Joe Biden’s reelection campaign is turning to the research producer for Apple TV+’s The Problem with Jon Stewart and Netflix’s Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj as research producer.
Andy Crystal will combine traditional campaign research with a greater emphasis on viral videos, investigative reporting and other tactics that will break through in the media, according to campaign officials.
In a statement, Jim Margolis, executive producer and showrunner of Patriot Act, said, “Andy’s vision, vast intellect and passion for finding and reporting important stories drove our most memorable episodes. He has an uncommon ability to quickly process huge amounts of information, to make complex stories understandable and to put a human face on issues that matter. Can experience generating viral moments on late night TV translate to a political campaign? The Biden-Harris reelection effort is betting that it can.
President Biden’s 2024 campaign operation has hired late night TV veteran Andy Crystal as its research director, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
Crystal was most recently lead research producer on the Apple TV+ series The Problem with Jon Stewart, and before that worked as a senior news producer on the Netflix series Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj.
Crystal is expected to combine the traditional campaign research approach with creative tactics like viral videos and investigative reporting meant to cut through the clutter of social platforms, per campaign officials.
It’s a skillset that Jim Margolis, the executive producer and showrunner of Patriot Act, believes will translate well.

Hasan Minhaj has an unusually hard task ahead of him with his new political comedy series “Patriot Act.” For one, thanks to the extreme proliferation of cable and streaming networks. there’s no shortage of similar shows out there, standing by for whatever fresh material/hell that week’s news might offer. For another, Netflix has a notoriously rocky history of launching “late night” comedy shows. Over the past year, Chelsea Handler, Joel McHale, and Michelle Wolf have all seen their timely, weekly efforts die on the Netflix vine without getting enough network support and/or viewers to grow. What’s to say that Minhaj, demonstrably talented though he is, can beat these odds?
“Patriot Act,” which dropped two episodes on October 28, doesn’t run away from political comedy convention while also aiming for something just different enough to make it stand apart. Taking cues from his own stellar Netflix standup special “Homecoming King,...

“Patriot Act” is a very good title for Hasan Minhaj’s upcoming weekly Netflix talk show. Just in case anyone is confused by what that show actually is, the “Daily Show” alum has brought along some help to explain the new format.
Minhaj doesn’t have any dialogue, but the teaser shows a trio of Nsa-adjacent surveillance officials tracking Minhaj’s whereabouts and communications. It’s a sly way of playing off the show’s title and coming up with an excuse for a direct overview of what this upcoming show is. “It explores the modern geopolitical and cultural landscape through a comedic lens,” one of them says.
When “Patriot Act” was announced, Minhaj was set to join a growing list of comedians who were able to respond to the day’s and week’s news in their respective shows. Now, it will debut as the service’s only active weekly talk show,...

The 2018 Writers Guild of America Awards take place on Feb. 11 with simultaneous ceremonies held in both New York and Los Angeles. Only scripts written under the guild’s guidelines or those of several international partners are allowed to vie for these awards. As such, these kudos are not the most reliable barometer of the Oscars.

Modern Family, Downton Abbey, and the other winners of the 2011 Primetime Emmy Awards have been announced. The 63rd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards “often referred to simply as the Emmy, is a television production award, similar in nature to the Peabody Awards but more focused on entertainment, and is considered the television equivalent to the Academy Awards (for film), Grammy Awards (for music) and Tony Awards (for stage).” The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences awarded the 2010-2011 Primetime Emmys® for programs and individual achievements last night in Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles, California. I was happy to see Peter Dinklage win for his work in Game of Thrones. He deserved it. The full listing of the 2011 Primetime Emmy Awards winners is below.
