Sexy." The former TLC reality star also did take off his shirt, only to reveal a tank top underneath adorned with a picture of a six-pack, according to E! News...

An Sov offering from Chemical Burn Entertainment, Junkfood Horrorfest (2007) is a no-budget anthology directed by Brian Crow. Written by Brian Crow and Walter Reuther (Scarlet Fry), the movie opens with a female junkie looking for a fix but instead getting a video cassette from her dealer. In a fit of rage, the junkie goes back to the dealer with a crowbar and beats him to death. The blood-soaked junkie then finds a friend and asks if he wants to watch a movie. The dealer is unforgettable but the junkie is played by Calico Cooper, daughter of shock rocker Alice Cooper. This intro leads the viewer into six horror shorts tied together by quick vignettes involving Scarlet Fry as a redneck cannibal complete with a mask made of skin (a la Ed Gein) and a female victim tied to a tree in the background, awaiting her fate.

"An overzealous application of CGI is the figurative boa constrictor squeezing the life out of The Sorcerer and the White Snake, a silly, derivative supernatural-action extravaganza that would have been better at a fraction of its f/x budget," argues Justin Chang in Variety. "Overblown saga of shape-shifting demons, butt-kicking clerics and the perils of interspecies romance occasionally dazzles but finally frazzles with its relentless visual assault, embedding Jet Li and his capable castmates in one screensaver-ready fantasy backdrop after another."
"The story of a woman demon who falls in love with a mortal will ring bells for Westerners as a charming variant on Hans Christian Andersen's Little Mermaid tale," suggests Deborah Young in the Hollywood Reporter, "though here the scaly mermaid is a huge, beautiful snake. With non-stop action to attract the lads, the tale is laced with enough overblown romanticism for ten chick flicks, yet chaste enough for children.

Leaves of Grass, like its characters, is manic. It’s tonally insane, but that’s not a slant. The insanity at hand plays perfectly into the situation and its leads. This is a dark comedy told with an old sensibility. This is a modern day religious fable. It features the tropes and themes of classical storytelling: betrayal, brotherhood, power and love.
Many have been lamenting the tone as jarring. It absolutely is, but in the best and most suitable way possible. When the situation and humor shift it goes into an unexpected and joyous territory. When a nice comedic moment can lead to two heads being blown off instantaneously, it keeps you on your feet. The feel of unevenness is, obviously, intentional. One will either fully embrace the chances director Tim Blake Nelson takes or won’t.
