Ron Nyswaner will soon be traveling to New York to reunite with his Writers Guild of America East fellows for a grand occasion. The Oscar-nominated screenwriter, producer and showrunner has been selected to receive the Walter Bernstein Award at the 76th Writers Guild Awards at New York’s Edison Ballroom on April 14.
The honor — named after the late screenwriter who was blacklisted for his political views only to persevere and get his career back on track with such credits as Fail-Safe, Semi-Tough and Yanks — is presented to writers “who have demonstrated with creativity, grace and bravery a willingness to confront social injustice in the face of adversity,” per the organization.
Nyswaner has been doing that for pretty much his entire career. A prime example is Jonathan Demme’s 1993 film Philadelphia. Penned by Nyswaner, the Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington-starrer was the first major Hollywood film to dramatize the real-world...

“Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light,” formats “Upside Down” and “Shaolin Heroes” and premium doc feature “Front Row,” offering a novel take on the Ukraine War, are potential highlights on Banijay’s powerhouse lineup at what promises to be one of the biggest presentations at next week’s London TV Screenings.
Mixing third-party pick-ups and Banijay productions, further scripted titles take in second seasons of two Banijay hits, the sumptuous and revisionist “Marie Antoinette,” and “Rogue Heroes,” a big WWII special ops adventure story which hit high ratings on BBC.
Unspooling over Wednesday Feb. 28 at BAFTA in three sessions, dedicated to factual, scripted and then formats, the Banijay@BAFTA lineup, as last year, the spread will give audiences a chance to catch up with high-concept adventure reality “The Summit” and “Deal or No Deal Island,” described as an “epic” recast of the format.

A half-century rock mystery has finally been solved as researchers have discovered the identity of the man on the cover of Led Zeppelin’s IV.

That photo was then colorized, framed, and placed on the wall of a dilapidated home to create the image that adorns what’s now considered one of the greatest and best-selling albums in rock history.

Led Zeppelin IV is no doubt one of the greatest rock albums of all time. But what has been in doubt since Led Zeppelin released the LP exactly 52 years ago today has been the identity of the man on the cover — until now.
As reported by The Guardian, new research has identified the bearded man with a walking stick and a bundle of twigs on his back as a Victorian-era Wiltshire thatcher named Lot Long (also known as Lot Longyear). The discovery was made by Brian Edwards, a visiting research fellow at the University of the West of England.
Edwards stumbled upon the original black & white photo while researching an exhibition he curated with Wiltshire Museum in 2021.
“Led Zeppelin created the soundtrack that has accompanied me since my teenage years, so I really hope the discovery of this Victorian photograph pleases and entertains Robert [Plant], Jimmy [Page] and John Paul [Jones],” Edwards said.

Sometimes, a new vicar arrives in a village and it's all sweet weirdoes and running jokes, like in The Vicar Of Dibley. But when Samantha Morton_ vibes. And we have an exclusive look at the trailer…
Adapted from Cj Tudor's novel, the show sees Morton’s Reverend Jack Brooks and her daughter Flo arriving in the village seeking a fresh start.

Getting caught up in a deadly kidnapping, being torn away from your loved ones and forced into witness protection, tracking down a serial killer of vulnerable young girls… none of the above exactly scream ‘Lol’, and yet they’ve all become the subject of British crime comedy-dramas in recent years. The “you’ve got to laugh” mentality is clearly in our national DNA, no matter how bleak the circumstances.
Attracting huge names in comedy, from Matt Berry, Stephen Merchant, James Corden and Joanna Scanlan, to the brilliant Gbemisola Ikumelo, Emer Kenny, Kerry Howard, and created by the writers behind People Just Do Nothing, Peep Show, Succession and more, here are some of the best darkly funny crime comedy series of recent years.

Scream VI was named best movie on Sunday night at the 2023 MTV Movie & TV Awards, which pivoted at the last minute from live to pretaped due to the writers strike,
The film also won best fight for Courteney Cox (as Gale Weathers) and the killer Ghostface, the latter of whom accepted both awards via pretaped video.
Accepting best movie, Ghostface quipped that there is finally an answer to the question, “What is your favorite scary movie?” — a reference to a classic line of dialogue from the franchise.
The Last of Us also was a big winner, taking three awards, including best show. Star Pedro Pascal was named best hero, while he and Bella Ramsey also were named best duo. Stranger Things won two awards.
The show was held amid the ongoing writers strike, which led host Drew Barrymore to drop out in a show of support for the striking scribes.

While the 2023 MTV Movie & TV Awards weren't held live on May 7, some of Hollywood's biggest stars still got their moment during the prerecorded show. In the lead-up to Sunday, the ceremony planned for Barker Hangar in Los Angeles was scrapped amid the Writers Guild of America strike. Host Drew Barrymore stepped back from the gig in support of the striking writers, and the decision to do without a red carpet closely followed. Heading into the weekend, it was confirmed that the event would not be held in its original form.
Still, big names accepted their popcorn trophies through video clips, including Tom Cruise, who was piloting a plane while expressing his gratitude for his win for best performance in a movie for "Top Gun: Maverick."

He also won the honorary MTV Generation Award in 2005. But these are his first nominations in any category since “Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol” 11 years ago.

As 2022 wraps up, the end of the year presents an opportunity to look back on how LGBTQ representation fared on the big screen. According to GLAAD’s 10th Annual Studio Responsibility Index, the percentage of LGBTQ-inclusive films (as well as racial diversity and screen time for queer characters) dipped in 2021.
While this year’s official report has yet to be released, it appears to have recovered some ground. From theaters to streamers, it’s been an impressive year for LGBTQ flicks, from joyful summer rom-coms “Bros” and “Fire Island” to sobering dramas like “My Policeman” and “The Inspection.” That includes some of the most talked-about titles of awards season – “The Whale,” “Tár”, and “Everything Everywhere All At Once,” to name a few.

Toronto International Film Festival Announces 2022 TIFF Tribute Award for Performance
The cast of Michael Grandage’s My Policeman — Harry Styles, Emma Corrin, Gina McKee, Linus Roache, David Dawson, and Rupert Everett — are the first-ever film ensemble to receive this honour
Cameron Bailey, CEO of TIFF, has announced that the ensemble cast of My Policeman — Harry Styles, Emma Corrin, Gina McKee, Linus Roache, David Dawson, and Rupert Everett — will be honoured with the TIFF Tribute Award for Performance.
Now in its fourth year, the TIFF Tribute Awards presented by Bvlgari will return to an in-person gala fundraiser during the 47th edition of the Toronto International Film Festival on Sunday, September 11, at Fairmont Royal York Hotel. As previously announced, My Policeman by director Michael Grandage will have its World Premiere at this year’s Festival.
The TIFF Tribute Award for Performance is presented by Polestar.
“When your film shifts through time and across fluid boundaries of love and desire, you need a cast that can embody those nuances in every gesture,” said Bailey. “Harry Styles, Emma Corrin, and David Dawson deliver beautiful, mirrored performances with Linus Roache, Gina McKee, and Rupert Everett. We’re thrilled to honour the ensemble cast of My Policeman with the TIFF Tribute Award for Performance.”
Adapted for the screen by Oscar-nominated screenwriter Ron Nyswaner from Bethan Roberts’ award-winning novel of the same name, Prime Video’s My Policeman follows three young people — policeman Tom (Styles), teacher Marion (Corrin), and museum curator Patrick (Dawson) — as they embark on an emotional journey in 1950s Britain. Flashing forward to the 1990s, Tom (Roache), Marion (McKee), and Patrick (Everett) are still reeling with longing and regret, but now they have one last chance to repair the damage of the past. Grandage carves a visually transporting, heart-stopping portrait of three people caught up in the shifting tides of history, liberty, and forgiveness.
For the first time ever, the TIFF Tribute Award for Performance will be celebrating an ensemble cast in the now gender-neutral acting category. This is the first of two performance awards to be announced. Past recipients honoured in the prestigious acting category were Jessica Chastain and Benedict Cumberbatch in 2021; Kate Winslet and Sir Anthony Hopkins in 2020; and Meryl Streep and Joaquin Phoenix in 2019.
The TIFF Tribute Awards have served as an awards-season bellwether, with past honourees Jessica Chastain, Roger Deakins, Sir Anthony Hopkins, Joaquin Phoenix, Taika Waititi, and Chloé Zhao going on to win awards on the international stage. The TIFF Tribute Awards honour the film industry’s outstanding contributors and their achievements, recognizing leading industry members, acting talent, directorial expertise, new talent, and a below-the-line artist and creator. The Awards event also serves as TIFF’s largest annual fundraiser to support TIFF’s Every Story fund, which promotes diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging in film and TIFF’s core mission to transform the way people see the world through film. More information on the 2022 TIFF Tribute Awards event and this year’s honourees will follow in the coming weeks.

In the late 1990s, the arrival of Patrick, an elderly and disabled man, at Marion and Tom’s home triggers an exploration of seismic events from 40 years earlier: the passionate relationship between Tom and Patrick at a time when homosexuality was illegal.
My Policeman (2022) Movie Review
An elegant movie and, above all, a spectacular vintage reconstruction that knows how to capture the feeling of the time and the environment with all its coldness, and this is precisely why it has not gone down too well.

For Academy and BAFTA Award-nominated production designer Maria Djurkovic, the best part of any film is discovering its visual language — its look, mood, atmosphere, color palette and sensibility. But what is important to her is that this language arises from the material itself. That was certainly the case with her latest effort, “My Policeman,” whose script she was sent during the first Covid-19 lockdown and whose attitude immediately leapt off the page.
“For me, that initial response about mood and atmosphere is absolutely crucial, [it] doesn’t matter what the project is… One of the ways that I know if I should be doing a particular film or not is whether I do see pictures immediately,” reveals Djurkovic during her recent webchat with Gold Derby (watch the exclusive video interview above). “I absolutely did [with ‘My Policeman’] — it had a very strong atmosphere and a very evocative mood.”

Everybody seems to love Harry Styles. The 28-year-old British heartthrob ,who initially scored huge success as a member of the boy band One Direction before going solo six years ago, won a Grammy last year for best pop solo performance for “Watermelon Sugar.” And he’s up for a total of six this year for his hit single “As It Was” and album “Harry’s House.” And it’s hard not to miss footage of his energetic concerts filled with screaming women of all ages on TikTok.
Though there were two One Direction concert films, Styles has shied away from rock and rolling on the silver screen rather appearing as a World War II soldier in Christopher Nolan’s acclaimed 2017 “Dunkirk” and starring in two high-profile films this fall: Olivia Wilde’s “Stepford Wives”-style thriller “Don’t Worry Darling” and the romantic drama “My Policeman.” In the later, he gives...

Michelle Dockery, best know for playing Lady Mary Crawley on the hit period drama Downton Abbey, has landed the lead role in This Town, an upcoming BBC drama from Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight. According to Deadline, the six-part series (formerly known as Two Tone) revolves around an extended family and four young people who are drawn into the world of ska and two-tone music. A popular form of music in the U.K. in the late 1970s and early 1980s that fused traditional Jamaican ska with punk rock and new wave, it brought together Black, white, and Asian youths. There are no details as of yet on the character Dockery will be playing in the series, which is currently filming in Birmingham, England. In addition to Dockery, the cast also includes Nicholas Pinnock (Marcella) and David Dawson (My Policeman). “This is a project very close to my heart,” said...

Downton Abbey star Michelle Dockery is to lead Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight’s personal drama This Town for the BBC.
Knight’s six-parter is rolling the cameras in Birmingham and has cast a string of other British actors including Nicholas Pinnock (Marcella) and David Dawson (My Policeman).
Previously called Two Tone, the show tells the story of an extended family and four young people who are drawn into the world of ska and two-tone music, which exploded from the grass roots of Coventry and Birmingham in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s, uniting black, white and Asian youths.
Universal Music Group’s Mercury Studios is co-producer and will “bring in an exciting range of high profile musical artists to help lay the backdrop for Knight’s incredible story,” according to the BBC. Mercury is co-producing alongside Banijay-backed Kudos and Nebulastar in association with Kudos North, Stigma Films and Nick Angel.

You could say that working on “My Policeman” would be any costume designer’s dream. The movie, which had a limited theatrical release in the U.S. on October 21 before debuting on Amazon Prime Video on November 4, is a romantic period drama that takes place across two timelines in 20th-century Britain and features everything from a well-attended opera performance to an excursion to sun-drenched Venice. But what primarily attracted Annie Symons to the project was actually the profoundness of the story.
“I couldn’t stop crying,” reveals the film’s Emmy and BAFTA Award-winning costume designer about her visceral reaction to reading the script for the first time in her recent webchat with Gold Derby (watch our exclusive video interview above). “I thought it was so powerful and so personal. I thought… this story will be personal to just about everybody watching it for some reason or another. And I...

Photo: 'My Policeman' A Strong And Complementary Ensemble This film shows us an unhappily married couple as we flashback to how they met during a time when they were younger and the husband had a same-sex affair with a museum curator. The ensemble that played the young and older versions of the main characters complemented each other well and captured the general nature of each character throughout each one's life. Harry Styles’ performance was his best since his role in Christopher Nolan’s ‘Dunkirk’. He gave a performance of palpable self-conflict and romantic passion, complemented by David Dawson as his love interest. Patrick (David Dawson) exudes a tempered presence and lonely demeanor before he meets Tom (Harry Styles) and a passionate affair ensues that is intimate and compelling. This review originally ran on September 11, 2022, for the film’s world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.
A love triangle plays out over decades in Michael Grandage’s “My Policeman,” based on the 2012 novel by Bethan Roberts, who was inspired by the 40-year relationship between English novelist E.M. Forster and policeman Bob Buckingham, as well Buckingham’s wife, May, who also became close with Forster. As described by Roberts in a 2012 essay in The Guardian, this quiet, proto-polyamorous situation was “a wonderful muddle,” which seemingly worked for all three participants in their own way.
The relationship at the center of “My Policeman,” isn’t so much wonderful as it is tragic. Instead of finding a happily unconventional comfort as Forster and the Buckinghams may have, the three individuals in “My Policeman” end up jealous, unsatisfied and oppressed, and the film explores the ways in which one might attempt to right decades of wrongs.

Harry Styles’ Nov. 4 concert at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles has been postponed to Sunday, Nov. 6, due to “band illness.”
The venue announced the date change on Instagram, citing “an abundance of caution.” All previously purchased tickets will be honored for the rescheduled date, and no other dates on Styles’ “Love on Tour” will be affected. Veteran multi-instrumentalist blues rocker Ben Harper is still set to open the show.
The Nov. 4 date lands in the middle of a 15-night run in L.A. Previously, Styles headlined 15 sold-out nights at New York’s Madison Square Garden, an unprecedented feat, as well as six nights in both Chicago and Austin.

To belt or not to belt?
That was the question bedeviling Annie Symons, the costume designer of Amazon’s “My Policeman,” when it came to outfitting Harry Styles. In the film, streaming Nov. 4, the pop star plays Tom, a gay constable forced into a loveless marriage in 1950s Brighton. And, you see, it turns out that police officers at the time didn’t wear belts, which was a little bit of a problem for Symons.
“I needed Tom to look young, svelte and handsome and prior to introducing a belt, policemen looked a bit like navy blue tree trunks,” says Symons. “I had raging arguments with the so-called experts, but ultimately I decided to leave all the academics shaking their heads and the belt went on.”
Symons used wool twill from a military fabric supplier to manufacture the uniform. She also brightened the color of the outfit, deviating from what...

My Policeman is a stirring drama featuring a fine ensemble, which contains a little known artist called Harry Styles. To mark the film’s Prime Video launch we had the pleasure in speaking to several of the talented creatives that have brought this profound tale to screen, chatting to Emma Corrin & David Dawson, as well as co-star Gina McKee, and finally filmmaker Michael Grandage.
We speak about the themes in the movie, and given the narrative unfolds across two timelines, in the past and present, we ask whether Corrin and Dawson tried to connect their performances to the actors playing them later in life and naturally as asked McKee the very same question, just the other way around. We also, naturally, discussed the collaboration process with Styles, and what sort of actor he is and his process and diligence on set – while Grandage explains why having a name of that...
