True crime is getting more and more entertaining by the day and I don’t if that’s a good thing or a bad one. We have another brilliant true crime drama series, Under the Bridge, created by Quinn Shephard. Based on a 2005 book of the same name by Rebecca Godfrey, the Hulu series is set in 1997 and it follows the murder case of a 14-year-old girl which we see through the eyes of local police officer Cam Bentland and the author Godfrey. Under the Bridge stars Lily Gladstone and Riley Keough in the lead roles with Virtika Gupta, Chloe Guidry, Javon “Wanna” Walton, and Izzy G starring in supporting roles. So, if you love the thrilling and dreadful story of Under the Bridge, here are some other shows that have similar tone and story elements that you should check out next.

[Editor's Note: This post contains spoilers for Cruel Summer Season 2.]
Multiple timelines have become unavoidable on TV, but few shows put their time-hopping structure to use quite like the first season of Cruel Summer. Set across three years — 1993, 1994, and 1995 — the Freeform drama followed the interconnected journeys of Jeanette Turner (Chiara Aurelia) and Kate Wallis (Olivia Holt) as it worked to answer one burning question: Did Jeanette know Kate was kidnapped by assistant principal Martin Harris (Blake Lee) and imprisoned in his basement?...

The creator of Cruel Summer is stepping away.
Per Deadline, Bert V. Royal is no longer involved in the young-skewing drama.
Royal is said to have left after the pilot amid disagreements with a Freeform exec.
No details have been revealed beyond that, but it's unclear whether the disagreements were about the show's creative vision.
In the entertainment industry, creative differences are not uncommon.
Cruel Summer is a psychological thriller that follows two young women: Kate Wallis, the popular girl with a charmed life who one day goes missing, and Jeanette Turner, the nerdy wannabe who is accused of being connected to Kate's disappearance.
All signs point to Jeanette's guilt, but is Kate really who she seems to be?
Set over three summers and told through shifting points of view, the series challenges perception and follows how one girl can go from being a sweet outlier to the most despised person in America.

The “easy” decision comes ahead of the season one finale, tonight, Tuesday June 15.

Freeform's latest thriller, Cruel Summer, is reminiscent of predecessors such as Pretty Little Liars with flashbacks, twists and turns, unsuspecting victims, and criminals - but is it purely fictional? The series takes place in a small, fictional Texas town over the course of three summers and centers on the disappearance of beautiful, popular teenager Kate and how unpopular girl Jeanette seemingly takes her place while she's missing. While Cruel Summer isn't based on a true story, there have been nods to some very famous true-crime cases. If you've been paying close attention, you might've picked up on a few.
In episode two, during a '95 scene, Kate is talking to her dad in their kitchen and she is eating pineapple chunks in milk. This is a reference to the JonBenét Ramsey case from the late '90s; true-crime aficionados will have picked up on that immediately, as it is...

Cruel Summer, the latest offering from actress-turned-producer Jessica Biel, is taking Freeform by storm! The Hollywood Reporter reports that the premiere of the ‘90s-set psychological thriller ranks as the network’s “most watched series debut ever.” With a fluid timeline and narrative, killer retro soundtrack and gripping central mystery, it is no surprise audiences are flocking to watch.
The engrossing story begins on June 21, 1993, the 15th birthday of self-proclaimed “nerdy” high schooler Jeanette Turner (Chiara Aurelia). As the dynamic timeline flips and flops between 1993, 1994 and 1995, we see Jeanette transform — first into the most popular girl in town after the former queen bee, Kate Wallis (Olivia Holt), goes missing and Jeanette seemingly and seamlessly takes her place, and then into the most hated woman in the world upon Kate’s return almost a year later when it is revealed that Jeanette knew of her whereabouts but told no one.

Freeform has found its next hit in Cruel Summer.
The thrilling mystery drama has emerged as the network's best-ever series debut among young adults, drawing an average audience of 3.81 million multiplatform viewers in the first week available.
The Jessica Biel produced drama is likewise the network's best-ever series debut among Adults 18-49 (2.65 million) and Adults 18-34 (1.33 million).
Freeform has also pegged the series as the No. 1 most social scripted series premiere across cable year-to-date.
The ratings are a great indication of how the series is truly performing. The series premiere managed around 250,000 viewers and a 0.1 rating in its linear debut on the cabler.
The numbers mean that around 6% of the total audience for the premiere watched on premiere night, with the rest catching up on-demand and DVR.
Is this the shape of things to come?
Probably.
More than ever, people are watching TV on their own terms, and these delayed numbers are impressive.

Freeform’s premiere of its new teen thriller series “Cruel Summer” on Thursday was not like any other Hollywood has experienced during the pandemic. Instead of a virtual or drive-in screening, the network booked 80 rooms at the Beverly Hilton for a balcony screening. Each guest was assigned to their own room in order to watch the screening from a terrace overlooking an inflatable jumbo screen. “This is special,” producer Michelle Purple told Variety. “I’ve seen friends have drive-in premieres, but Freeform got creative.”
Each room was decked out with ’90s nostalgia – including “Friends” posters, concert fliers for Garbage and The Cranberries, vintage Seventeen magazines, scrunchies, inflatable furniture and candy – to match the show’s mid-90s setting.

“Cruel Summer” has set up an intriguing challenge for itself. Each episode of the new Freeform drama series depicts a single day over the course of three years — 1993, 1994 and 1995 — in order to convey the long-tail effects of a kidnapping. It’s both an attention-getting gambit and a limitation: Condensing a story that takes place over two years into three days of action, and finding ways to communicate what happened between the days we see without resorting to pure data-dumps.
While it’s sometimes slightly inelegant, “Cruel Summer” generally manages to pull off that challenge in its first two episodes. That sets the series off to a promising start in part because of the limits producers have imposed on their own storytelling.
In the first episode, directed by Max Winkler with an admirable ability to veer between a trio of distinct tones, we see three versions of June 21 from the perspective...

Freeform has released a first look at the upcoming series, Cruel Summer, which is set to debut on April 20.
It takes place over three years in 90s and follows two young women: Kate Wallis, the popular girl with a charmed life who one day goes missing, and Jeanette Turner, the nerdy wannabe who is accused of being connected to Kate’s disappearance. All signs point to Jeanette’s guilt, but is Kate really who she seems to be? Set over three summers and told through shifting points of view, the series challenges perception and follows how one girl can go from being a sweet outlier to the most despised person in America.
Jessica Biel serves as an executive producer on the show. “This is a project that I would have wanted to do if I was their age,” said Biel during today’s TCA presentation. “I would have loved to play one of these characters.
