When Ncuti Gatwa makes his first appearance as the 15th Doctor in the science-fiction series “Doctor Who,” he isn’t wearing any pants.
In a 60th-anniversary special released in December, the previous Doctor — played by series icon David Tennant — subverts the show’s long-standing practice of regeneration: Instead of simply transforming into the next Doctor, he literally splits in half, bringing Gatwa’s Doctor into the world alongside him. In the process, the two divide the clothes of Tennant’s Doctor between them, leaving Gatwa in nothing but a dress shirt and a pair of tighty-whities.
“Oh, my God, that first costume fitting!” Gatwa says, bursting into an infectious fit of laughter. It’s a frequent occurrence as he speaks with Variety on a chilly March day over lemon ginger tea at the Langham hotel in London. “I was like, ‘Are you joking?!’ They showed me a pair of [underwear] and...

Rawandan-British actor Ncuti Gatwa is on the rise with roles in “Sex Education,” “Barbie,” and currently, as the lead of “Doctor Who,” the wildly popular BBC sci-fi comedy series that first aired in 1963.
Gatwa’s casting in “Doctor Who” saw the actor face an extreme level of racist backlash, reminding us all over again of the sexism that fellow “Doctor Who” alumni Jodie Whittaker experienced when she was hired to play the Doctor in 2017 (the role has mostly been portrayed by white men so far).

No one’s ever really gone when it comes to a timey wimey show like Doctor Who, including past showrunner Steven Moffat, who is back penning a new episode of series 14. We still know very little about his new story except that it’ll be the third episode of the series, will feature Hitchcock-style suspense, and is the second episode directed by Julie Anne Robinson after the series 14 premiere.
And now add a new detail: the episode’s title, which is simply “Boom.” Sounds explosive, indeed.

Jodie Whittaker has gone from playing a Time Lord to doing Time. The former Doctor Who star joins The Last of Us’ Bella Ramsey and The Long Song’s Tamara Lawrance for Season 2 of the British prison drama, now set in a women’s correctional facility in Northern England. Whittaker’s character, Orla, is a single, working-class mother of three, struggling financially, whose world crumbles when she’s sentenced to six months behind bars. Her crime: “fiddling the leccy,” slang for tinkering with the electricity meter to lower her bill. That nonviolent offense lands Orla in the middle of an unfathomable world—confinement with prisoners like Kelsey (Ramsey), a heroin addict, and Abi (Lawrance), a convicted killer—and plunges her even further into an abyss as she tries to hold her family together, with only her alcoholic mother to depend on. Still, it wasn’t hard for Whittaker to connect to Orla,...

One of this year’s buzziest titles has to be That Christmas, which we reported was in the works back in 2022. The project has since found a home at Netflix and is expected to land during the festive season this year.
The film will be directed by Simon Otto and the script is penned by Peter Souter and Richard Curtis. That seems logical, considering the film is based on Curtis’ trilogy of children’s books. Curtis is also on board as an executive producer.

‘Camomile Lawn’ Novelist’s Estate Snapped Up By Ilp
International Literary Properties has acquired the estate of British The Camomile Lawn novelist Mary Wesley. Channel 4’s adaptation of The Camomile Lawn is Channel 4’s second most successful drama series of all time, according to Ilp, and the deal will see Ilp manage the rights to Wesley’s work. Having famously published her first novel aged 70, she also wrote the likes of Jumping the Queue, Harnessing Peacocks and The Vacillations of Poppy Carew, all of which have previously been adapted for film and TV. “Mary was an incredible woman, an extraordinary author and a very close member of my family,” said Wesley’s daughter in law, the author Xinran Xue. Deadline revealed last year that Ilp, which holds rights to the literary estates of Langston Hughes and Evelyn Waugh, had headed on a West Coast charm offensive and snapped up the estate of Somerset Maugham.

Doctor Who is one of the most popular sci-fi television shows ever. It centers around The Doctor who travels through time and space. He’s a friend to the helpless, a beacon of hope in the face of the unknown. But beneath the eccentric exterior and witty banter lies a truth rarely acknowledged.
A still from Doctor Who
The Doctor, the beloved protagonist of “Doctor Who”, might just be one of the most prolific killers on television. He is not an average serial killer lurking in the shadows, but a Time Lord, a being with godlike powers and a near-unending lifespan. There have been many incarnations of The Doctor and almost every incarnation has been a reason for many deaths. But the victim count for one particular incarnation is extremely disturbing, to say the least!

Forget all about Anne Hathaway, Jim Sturgess, Rafe Spall and co. That lot are yesterday’s chip paper. The stars of the 2011 One Day film have been superseded by this new bunch, now bringing David Nicholls’ hit 2009 romance novel to life for a new 14-episodes Netflix series. Adapted by Wild Rose and Three Girls screenwriter Nicole Taylor, One Day is a bittersweet love story set across two decades. Matt Smith’s star turn as Prince Phillip in the first two seasons of The Crown attracted plaudits but didn’t exactly secure him as a long-term viewer.
The House of the Dragon star said he “keeps an eye” on the twists and turns of Peter Morgan’s now-ended royal family saga but “doesn’t really watch” The Crown.
“I have not kept up to date with it but I’m proud to be part of it,” he told the BBC’s Today program, as he labeled Morgan a “brilliant writer.”
Smith played Queen Elizabeth II’s husband in the first two seasons from 2016 opposite Claire Foy, before he was replaced by Tobias Menzies for Seasons 3 and 4 and then Jonathan Pryce for the concluding runs.

We’ve had a marvellous run of Taskmaster series lately, so when a new line-up announcement is on the horizon, it’s easy to wonder whether the winning streak will continue or if we’re due a dud.
Never fear – Alex Horne and co. have delivered once again, although the series 17 Taskmaster line-up might not be quite what you’re expecting. Instead of the now-traditional Taskmaster family line-up, this time they’ve gone for a veteran from outside the world of stand-up comedy, plus four rising stars with slightly less mainstream recognition than normal. As ever with this show though, anybody you’re not familiar with at the start, you’ll almost certainly love by the end of the series.

The Doctor we viewers meet as hero of the latest “Doctor Who” Christmas special is unlike any other we’ve met in the 60-year history of the character.
He’s suave in a non-geeky way. He can command a dance floor. He can actually sing. And he’s a Black man.
After watching Ncuti Gatwa’s impressive debut as the first Black, male incarnation of the Time Lord hero at the center of the BBC’s venerated science fiction franchise, this Black male TV critic is fascinated and hopeful at the possibilities that lie ahead.

Taking on the central role in :a[Doctor Who]{href='https://www.empireonline.com/tv/reviews/doctor-who-the-star-beast/' target='_blank' rel='noreferrer noopener'} is one of the most prestigious but expectation-laden jobs in British TV. Not only is the show an absolute institution, now in its 60th year, but stepping into the shoes of the Time Lord who travels through infinite galaxies and endless eras brings with it all kinds of choices and questions: how do you follow in the footsteps of the Doctors who came before you, while bringing your own spin? How do you convey a being who’s experienced as much as the Doctor has? How do you keep that connective tissue with the long-running saga, while standing out in the pantheon of Tardis travellers? With :a[Ncuti Gatwa taking over the keys]{href='https://www.empireonline.com/tv/features/ncuti-gatwa-doctor-who-ushering-in-whole-new-era/' target='_blank' rel...

Christopher Eccleston, who left Doctor Who after one season as The Doctor in 2005, has become much more vocal about his decision to leave the fan-favorite show in the decades since the end of his brief (but beloved) tenure. Speaking to a crowd of Doctor Who fans gathered at the For the Love of Sci-Fi convention in Manchester, England earlier this month, Eccleston was brutally honest about what it would take for him to return as the Doctor: “Sack Russell T Davies, sack Jane Tranter, sack Phil Collinson, sack Julie Gardner, and I’ll come back. Can you arrange that?” All four creatives are of course back at the helm of the show, with Davies once again serving as showrunner and working with Bad Wolf, the production company founded by Gardner and Tranter.

This Doctor Who article contains spoilers.
“When I was young, I was so sure of myself,” the Doctor tells Donna Noble early in the third and final Doctor Who 60th Anniversary Special. “I made a terrible mistake.” That bit of exposition catches up viewers who never got the chance to watch the lost First Doctor serial “The Celestial Toymaker,” in which Michael Gough played the Toymaker, the bad guy of “The Giggle,” now played by Neil Patrick Harris. However, it also captures the theme of the episode, in which the Toymaker’s control over reality and the weight of constant running finally catches up to the Doctor and forces him to admit how little he knows.
From the Covid-era satire of the world destroying itself in pursuit of individual truth to the weariness with which the Doctor tells Noble that he was “so certain” about his past actions, “The...

So, all’s well that ends well.
